24.01.2022 This is the first principle in Funakoshi’s book, The 20 guiding principles of Karate-Do. Rei is a sense of respect and esteem that starts with the self and is t...ransferred to others. Funakoshi states if a martial artist lacks this respectful heart (Rei) then they are only practising contemptible violence. It is for this reason that we must never lose our sense of respect and esteem for ourselves and our training partners. On a much deeper level it is a connection to the oneness, knowing that we are all connected. We are all ‘the one’ or part of the one. We influence our environment and those around us with our energy just like we are influenced by the energy of our environment and those around us. This is why we start with Rei and must maintain it throughout our practise and indeed, beyond the dojo. Yoga practitioners call this Namaste. It is when we honour ourselves and honour others by recognising that thread, that part of us that exists within us all.. whatever you choose to call it. See more

17.01.2022 Final reminder about this exciting seminar happening tomorrow at Hornsby PCYC for all of our junior students 5-19yrs. This is a great opportunity to train with Shihan Anthony Ryan. Shihan Anthony is a 6th Dan black belt and one of Australia's most knowledgeable and inspirational instructors in any style. 17.01.2022 Hello to all instructors and students, Whilst I have been a part of GKR Karate since its earlier days in Sydney (1992), I can’t say that I’ve been an ‘early ado...pter’ when it comes to Facebook or social media engagement in general. Time to join the rest of the world now better late than never! In starting this page, I’d firstly like to thank Kancho Robert Sullivan for entrusting me with the role of Assistant Chief Instructor for GKR Karate. This club has been a major part of my life for well over 25 years now, and I am honoured to be considered worthy of the responsibilities involved. It would be remiss of me also at this point to not recognise the outstanding contribution that Shihan Stacey Karetsian has made to the evolution of the GKR Karate style over the years, and I am committed to continuing our training along the same progressive path that he followed. This page has been set up to allow me to better communicate with GKR students and instructors, and I hope to maintain posting a fairly steady stream of coaching tips and positive material to help move your karate training forward. In kicking this off, it feels appropriate to articulate the values and ethics that are expected of anybody who is part of the GKR Karate community. This applies to students and instructors, and refers to conduct both inside and outside the dojo including online behaviour! Many Martial Arts styles have what’s called a Dojo Kun, which is a simple series of rules that the practitioner is obliged to adhere to as part of his/her acknowledgement of karate-do. With the help of Kancho and a number of our most senior instructors, I have put together a GKR Karate Dojo Kun and posted it here to remind ourselves of the true karate-ka’s ideal code of behaviour. I hope you find it inspiring, and beneficial to your general outlook both in and out of the dojo. Thank you Gavin Samin ** Printable high resolution versions of the Dojo Kun are available below Long Version - http://bit.ly/GKRDojoKunLong Short Version - http://bit.ly/GKRDojoKunShort
