24.01.2022 R9 Latest Timetable - September 2020

23.01.2022 Dear South Australian Students, After a brief closure, we’re excited to announce that. OUR CLASSES ARE RE-OPENING FROM TUESDAY 1ST DECEMBER IN SOUTH AUSTRAL...IA The majority of our venues have granted us immediate access to their halls and classes will commence straight away in these locations. A small number of schools have indicated a delay in re-opening their hall to community hirers, but we will continue corresponding with these venues and let you know as soon as those classes can open. An up-to-date class timetable for your region can be viewed by clicking the below button: https://gkrkarate.com/region-9-timetable/ For those students on a Direct Debit system, please note that your payments were suspended just after the lockdown was announced and their re-activation will be timed so that you will not be charged for any of the class-closure period. As such, your payments will not re-commence until your local/usual GKR Karate dojo has re-opened. If you’re happy to travel a little further to train until your local dojo re-opens, then please email us at the address below and we will arrange to re-activate your training pass. We look forward to seeing you back at class soon! Kind regards, Edde Nio Regional Manager - Senior Instructor P: 0403 507 049 E: [email protected] GKR KARATE

22.01.2022 This video should help understand how to move forward and the 180 degree turn in Taikyoku Kata. e.g. counts 2 and 3. When moving forward, the front foot should not be turned outwards until the finish, and in the turn, the heel of the rear leg must stay on the ground.

22.01.2022 This aid displays the correct postures for Taikyokyu Kata. Colored lines and circles highlight some of the key positionas and angles. Learning these early in training will be the key to make learning and doing higher grade kata easier. Note: the backbone is kept vertical - one step in to get closer to the opponent, not "reaching in" by bending forward.

20.01.2022 Parents and Students. This is a cute training aid for our entry kata (Taikyoku Shodan - pronounced tie-kyoh-k' show-darn). Please take note of the floor plan (foot movements) showing how to move forward - and that in all turns, one pivots on the heel not the toes.

15.01.2022 Superb class Sunday. The power of kicking was a shock to the white belt students. And I think a surprise to the colour belts doing the kicks. Pure physics. Power is proportional to mass and acceleration. Class starts Sunday 10th January - be early I will make it a fun day. But, I will expect 10% of your kata techniques (with postures) to be perfect. Your choice. See you next year. Pat

15.01.2022 URGENT ATTENTION! Due to the large number of students grading on this Sunday, 13th September 2020, we will have to split the grading into 2 sessions. The first ...session (check in at 10.30am) will be as usual from 11.00am - 12.30pm for White belts to Yellow belts only. Second session (check in at 12.30pm) will be from 1.00pm for Yellows belt and above. We will impose a "One parent allow in for each family rule" in order to comply with the current Covid-Safe Plan requirement on social distancing imposed by the State government. I do apologise for this last minute changes as the numbers attending was not expected to be this huge. Thank you for your understanding. See more

14.01.2022 Students were all well focussed this week. 4 will be at grading next week.

08.01.2022 GKR Saifa - Slow version of the sequence in counts 7 and 8, and a worshop showing the hand movements.

05.01.2022 To all GKR students, please find a short video from our founder and Chief Instructor, Kancho Robert Sullivan.

04.01.2022 Karate - Social Distancing? This photo is of a karate training session at the Shuri Castle in Okinawa in 1938. (the caste was destroyed in WW2 and has been rebuilt). Its a bit of an example of how we can keep apart while training. Note that the sensei is on a small platform so would be unable to perform full kata movement. And neither did the students. Similarly in class, we may have to adjust how we do the kata to keep with a small area. Bring your ideas to class, and/or co...mment here. Fortunately for Eliz East dójó we have regularly practised kata in a limited square, and we have created short versions of most of the kyú grade kata so so we should have no trouble in adapting to dynamite techniques in what otherwise would be called "real fighting distance" as opposed to large, wide, embusen (kata performance line) movements. 03.01.2022 Kata Saifa is different!, it seem more like a dance than a fight but its name gives it away Saifa means "Smash and Tear". Unfortunately, it is easy to get con...fused when learning especially when different instructors do not tell you the same thing, because they may not have learnt it properly, or have just gotten a bit sloppy. Its always best to go back to a formal source. Attached is a copy of part of the workshop part of Saifa for count 2. The sequence has a couple of moves. The first is a pull away of the forearm with a twist of the forearm, followed by a head level palm heel block (while stepping away) and then a back fist strike. These are evident in the video. 02.01.2022 On Sunday, students will know I stressed the need for the middle level cross body parry block (Chúdan soto ude-uke) and the lower level cross body sweeping block to extend PAST the body line on the opposite side of the body. This means the upper body must twist, or rotate with the blocking action. The attached training aid shows the various body positions during the block. And the text outlines the main aspects. In reality, these blocks are always best with a stepping away action. But there are times when the block may be done by reflex action - and the upper body rotation is critical for safe and effective action.
