25.01.2022 So good to be back in the dojo again. Great work on your kicks tonight. Remember to do your homework, focussing on the shape of your foot for your different kicks and using a wall to stand next to so that your ushiro geri (back kick) stays straight. Be sure to register for Shihan Anthony’s seminar which you can do via zoom from home. Just $15 per family (see link in the comments on this post for more details). Again I forgot our japanese memory terms this week, sorry. I ...will try to remember next week, but I hope you have been practicing the ones we have already learned. Have a great week and I look forward to seeing you next week. Sensei Rachel

25.01.2022 Congratulations to Yasindi for grading to her 9th kyu (yellow tip). Congratulations also to Jack, Elijah and Nuwindi for grading to their 7th kyu-ho (orange tip). Good luck to Ebony who has been invited to attempt to grade to her 6th kyu (green belt) this Sunday.... You all worked super hard on your grading format tonight and worked well in your partnerships on your kicks. Keep up the great work. We continued with kata work for our extra training and I am really seeing some of you take some big strides with the progress you are making with your kata. Well done! Huge thanks to Senseis Jason, Andrew and Sam who all helped make tonight possible. See you next week! Sensei Rachel

24.01.2022 Congratulations to Breanna and Jahmarley for achieving their 9th kyu (yellow belts) tonight. Congratulations also to Jayden, Matthew and Cooper for grading to their 7th kyu-ho (orange tips). While we are talking about grading, best wishes to the following students who will be attempting their next levels at Subdays grading:... Brendan Tobias Shriyan Ryan Yasindi Joshua Hana Ezekiel Jesse Josiah Also a big welcome to Kristie. She trained hard tonight, fabulous for her first class and I look forward to watching her karate grow. Tonight we started with kata and then worked through our grading format. We continued with this in our extra training and then had another play with cascading kata - videos will be in the comments. Thank you Sensei Andrew for your help this evening. I look forward to seeing you for our last class in 2020 and celebrating Christmas! Wear your favourite Christmas t-shirt. I have ordered some sushi platters and will be bringing other nibblies as well. Please tell me if you have any allergies. I haven’t catered for any drinks however, so make sure you bring plenty of water for yourself or something else if that is your preference (please no alcohol). Bookings are now open! Sensei Rachel

24.01.2022 Congratulations to the fabulous Sensei Andrew who has officially been appointed as the Sempai for our dojo. I am sure you will join me in saying that he is an asset to our class. Tonight we really worked our legs. Anita ran a fantastic warm up for us and then sally brought us to our knees (lunges)! We followed this with some work on really slow kicks (holding onto chairs for balance) to really focus on the shape of our feet, dropping our supporting knee and sucking in ou...r core. For fun, we finished off with some crescent kicks. We then took it to the kick bags to put into practice the kicks we were working on. Some special mentions for fabulous kicks are Harry, Alex, Jack, Anita, Jesse and Hana. Keep up the great work. Keep practicing those kicks at home and remember to keep your guards up throughout your kick. Lastly we cooled down with a really slow 1st kata. For those that stayed for extra training, we played a quick game and then focussed on our grade kata. Congratulations to Ryan and Yasindi who have been invited to the grading on Sunday week to attempt to grade to their yellow belts (8th kyu) Best of luck also to Joshua, Hana, Jesse, Josiah and Ezekiel who were also invited to grade to their yellow belts (8th kyu) in another class We will focus on grading format next week in preparation for the grading on the following Sunday. So practice your kata and basics at home this week and come to class next week with your black belt attitude. If you have already been invited to grade, this is a perfect opportunity to sharpen your skills. Thank you to Andrew, Jason and Sam for your help this evening. Have a great week! Sensei Rachel

23.01.2022 Welcome to Yasindi who joined us for her first class and did a fantastic job! After a fitness warm up we partnered up for kick bag work. You all tried hard. For many of you, this was your first time holding a kick bag which was tricky at first but you quickly got the hang of it. Your ushiro geris, in particular, were looking great. Jack, Alex and Jasmine in particular were excelling on the kick bags.... You then applied yourselves to your grade kata. Keep practicing at home too if you really want to see your kata develop. Of particular mention is Lily in our extra half an hour of training. She developed her saifa in leaps and bounds. Really paying attention to corrections and applying them. I am super impressed. Congratulations also Andrew who joined us for class tonight and has just become one of our regions newest Senseis. We will look at our grading format next week. Sensei Rachel

22.01.2022 Tonight we welcomed Breanna, Wesley, Dominique, Janine, Grace and Edie. They were all fantastic... future black belts in the making. Congratulations to Alex for grading to his orange tip (7th kyu-ho) ... sorry Alex, I forgot to take a photo of you for this post. You all worked hard tonight with some kumite drills and kake uke focus followed by either ju-kumite or tap/tap.... If you are a yellow belt or above and don’t yet have mitts and pads, now is the time to look into acquiring this equipment so you can join in with kumite in the future. For our extra training we focussed on kata and finished with a fun game. Thank you to Senseis Jason and Andrew for your help tonight. Some upcoming key dates: Thursday 26 November - Senseis Jason and Andrew will take the class for this week as I will be away on holiday. Thursday 17 December will be our last class for 2020 Thursday 7 January our classes will resume for 2021 See you next week! Sensei Rachel

22.01.2022 Wow it was hot tonight and I am not talking about the weather ... you were all on fire with your focus and your execution of whatever was asked of you. Well done! Congratulations to Harry who graded to his 9th kyu (yellow tip) tonight. Outstanding effort. Tonight we "danced" with our stances and really put our leg muscles to the test. We partnered up at a distance (junior grades with senior grades) and focussed on our strikes and blocks kihon, giving each other feedback al...ong the way. We finished off with a quick couple of rounds of our japanese memory terms game and I am so impressed with how well you are all remembering these! For those that stayed for extra training (and that was most of you) we worked our way through the katas from first kata ... running out of time at seuinchin. Don’t forget to keep practicing at home, that is when you will see a big growth in your karate. We only have such a short time together each week. Thank you to Sensei Andrew for your help tonight. Sensei Rachel P. S. Don’t forget to give me your goals!

20.01.2022 Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas!

19.01.2022 Aaaaand it’s a wrap! Thanks for coming along to our Christmas class for some intense training and then our Christmas party. It has been such a joy to be able to share in your karate journeys this year and I look forward to helping you smash through your goals in 2021. Don’t forget to take some time to think about setting your goals during the break and then share them with me or Sensei Andrew so we can help you achieve them.... Congratulations to our Students of the Year award winners: Hana Jack Tobias Jasmine Like I said in class tonight it was super hard to narrow down the list, so give yourselves a big pat in the back for putting in a top effort this year. Many many thanks to all the help I have received this year from Sensei Andrew, Sensei Jason and Sensei Sam. Have a wonderful Christmas and a fabulous New Year. Our class resumes 7 January. Sensei Rachel

18.01.2022 2020 has thrown all of us several curveballs but it's important to remember that adversity is a stepping stone on the path of personal growth. Each and every one of you have it within you to succeed and we are here alongside you to help. Keep strong!

18.01.2022 Fantastic effort tonight everyone. We were at our maximum tonight so please do remember to keep using the booking system (as you have been doing). Top effort for our orange and above performing their first kata in mirror image and blue and above doing the same with saifa. Thank you to Sensei Jason who ran a kumite group. I am told Lily and Millie were both stand outs in that group.... Well done to those of you who worked with me on some striking and blocking combos as well as working on our explosiveness and hips. You all did so well, but of particular mention in that group has to be Nuwindi, Ryan, Raiden and Jayden. If you have kick shields, please bring them with you next week (yes, we continue to train in the school holidays). Sensei Rachel

18.01.2022 Good luck to everyone who is grading today.

17.01.2022 Did you know... the original Karate Kid film was released in Australia on this day 1984? Coincidentally, that's the same year as Kancho Sullivan founded GKR Kar...ate! We're sure most of you remember Mr Miyagi's fourth lesson for Daniel-san - "Paint the Fence". Here's a quick excerpt from Shihan Anthony Ryan's seminar earlier this month to get you moving, and bring back some memories.

17.01.2022 Great job by Senseis Andrew, Sam and Jason taking the class for me last night. I missed you all and look forward to seeing you next week. I hear you all did really well. Welcome to Harry for his first class. Congratulations to Harry for receiving an award for great effort and for Jack receiving an award for awesome kata.... Sensei Rachel

17.01.2022 Bookings for this class will open up this Thursday night

16.01.2022 Wishing all of our student's, families and instructors a very Happy Easter.

16.01.2022 Dear GKR students and families, 2020 has been an extraordinary year, filled with many unexpected twists and turns. We thank you for your patience as our classes... closed and openedand closed again in various parts of the world. Despite the chaos, the events of this year have no doubt made us more resilient and reminded us not to take our good health for granted. Our thoughts are with those who have been adversely affected by the events of this year and we thank everyone who has been working on the frontlines providing health care or other essential services throughout the most difficult times. On behalf of everyone at GKR Karate, we would like to wish you a Merry Christmas and a safe, healthy and Happy New Year. Our first day back for classes next year is January the 4th. Please check with your local dojo for reopening dates. We look forward to seeing you in 2021!

16.01.2022 Thank you for using the booking system. This needs to stay in place until government restrictions change (and GKR Karate decides it is appropriate) so please continue to do so. Please also remember to edit your booking if you can no longer come to allow others the opportunity to join in. It was great to see so many of you in the dojo in your shiny new belts too, congratulations again!... This week’s japanese karate memory terms are for: - short punch; and - ready stance. Let’s see who can remember them next week. Well done to those of you that remembered ura uchi (forward back fist) and shiko dachi (sumo stance). Make sure you keep practicing your karate at home and let’s see who remembers to do their homework (hips turning in long forward stance ... give it a go with a broom handle or something similar). https://www.signupgenius.com/go/gkrkarateregion2

15.01.2022 Join us tomorrow night for a "stance dance" and some focus on our strikes and blocks kihon. We will try to find time for a game this week also. Extra training will see more ongoing development of our kata.... I can't wait to see you! Don't forget to book: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/gkrkarateregion2 Sensei Rachel Ps make sure you hydrate plenty during the day as it’s supposed to be quite warm

15.01.2022 A huge congratulations to everyone who graded today. Especially Shriyan, Tobias, Ryan, Yasindi, Joshua, Hana, Josiah, Ezekiel, Jesse and Brendan. So proud of you all.

14.01.2022 Good luck to all those attending tomorrow’s Region 2 Grading!! This will be the final grading for 2020 and will surely be a great event. As the saying goes ‘go hard, or go harder!’

12.01.2022 Well done to Jayden, Matthew and Cooper for completing their first class as 8th kyus (yellow belts). Tonight we started with some fun trying to retrieve pegs from our partners gi while protecting our own. We learnt about blocking and moving around and using fakes while we were doing it. We then got together in a big circle to practice some basic fundamentals from kata. We finished it off with kata drop off.... For those that stayed back for extra training we spent some time stretching and then sparring. Some special mentions from this weeks class to: - Raiden for great punches - Lily for awesome stances - Devin for fabulous blocks - Jack for his kata development - Jaxon for his enthusiasm in the peg game I hope to see you at Sunday’s kata development seminar. Have a great week everyone and let’s come to class next week in a fantastic mindset, ready to smash it! Sensei Rachel

11.01.2022 A huge congratulations to Jayden, Matther and Cooper who achieved their 8th kyu (yellow belt) today.

11.01.2022 It’s nearly grading time again! Join us for a grading format class tomorrow night (with a twist). I can’t wait to see you!

10.01.2022 And that's a wrap... Issue #5 of GKR Karate's official magazine is in the can and on the way to the printers. Secure your copy today: https://bit.ly/3tcI5bS

08.01.2022 Congratulations Ebony on successfully grading to green belt (8th kyu).

07.01.2022 What a fun Easter class tonight. We warmed up with relays starting with bunny hops, lunges, kokutsu dachi or zen kutsu dachi, frog hops and the grape vine. Next up we went through first kata together then split up into kata groups (1st and 2nd kata with Sensei Andrew, Saifa with Sensei Jason and Bassai Dai with me).... Yellow and above then performed their grade katas while the white belts watched. We finished our first hour of training with a karate version of a chocolate egg and spoon race. The rules were that a technically good stance was to be used to reach the other end of the dojo, then we could have our chocolate! For our extra training we worked on keeping low and strong in our stances for kata and practiced this while 4 fellow kareta-ka had their belts looped around the belt of the person performing kata. Emily managed to nail a near perfect crescent kick as she looped a belt, it was great to see! Training will be on as usual throughout the school holidays. With grading fast approaching, next week we will focus on our grading format. I hope you all enjoy a wonderful Easter! Sensei Rachel

07.01.2022 Hey Guys, Alot of people have been having trouble either cancelling or editing their bookings to classes via sign up genius. Here is a quick tutorial video from Sensei Daniel on how to do it!

07.01.2022 Only 3 days to go until Shihan Anthony Ryan's first ever online seminar! If you've never attended one of our online seminars, then now is the time. If you don't... have much space at home to train, don't worry - Shihan says, "I've home-trained regularly for many years so I'm used to training in a confined area. I'm excited to be sharing some of my regular drills with everyone, and I hope you’ll find the class both exciting and useful for your own home-training." Don't miss out on this fantastic opportunity to train with one of our foremost Instructors this Sunday. Register now at onlinedojo.gkrkarate.com/shihan-anthony-ryan-seminar A replay of the session will be made available to all participants soon after the event.

07.01.2022 Who remembers their japanese terms from last week? The good news is you have another week to practice them because I forgot to give you new ones this week! Just a reminder they are for: - short punch; and - ready stance. Let’s see who can remember them next week.... Tonight we welcomed Hudson for his first class and it was nice to see Devin and Gurmann again for their second class. Remember to keep practicing what you have learned in class at home. See next week! Sensei Rachel https://www.signupgenius.com/go/gkrkarateregion2

06.01.2022 Celebrate your wins, and grow from the lessons of your disappointments. You will never regret giving your all!

05.01.2022 I had a lot of fun tonight and hope you did too! Welcome to Alec for his first class tonight. Great job! We warmed up with kata and moved into self defence. We fell safely and popped up into guard. Then we learnt a couple of ways to escape wrist grabs and lepel grabs using kata bunkai.... For those that stayed on for extra training we sparred. Starting off slowly as scientists - studying our partners moves to look for opportunities. We learned how to do a turning back kick and played with this with our sparring too. For a bit of fun, we finished off with some cascading kata (see videos). Thank you so much to Senseis Andrew and Sam for your help. Reminders of some upcoming key dates: For our dojo: - 17 Dec 2020 (last class for the year) - 7 Jan 2020 (first class for 2021) For our region: - 13 Dec 2020 (final grading for 2020) Sensei Rachel

04.01.2022 Congratulations to Devin for grading to his 9th kyu (yellow tip) tonight. Also to Jayden, Matthew and Cooper for being invited to attempt to grade to their 9th kyu (yellow belt) this Sunday. Tonight we worked through our grading format and we have lots to practice. Some special mentions from this weeks class to:... - Jahkai for great kicks - Anita for awesome stances - Elijah for fabulous uchi ukes - Tobias for his kata development - Jayden for his focus - Andrew for growth in his Bassai Dai We will spend some time working on kata next week. Have a great week everyone. Sensei Rachel

03.01.2022 Bookings now open!

02.01.2022 What a fantastic night to train! We had the big roller door open this evening which allowed the beautiful evening air into our dojo. Welcome to Ryan who joined us for a trial class tonight and did a really great job. Our partner work with tennis balls was to help you work on pushing forwards with our strikes and stances in our kumite followed by reflex/reactive training.... Our kata groups were designed to fine tune our first kata followed by an opportunity to build our confidence by performing for the class. You all did really well. Make sure to practice what you learned throughout the week. Looking forward to seeing you next week. Sensei Rachel.

02.01.2022 Congratulations to Kristie for grading to 7th kyu-ho (orange tip) and Memphis, Merino and Aria for grading to their 9th kyu (yellow tip). We began tonight with a chat about etiquette followed by our standard warm up. We then formed a circle and went through mexican wave kihon. This is where we performed our strikes and blocks one by one as a mexican wave in our circle. It was awesome to train alongside you and watch all of your techniques in silence as we did this. I c...an see a lot of growth in you all. After a drink break we came back together with partners and carried out several rounds of tap/tap, simulating injuries along the way (eg only putting weight on one leg, or one eye closed or one hand behind your back). We then performed first kata together and moved onto our grade katas. We finished off with a round of sally up/sally down with a choice of caterpillars or lunges. Then for extra training we split into two groups where Sensei Andrew continued to work on first kata with the white belts and orange and above were with me where we worked our way up the katas (starting with saifa). We ended up staying about 10-15 minutes over time as we made it all the way up to hangetsu.

01.01.2022 Congratulations to Tobias and Raiden who graded to 7th kyu-ho (orange tip) tonight. Fantastic work tonight working through some line drills and stepping up to the challenge of putting a combination together. Make sure you all practice your homework this week ready to show me next week (practice your step across mawate/turn. Practice your zen kutsu dachi - long forward stance and not losing strong technique in your strikes or blocks while moving in stance).... Look forward to seeing you next week. Sensei Rachel
