23.01.2022 Dear GKR students and families, 2020 has been an extraordinary year, filled with many unexpected twists and turns. We thank you for your patience as our classes... closed and openedand closed again in various parts of the world. Despite the chaos, the events of this year have no doubt made us more resilient and reminded us not to take our good health for granted. Our thoughts are with those who have been adversely affected by the events of this year and we thank everyone who has been working on the frontlines providing health care or other essential services throughout the most difficult times. On behalf of everyone at GKR Karate, we would like to wish you a Merry Christmas and a safe, healthy and Happy New Year. Our first day back for classes next year is January the 4th. Please check with your local dojo for reopening dates. We look forward to seeing you in 2021!

23.01.2022 That moment where Sensei David jumps up on a stack of chairs to take an impromptu photo and everyone goes "Whaaat!?" Well maybe not exactly like that, but what a great turnout to class on Thursday night. It's awesome to see more students returning after an extended break and seeing some fresh new faces over the past few weeks!

23.01.2022 How good was this little guy last night! Well done Kourosh for completing your first class. We look forward to seeing you as a regular member of the Heathridge team!

21.01.2022 Well another training year for Tuesday Heathrige class has ended. 2020 has bought a lot of challenges for everyone. It was wonderful to end on such a class full of fun. As usual though the well thought out plan and time table went out the window when hubby turned up with hot food and drinks to find the power point I’d confirmed was available didn’t work. So instead of playing all games then breaking and having something to eat like normal, it was eat half way through then re...turn to games. Also had to make sure low energy game was first when we came back to class so no one was sick from to much food or drinks. All went well thank goodness and was enjoyed by everyone. We finished with awarding some special certificates and everyone receiving a small bag of lollies to take home. Student of the Year 2020 Criteria: personal attendance, training commitment (in and out of the dojo) to their karate journey, willingness to follow any instructions and willingness to offer any form of help to other students, plus much more. Awarded to Tom Hanlon (Adult) Skye Reboul (Junior) Most Improved 2020 Criteria: a student who has shown the most improvement in all aspects of their karate journey during 2020. Awarded to Odette Mills (Adult) Jesse Ward (Junior) Odette unfortunately wasn’t at class to accept her certificate due to her daughters graduation from primary to high school being on the same night. Her award was accepted by her son Cody. Perseverance Award 2020 Criteria: a willingness to work towards or overcome personal challenges in their karate journey no matter how difficult or challenging. Awarded to Cody McCullaugh and Aiden Burke. Awesome Award Criteria: as said, a student that is awesome in everything they do - ability, willingness to follow instructions straight away, etiquette, willing to help other students and a wonderful disposition and large smile every week and much more left unsaid. Awarded to Levi Smith I wish I could award a certificate to every student in class as you all train consistently week after week and have made great improvements in you personal journeys. I enjoy teaching you every week. Also a huge thank you to Sensei Anita who has been a wonderful Sempi, helping our students achieve their goal along side me. I hope you know how much you help us all every week. Last thank you is to the instructors who train at our class. Having you guys training in class with full commitment to your own personal training shows other students that it’s not a belt level that determines a students effort in class but a personal attitude to commitment and improvement. Im also sure everyone will agree with me that they also enjoy the friendship and mentoring they have with you all as well. Thank you all for a great year. Looking forward to seeing you all in 2021. Have a wonderful Christmas and New Year Sensei Trish.

21.01.2022 It was an awesome class Friday night down at the Heathridge Dojo. With the State Titles around the corner, we spent the entire session working on Kumite. We started off with working solo on our basic Kumite techniques before partnering up for some light Jiyu Kumite. We than ran through various blocking and countering drills either on the spot or incorporating footwork. ... We finished off with another round of Jiyu Kumite to try to implement some of the drills we worked on. We welcomed Tania, Helen’s daughter-in-law to the Heathridge Dojo on a Friday night for the first time. It’s awesome seeing family training together! Tania recently started her Karate journey with Sensei Tony at the Duncraig Dingoes Dojo and has also trained with Sensei Trish on Tuesday nights at the Heathridge Dojo. She did a great job working on Kumite for the first time and at the end of class she was awarded her 9th kyu white belt yellow tip. Congratulations Tania! It’s great to have you on the Heathridge team and we look forward to guiding you on your karate journey!

20.01.2022 Hey there all you Heathridge Dragons! It’s awesome to be back in the dojo and the start of the year is a great opportunity to get back to basics and that’s exactly what we did Friday night at the Heathridge Dojo. We worked through all the striking and blocking techniques in Heiko Dachi as well as all the kicks in stages and the whole kick medium pace. ... We then focused on stances by moving forwards and backwards through all the stances without any hand techniques. We worked on all our blocking techniques with a partner by moving forwards striking and backwards blocking in Zenkutsu Dachi. We finished off running through Kata from Taigyoku Shodan to Kanku Dai. At the end of class we acknowledged a student for the outstanding year they had. It gave me great pleasure to announce that the Friday night Heathridge Dragons Student of the Year is Viha Warusawithana! Viha has been training consistently on Friday night and the Kata & Kumite class as well as being a member of the WA State Team. He won Gold in the Region 13 Kata Tournament and Gold for Kata and Silver for Kumite at the WA State Titles. Last year he took his karate went to a new level. Watching him train in the dojo and perform at tournaments is was clear that there was a new air of confidence. His karate is maturing as he is. Viha has a fantastic attitude and excellent etiquette. He is always applying himself and looking to improve his karate. He demonstrates all the aspects of a true karateka and is a very deserving winner of the 2020 Heathridge Dragons Student of the Year. Congratulations Viha! See all you Dragons next week

16.01.2022 What an awesome weekend of karate it’s been for the Heathridge Dojo! On Thursday night at Sensei Julia’s class we had young Sydnee join us for the first time. Sydnee normally trains with Sensei Garth at the Beldon Bats Dojo on Wednesday nights and she did a great job following along with the orange and green belt grading format. Well done Sydnee! On Friday night we had the privilege of having Sensei Gavin and son Levi come and train with us. We ran through the Kihon grading ...formats and Kata from Taigyoku Shodan to Empi. To finish off the class and with the Kancho Sullivan seminar on Sunday, it was the perfect opportunity to have a go at running through one of Kancho’s own katas, Sho-Kan-Te. Corey also trains at the Beldon Bats Dojo and both he and Sydnee graded through to their 8th kyu yellow belt. Congratulations Corey and Sydnee! We then had some fun with a few focus mitt drills and finished off with some self defence applications against a swinging punch. We welcomed some students along to the Heathridge Dragons Dojo, ei...ther for the first time, the first time on a Friday night or for the first time in a long time. 09.01.2022 What a fantastic training session last night with 22 students on the floor including Joey and Alicia joining us for the first time. Everyone was put through their paces performing the grading formats and it’s not often we smash out the Kihon so quickly. It was virtually mind over matter with the body being put to the test and determination push through the fatigue to focus on the areas each individual wishes to improve. We also congratulated Marc for achieving his 9th Kyu. Marc also trains at the Wanneroo dojo and it’s great to see the high level of etiquette and perseverance at this stage of his Karate journey. Well done Marc!

07.01.2022 Some of you may remember or not know that Sensei Julia, Sensei David and Sensei Trish had an amazing training experience with Sensei Tetsuhiro Hokama (Goju Ryu 10th Dan) in Okinawa 2018. 05.01.2022 Calling all Heathridge Dragons to Beach Training

04.01.2022 Congratulations to all the students who moved through to their next grade level at the September grading on Sunday. The Heathridge Dojo was well represented with 4 students hitting the floor giving it their best. Bruce started his karate journey at the Beldon Bats Dojo and is now also training at the Heathridge and Wanneroo Dojos. He has previous martial arts experience so it’s no surprise that he has excellent etiquette and is quickly developing some good karate resulting ...in him being awarded his 7th kyu orange belt. Congratulations Bruce! Odette also started her karate journey at the Beldon Bats Dojo and has been training regularly with Sensei Trish on Tuesdays. She has shown good progression and it was fantastic to see her rewarded with her 6th kyu green belt. Congratulations Odette! Tom. Now Tom is one of the most inspirational students we’ve ever had the pleasure of having train in our dojo. He trains 4, 5 and sometimes 6 times a week across the Heathridge, Wanneroo and Beldon Dojos. He has a fantastic attitude, has worked so hard on his karate and is truly deserving of receiving his 5th kyu blue belt. Congratulations Tom! Dino has been training regularly at the Heathridge and Darch Dojos after having an extended break from training a couple of years ago. He has made great progress and has demonstrated much improved technique. He was pushed to the limit during the grading but his perseverance and determination seen him awarded the rank of 3rd kyu brown belt. Congratulations Dino! Sensei Julia, Sensei David, Sensei Trish and Sensei Aaron are extremely proud of you all. We can’t wait to see you at the dojo sporting your new belts. Congratulations again everyone!

04.01.2022 What a fantastic turnout with 27 on the floor at the Heathridge dojo on Thursday night! It was a big night overall starting with presenting Tom with the torii gate display, that he gave Sensei David to design, produce and apply the club logo and lettering to it. Pretty awesome! Next we unveiled the new Heathridge Dragons dojo banner designed by Sensei David. We then welcomed Khaung and Lum to their first class. Both had a great attitude and really gave it their best throughou...t the session. Well done Khaung and Lum! The purpose of the class was to focus on improving our kicking technique. We worked on the finer details to make each kick more effective in terms of having the right preparation, harnessing power from the hips and relevant muscle groups, weight distribution & accuracy. After that it was great to see everyone smash the kick shields, to receive instant feedback of whether their kicking technique was effective or not. At the end of the session, we congratulated Courtney for progressing to her 7th Kyu ho grade level. Courtney has been very patient and consistently worked hard every class to achieve her goals. Keep up the great work Courtney! On a final note, tomorrow is the State Titles tournament, so we wish everyone all the best in showing your true Karate spirit! See you all again soon!

03.01.2022 It was an awesome fast paced, high energy class on Friday night at the Heathridge Dojo that got the blood pumping and everyone working up a sweat. We had Sensei Julia join us in place of Sensei Mark for the night. We continued our focus on Ashi Sabaki (Footwork) by working on Kumite combinations in both offensive and defensive scenarios. ... We looked at what striking and kicking techniques and combinations of the two we could use with the various footwork that we worked on last week. We also welcomed young Chloe, Makayla’s sister to the Heathridge Dojo. Chloe did her first class at the Tapping Tigers Dojo and it was fantastic to have her come and train with us. She did really well following along with the footwork and then got to work one on one with Sensei Julia. It was great to see her enjoy the class and have a smile on her face at the end. She enjoyed the class so much she didn’t want to leave the dojo! See all you Heathridge Crew next week!
