24.01.2022 Goodbye and good riddance to yellow belt!

22.01.2022 Always train 110%

20.01.2022 This is what 30 plus years of dedication and hard work gets you. Well done Renshi Tregenza.

18.01.2022 A huge congratulations to my karate Shid-sha (mentor) and friend, Sensei Craig Lennox on his Go (5th) dan grading today. Also well done to all Region 16 karate-ka who graded today as well. You truely showed what our region is made off!

17.01.2022 Many Karate-ka like to focus on Ikken Hisatsu 'One strike finish'. So this drill firstly, allows us to practice this. In this case, with a Reverse punch, but ob...viously there are many techniques to achieve this. Counter-attacking (White Crane ideology) is another way to finish somebody quickly, and quality counter fighters often destroy the confidence of the Tiger fighter (attack to finish). So the third part to this drill is to fake a Tiger style technique to draw the Crane's (counter-attacker's) attention, to then use a Dragon technique with an Ikken Hisatsu attitude. 14.01.2022 Awesome class tonight with an in class grading! Strong discipline and excellent focus shown by all - and not just by the students grading! Well done to Kerry Thorley, Toby Thorley and Brielle Robins on 9th kyu yellow tip, and a late but very well deserved 8th kyu yellow belt grading to Jake McPhee. Special mention goes to Alex Conner who trained so focused he had our guest Sensei, Sensei Tim, asking if I was sure he was an orange belt. All students pushed themselves tonight and I am honoured to see you grow and develop in your abilities.

08.01.2022 A good read: https://www.gkrkarate.com//real-life-confrontation-self-d/

07.01.2022 As karate-ka we sometimes fall into the trap of mistakenly thinking/assuming that in a self defense situation it is going to be all upright fighting. That, in that situation we are only going to be defending against certain upright attacks, such as: punches/kicks, a possible grab (lapel/shirt/hair) and punch, or maybe a headlock. And that when faced with this situation all we will need to do is fire out our trusty gyaku tsuki (reverse punch) with our best kiai and that will... be all they wrote for most would be attackers - maybe a 1-2 combo followed up with nice head level mawashi geri (round kick) for the really tough bad guys. But in reality while a lot of fights may start with a punch, few fights stay upright. Because funnily enough, your attacker doesn't want to stand there exchanging blows. They want to hurt, not be hurt. They want a position of dominance. Unless they know that they have the advantage, they will soon look for the dominate position, which may come in the form of a throw, or a tackle, or a takedown. They want to be where they can hit but not be hit back, where they have the power and the control. And with every man and his dog watching MMA, the number instances that these incidents are being brought to the ground is increasing as "ground and pound" becomes ever more popular. So it is crucial we train on how to A) prevent ourselves being taken to the ground, and b) how to defend ourselves from the the ground of we are taken there. Tonight's class was centered around ground defense: Preventing ourselves from being taken to the ground, defending ourselves once we were on the ground, and getting back up safely. As always, I get so involved in teaching/training that I forget to take a lot of photos, but I did get these quick snaps. Remember don't just train what your good at, train what your uncomfortable with as this is where you'll find the sweetest rewards. See more

06.01.2022 To all GKR students, please find a short video from our founder and Chief Instructor, Kancho Robert Sullivan.

06.01.2022 Well done to all the Kaleen dojo students who completed at the Region 16 tournament today. Mark Timbrell 3rd in Kata, Elayna Conner 2nd in Kata, and Jim McDonald 1st in Kata and 3rd in Kumite. Medals and winning/losing aside, you all did great today. Medals, trophies and podium placings are great, but really only tickle our ego's. The real treasure in doing tournaments is learning lessons that will not only improve our Karate, but also provide us with the tools to grow our character and thus improve our lives.

06.01.2022 Congratulations to Mark Timbrell, Daniel Timbrell, Elayna Conner, Alex Conner and Jim McDonald who all graded to their orange belts yesterday. Special hats of to Jim who last graded to his yellow belt 8 years ago and to Mark, who did a triathlon yesterday morning before his grading

06.01.2022 Class is on this evening. Hope to see you there.

05.01.2022 Similar to what we covered a week ago. Remember if you want to improve your kata, increase your understanding of the katas bunkai.

05.01.2022 Well done to Riya for grading to orange belt. Due to other commitments she couldn't make the grading on the weekend so I had special permission from Sensei Greg to grade her in class. But don't think she got of easy, she still worked for it - just ask the rest of the class who had to do the grading class with her! It was a great effort by the whole class, but a real step up for Riya.
