20.01.2022 This is the first principle in Funakoshi’s book, The 20 guiding principles of Karate-Do. Rei is a sense of respect and esteem that starts with the self and is t...ransferred to others. Funakoshi states if a martial artist lacks this respectful heart (Rei) then they are only practising contemptible violence. It is for this reason that we must never lose our sense of respect and esteem for ourselves and our training partners. On a much deeper level it is a connection to the oneness, knowing that we are all connected. We are all ‘the one’ or part of the one. We influence our environment and those around us with our energy just like we are influenced by the energy of our environment and those around us. This is why we start with Rei and must maintain it throughout our practise and indeed, beyond the dojo. Yoga practitioners call this Namaste. It is when we honour ourselves and honour others by recognising that thread, that part of us that exists within us all.. whatever you choose to call it. See more

Please click through for more information on these strategies.
