14.01.2022 Reef HQ storing solar energy as ice Reef HQ’s aquatic inhabitants will be kept comfy with the addition of a new thermal storage system that stores energ...y from the sun, as ice. The energy stored in the ice is used to regulate the temperature of the fish tanks when the solar panels are not generating any energy for example, at night. Julian Hudson from Glaciem Cooling Technologies, which installed the system, said it is a world first to use the technology in an aquarium. One of the big issues with renewable energy is you can’t control the sun or the weather, Mr Hudson said. We take the electrical energy that is generated from the PV (photovoltaic) panels to run a unit which confers electrical energy into mechanical energy and then into thermal energy, he said. The unit was switched on this week and has generated a 9 tonne block of ice already. Reef HQ’s Sasha Thyer said the surplus energy generated by their 260KW solar system previously went to waste as they couldn’t export it to the grid. We really take energy efficiency seriously and we feel it is part of our role to showcase these technologies to others, Ms Thyer said. Reef HQ's tanks are kept between 25 and 28 degrees year round and total 4 million litres capacity.
