25.01.2022 SMD 5, avoiding Long Horns!

23.01.2022 The hot weather is coming... we are ready if you need us, but make sure you activate your bushfire plans..

20.01.2022 We will do a post on Tacker's EFS/CFS service during coming week. Needless to say so well respected in our community. Deepest condolences to his family.

20.01.2022 A message from Chief Officer, Mark Jones: "2020 has thrown plenty of curve balls our way. "I am very aware of the stress that the bushfires and COVID-19 have p...laced on South Australian families. The social, financial and emotional strain has made it a trying time for so many. "Please take some time today to ask your friends and colleagues, "Are you OK?" and don't accept a first answer or a fob off. "It doesn't cost a thing to ask the question, but it could start a conversation that could change a life."

18.01.2022 Speed of Yumali fire a prime example of the dangers faced this Bushfire Season Late winter rains have resulted in large volumes of grass and crop growth across ...the state. Country Fire Service State Duty Commander Yvette Dowling said, the extra growth in areas that are yet to be harvested increase the risk of fast-moving fires. When fire enters crops or heavily grassed areas, we see very fast-moving fire, Ms Dowling said. The Yumali fire consumed almost 5,000 hectares in four hours. The fire travelled with such speed that it was not safe for us to put our trucks in front of it in an attempt to extinguish, Ms Dowling said. The fire burned with such ferocity that at times it was difficult for our firebombers to attack the flames. Fire investigators from SA Police, SA Metropolitan Fire Service and SA Country Fire Service are attending this morning to determine the cause of the fire. Unfortunately, one house and one shed has been destroyed in the fire. The CFS airfleet completed 48 drops of firefighting products onto the fire, totalling more than 110,000 litres of product dropped from above. Two people were injured during the fire. A CFS four-wheel drive was involved in a head-on collision with a private vehicle on the fireground, with all occupants cleared of major injuries. This fire has given us an early reminder that, even though we have had recent rainfall and cooler conditions, there is still a great potential for large scale fires. You need to ensure your property is cleaned up now, and you have a Bushfire Survival Plan. Under COVID-19 lockdown conditions, residents are allowed to leave their properties in cases of emergency. More details on how to create a Bushfire Survival Plan can be found at cfs.sa.gov.au See more

17.01.2022 Tomorrow isn't any better.

14.01.2022 Training tonight would be draughting (Thank You to Hanley Buses for IBC) out of new pod that was donated to our brigade. Oh no it's not! It's a structure fire, but not practice. Thank you to all who responded, great work. Had crew who managed a few new skills. Thank you Georgetown before Stop called, also Duty Officer (great to have them there), and to all those in our community who offered assistance. Nothing like being there for one another. Thank you all, and take care. BC.

13.01.2022 Chasing information. This motor and pump have a long history with our brigade, has been on two appliances (Blitz and 1610) and then converted to an axillary water supply. GO Pete remembers being used only once in this configuration, to pump out subway under railway line. As no longer used we have approached South Australian Volunteer Fire Fighters Museum at Naracoorte if they would like to display it? They have accepted and would be good if we can send some photographs and hi...story with it. Would also be nice if anyone in our community has any photographs and/or history of appliances past and present, station/s past and present, and members past and present they could donate or we could scan or copy. We need to document our past for our future. You can contact us through here, training 1st, 3rd, or 5th Wednesday of month at 1800 hrs (6:00 pm) at station, any of our members, or Flipper (0439 881 411).

13.01.2022 Sometimes things don't go as fluently as they should. Thank you all who responded or rang last night.

13.01.2022 Severe Weather Warning for DAMAGING WINDS for people in Adelaide Metropolitan, Mount Lofty Ranges, West Coast, Lower Eyre Peninsula, Eastern Eyre Peninsula, Yor...ke Peninsula, Flinders, Mid North, Kangaroo Island and parts of Murraylands, North West Pastoral and North East Pastoral districts. Strong and gusty north to northwesterly winds ahead of a cold front which will move across the far west of the State in the late afternoon and evening. DAMAGING NORTH TO NORTHWESTERLY WINDS averaging 50-65 km/h at times, with wind gusts around 90 km/h are expected in the west early this afternoon. This area of damaging winds will extend eastwards across central and eastern parts of the warning area, including the Mount Lofty Ranges, overnight. Overnight, damaging winds are most likely over elevated ground and southeastern slopes. Reduced visibility with areas of dust are also possible in western parts of the warning area today and northeastern parts on Wednesday. Winds will gradually ease in western parts of the warning area during the evening as winds turn west to southwesterly behind the cold front. Locations which may be affected include Cook, Port Lincoln and Cleve extending to Strathalbyn, Murray Bridge and Hawker overnight. The State Emergency Service advises that people should: * Move vehicles under cover or away from trees; * Secure or put away loose items around your property. * Stay indoors, away from windows, while conditions are severe. http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDS21037.shtml

12.01.2022 Severe Weather Warning for DAMAGING, LOCALLY DESTRUCTIVE WINDS for people in Adelaide Metropolitan, Mount Lofty Ranges, West Coast, Lower Eyre Peninsula, Easter...n Eyre Peninsula, Yorke Peninsula, Flinders, Mid North, Kangaroo Island, Riverland, Murraylands and parts of Upper South East, Lower South East, North West Pastoral and North East Pastoral districts. A vigorous front associated with a complex low pressure system will sweep across the State this evening and early Wednesday morning. The front will first impact western coasts from late this afternoon then move eastwards to reach central parts including Adelaide around midnight. Damaging wind gusts in excess of 90 km/h are likely with squally showers and thunderstorms for a period ahead of and following the front as it moves across the warning area. In addition, localised destructive wind gusts in excess of 120 km/h are a risk with stronger showers and thunderstorms, mainly about western facing coastal areas with and just ahead of the front. Damaging winds averaging 50-70 km/h at times are also possible away from shower activity. The threat of severe winds will move eastwards and ease later Wednesday morning. A cold, fresh to strong west to southwesterly airstream with scattered showers will persist. For the Adelaide area, the main risk period of severe winds will exist from around 9 pm tonight, through to around 3 am Wednesday morning. Locations which may be affected include Adelaide, Port Lincoln, Whyalla, Ceduna, Maitland, Murray Bridge and Kingscote. The State Emergency Service advises that people should: * Move vehicles under cover or away from trees; * Secure or put away loose items around your property. * Keep clear of fallen power lines; * Stay indoors, away from windows, while conditions are severe. http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDS21037.shtml

12.01.2022 I would think a lot of brigades are recruiting, if your up their way pop on in.

12.01.2022 This morning the South Australian Government announced its full response to the Independent Review of South Australia’s 2019/20 bushfire season, and has announc...ed nearly $100 million of funding ahead of the upcoming fire danger season. Today, a $49 million action plan has been unveiled in addition to the $48.5 million announced in July. This means a total of $97.5 million will be injected into the state’s Emergency Services Sector and the Department for Environment and Water (DEW) to equip the state with stronger resources in preparation for future catastrophic bushfire events. From a CFS perspective this will include an AVL trial, Thermal Imaging Cameras for all Groups, permanent CFS resources based on Kangaroo Island and more regional resources including one full time employee for SPAM. https://www.safecom.sa.gov.au//sa_governments_comprehensiv

11.01.2022 There's a lesson or two in there I reckon!

10.01.2022 TOTAL FIRE BANS have been declared for 28 November 2020 in the following Fire Ban Districts: Northwest Pastoral - Severe Northeast Pastoral - Severe Eastern Eyr...e Peninsula - Severe Flinders - Extreme Mid North - Extreme Mount Lofty Ranges - Severe Yorke Peninsula - Severe Riverland - Severe Murraylands - Severe Where Total Fire Bans have been declared, very hazardous fire weather conditions are predicted. The Total Fire Ban will apply for 24 hours from midnight tonight to midnight tomorrow. The CFS recommends that you implement your Bushfire Survival Plan. FIRE DANGER RATING Where fire ban districts have a forecast fire danger rating of Extreme, only well prepared, well constructed and actively defended houses are likely to offer safety during a fire. Where fire ban districts have a forecast fire danger rating of Severe, well prepared and actively defended houses can offer safety during a fire. COVID-19 ADVICE If you are quarantining or isolating in an area of fire risk, you can leave that location if you are in an emergency or if your home is unsafe - but try to get back as soon as you safely can. If you need to attend a relief centre or a Bushfire Last Resort Refuge, you need to stay outside, alert emergency services at the location and follow their instructions. Advise emergency services that you have left quarantine or isolation due to COVID-19. Please ensure your emergency kits are updated to include masks, sanitiser, and any other items you may need to keep yourself safe and prevent any potential spread of COVID-19. BUSHFIRE PLAN If you don't have a plan to ensure your survival, leaving early before a fire starts is your safest option. In making your plan, you should be aware that in high fire danger conditions, essential services including mains-fed electricity and water supply may not be available due to the prevailing weather conditions. Landowners are asked to adhere to local harvest codes of practice which are available from your local council. Landowners are also asked to ensure that any burn-off activities conducted today are fully extinguished before midnight tonight. Agencies are advised to activate their Total Fire Ban procedures in preparation for these predicted fire weather conditions. For further information contact the Bushfire Information Hotline on 1800 362 361 or visit https://www.cfs.sa.gov.au

06.01.2022 Key messaging for bushfire safety in SA given COVID restrictions From midnight tonight, a six-day initial stage of ‘circuit breaker’ restrictions will be implem...ented to protect the South Australian community from the spread of COVID-19. These restrictions may affect how you follow CFS bushfire safety advice. Review your Bushfire Survival Plan using the up-to-date advice on the SA Health website www.sahealth.sa.gov.au/COVID-19 UNDER LOCKDOWN During this initial restriction period, you can only leave your home for limited reasons. This includes during a bushfire emergency or if your home is unsafe. Some relocation destinations in Bushfire Safer Places will not be available due to these COVID-19 restrictions. - Cinemas and other public venues will be closed. - Visits to shopping centres are for essential food shopping only If you plan to stay with relatives or friends when you relocate to a Bushfire Safer Place, consider alternative arrangements if your plan is to stay with elderly relatives or immuno-compromised relatives or friends. This will reduce the risk of exposing vulnerable people to COVID-19. If you are in self-quarantine or self-isolation due to COVID-19, you can leave your home if you are in an emergency or your home is unsafe but try to get back into self-isolation as soon as you safely can. During an emergency, if you need to attend an emergency relief centre or a Bushfire Last Resort Refuge, you need to stay outside, alert emergency services (e.g. SAPOL, relief authorities at the location etc) and follow instructions. You must ensure you advise emergency services that you have been forced to leave self-quarantine or self-isolation due to the emergency and that: - you are a close contact of a known COVID-19 case - you have recently tested positive to COVID-19 or if - you are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 or - you are in self-quarantine because you have recently returned from interstate. UNDER RESTRICTIONS State government restrictions are in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This may affect how you follow CFS bushfire safety advice. Leaving early during COVID-19 will be a little different this summer. While COVID-19 restrictions are in place, you can leave your home during an emergency or if your home is unsafe. Consider the following in your leave early plan to protect yourself and your loved ones from COVID-19: During COVID-19 restrictions you may travel if you are doing so as part of your bushfire plan. If you are unwell or have symptoms, isolate yourself from others and ensure you always wear a face covering and get tested as soon as possible. Add to your 'Emergency Kit' - Additional face masks - Hand sanitiser - more than 60% alcohol - Antibacterial wipes Follow SA Health COVID-19 advice - Wear a face mask - Practise good hygiene. Wash or sanitise your hands when you enter someone else’s home, if possible - Do not shake hands, hug or kiss as a greeting - Maintain physical distancing, keep at least 1.5 metres away from others

04.01.2022 If you live around the Spencer Gulf, you might have noticed a few of our planes flying in and out of the Port Pirie airport over the past couple of days. This w...eek our Air Operations team are conducting training drills in the Telowie Gorge Conservation Park, just east of Port Germein. The exercises will train personnel to become accredited Air Attack Supervisors, allowing them to be responsible for the safe and efficient coordination of aircraft operations when any firefighting aircraft are operating at or near a fire. Air Operations Support Personnel are also be using the drills to refine their firebombing aircraft re-loading skills and ground-to-air communications.

04.01.2022 CFS disappointed about unauthorised fireground drone use On Friday evening, crews attending the Templers fire were made aware of an unauthorised drone being flown in close proximity to the fireground. "Firegrounds are incredibly complex and the unauthorised use of drones is not acceptable" CFS Manager of State Air Operations, Nik Stanley explained,... "During the Kangaroo Island fires earlier this year, we had to ground our firebombers and aerial support because members of the public were using drones. It was a massive waste of our time and resources. "While the operator complied with the CFS's request to cease using the drone on Friday, it was an added concern that crews shouldn't have to deal with, among all their other tasks and responsibilities while attending a fire." There is a strict 5nm (9.2 km) exclusion zone for all unauthorised aircraft around firegrounds. Breaching this exclusion zone, or interfering with aerial firefighting, is illegal, and can carry heavy fines if you are found guilty. Information on the rules around drone use can be found at www.casa.gov.au/drones/rules.

04.01.2022 Severe Thunderstorm Warning for DAMAGING WINDS For people in Eastern Eyre Peninsula, Flinders, Mid North, Riverland, Murraylands, Upper South East and parts of ...Mount Lofty Ranges, Yorke Peninsula, Lower South East, North West Pastoral and North East Pastoral districts. Issued at 11:06 am Sunday, 22 November 2020. Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce damaging wind gusts in excess of 90 km/h in the warning area today, mostly during the afternoon and early evening. Locations which may be affected include Whyalla, Renmark, Port Augusta, Port Pirie, Clare, Murray Bridge, Naracoorte, Bordertown, Hawker, Jamestown, Roxby Downs and Woomera. While thunderstorms are also occurring outside of this warning area, they are not expected to be severe. The State Emergency Service advises that people should: * Secure or put away loose items around your property. * Move cars under cover or away from trees. * Keep clear of fallen power lines. * Stay indoors, away from windows, while storms are nearby.
