24.01.2022 Call for Volunteer Mum and Baby We are looking for parents who are dealing with breastfeeding challenges with their baby, who would volunteer to help us ups...kill health professionals attending our Masterclasses next Thursday evening, 8 October from 7.30-9.30pm (AEST). Daylight saving time will be applicable from this weekend so timing will be 8.30-10.30pm for some states. All Possums’ events are according to Queensland time (ie non-daylight savings time). This consultation will occur by Zoom, from the parents' home, so it doesn't matter where you are in the world (if you can manage the time zones!). We are looking for one mother with a baby who is 8 weeks or less and who is having breastfeeding challenges. Please email Cathryn at [email protected] if you are available to help us. We'd be very grateful! See more

22.01.2022 To say that we all have some significant concerns right now is an understatement. We're worried about how long this dystopian period in all of our lives is goin...g to last, how we’re going to pay our bills, and what life post-COVID-19 is going to look like. And of course, we all worry if we or a loved one is going to get sick, if so when, and just how sick we or they- might get. It’s as If we’re all just in a collective breath-hold on this. The people closest to me who have gotten sick, all of whom have had mild cases of COVID-19, have expressed a palpable feeling of relief because for them at least, for the moment, the anticipation of that unknown is gone: they’ve had it, it’s cycled through their household, and, at least for now, they are alive and well. While at this moment who will get sick- and how sick seems to be almost a lottery there are certain risk factors that appear to increase our chances of getting sick and very sick our frequency and intensity of exposure to the virus (i.e., less likely if you’re working from and sheltering at home versus being say, an emergency room doctor) and whether we have underlying medical conditions (asthma, immunosuppression due to an illness or medication used to treat an illness, diabetes, and heart or lung disease, for example). We also know that 85% of us who do contract this infection will have only a mild case, similar to cold symptoms or perhaps more moderate similar to flu symptoms; many, however, have not been and will not be so lucky. But given that there are no known treatments at this time, is there anything you can do to support your health should you get sick? Here’s what we know.

19.01.2022 How many people remember looking at the possums on my ceiling...... actually these beautiful creatures. I’ve had that poster there for a long time, but can’t bear to change it.

15.01.2022 Please be advised that the Gladstone GP Superclinic will close their doors from 1pm to 3pm today. Our phones will be diverted to our after hours message between... 1.30pm and 2.30pm. As with all Health Workers, the last few months have been quite stressful and the GGPSC team have provided an amazing amount of support and healthcare to our community. Everyday, I am thankful - and today, we will be taking some much deserved time out to support our wonderful work family. Thank you for your understanding and the kind words and support that we have been shown through this time also. I am proud to be a part of the GGPSC team, and I am proud to be a Gladstone local. With thanks, Annette (Practice Manager - Gladstone GP Superclinic and Calliope Medical Centre).

15.01.2022 Heading home after a big weekend in Sydney learning about treating Chronic Inflammation with Functional Medicine. Topics included Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Ehlers Danlos Syndrome and Mast Cell Activation Syndrome. Lots of Aha! Moments. Here is a picture with one of the lecturers, Dr Antony Underwood (Paediatrician, MBBS Syd, FRACP), who spoke about The Connective Tissue Disorders.

14.01.2022 What a wonderful book Dr Emilia has written! Mostly written for people who have experienced a life- changing illness, but I think we can all learn from her wisdom. I must admit I binge read it this afternoon, but I think I will re- read it slowly and work through each chapter as she recommends. Namaste, Dr Barb.

08.01.2022 Please be advised of the following measures being implemented in the Gladstone GP Superclinic, in regards to the COVID-19 Virus (Coronavirus). * Online bookings... are not available at this time. This is to ensure that we can screen each patient prior to their appointment being made. We are then able to determine which access to health care is most appropriate for each individual patient. These include, telephone and telehealth consultations. * Every patient will be telephoned and screened on the day, prior to their appointment within the surgery. This is to ensure that anyone that may be in the risk category, is attended to appropriately. * Any patients that have travelled overseas within the last month OR been in contact with someone who has travelled overseas in the last month OR has cold or flu symptoms OR have been in contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, must NOT present to our surgery. Phone triage will be conducted and the best course of care will be determined from that point. * All toys have been removed from our surgery to assist with infection control. * The latest advice from QLD Health stipulates that ONLY people that are in the risk category are to be referred for COVID-19 swab testing, due to a world wide shortage. * If you believe you may be at risk of contracting COVID-19 due to your individual health or family conditions, please contact the surgery for further advice. The health care of our patients and our staff is our main priority. Please know our phones will be busier and there may be a wait to reach our Reception staff. We appreciate your patience as this time. Our Practice Plan will be reviewed daily to ensure that it is compliant with the latest recommendations from QLD Health. Thank you, Management

08.01.2022 With best wishes for a Safe and Happy 2020. During the past few weeks I have had the opportunity to consult with some young adults, as they have returned to fa...mily for Christmas Celebrations, and come to see me for issues of concern to them. These are people whose conception I celebrated and first breath I witnessed, back when I was a young GP Obstetrician who had more than one patient ask - "are you old enough to do this?", prompting my husband to have my certificates framed so I could display them outside my room at the Windmill Medical Centre. I treasure these opportunities for continued care and am humbled that these young men and women chose to return to see me. Even as I work toward my Nutritional and Environmental Medicine Goals, I will continue to allocate appointments to regular, everyday General Practice, including "on the day" appointments for urgent matters, accessed via reception.

07.01.2022 Pros and cons to using the Pill. A wonderful invention for women to control their fertility, but there are things to consider.

06.01.2022 Dr John Hall pleads with Australians to stay home this Easter. He says rural hospitals have limited resources and says people "could die" waiting to be moved to an ICU in the city.

04.01.2022 A colleague has written 27 points about Coronavirus. I would add: 28: keep your lungs healthy. Be a non smoker, eat nutritious food, keep on top of asthma or other chronic lung disease, prioritise sleep. 29: because it is so important....... keep your germs to yourself.

03.01.2022 Inflammation underlies so many of our health challenges..including things like endometriosis, diabetes and obesity which can be a concern for my pregnant (or soon to be pregnant) mums. Here is a reminder of where the science sits with inflammation. There is so much we can do to help ourselves. A bit of weekend reading for you!

03.01.2022 The Gladstone GP Superclinic has now received all of our flu vaccinations. We have bulk billed flu clinics available for bookings. Please be mindful that flu va...ccinations are high in demand, especially this year, so please ring the surgery on 4978 7868 to secure your booking, while stock lasts. Thank you See more

02.01.2022 Do your bit to reduce the chance of another outbreak. These things continue to be important. When out and about, and as you return home: Wash your hands. Avoid touching your face.... Stay 2m away from people who are not in your bubble. You’ll see at the Superclinic, we have things in place to protect you and our staff: Perspex screens at reception, telephone checks to make sure you are well on the day of your appointment, with Tele-medicine options and clinic review if required in a special room if you’re not. Staff have their temperature taken daily. Social distancing in the waiting rooms. In my consulting room, I am washing my hands, sanitising medical equipment, patient seats and door handles during and between consultations, and wearing my mask, glasses, cap and gown. A proportion of my consultations are via Telehealth. Am I over it? Absolutely! The mask, especially, is uncomfortable, and all the extra washing and cleaning disturbs my workflow. But I would rather do this than have a patient harmed by COVID on my watch. Stay Safe Dr Barb.

01.01.2022 A beautiful story for our little and not so little ones. I have been so impressed by the children who have visited my room recently. They have done as their mums have asked, and stayed in their seats.
