16.01.2022 Mud crabs are one of Gladstone Harbour’s iconic species Mud crabs spend most of their adult lives in burrows in estuarine mangrove habitats. Their abundance, size distribution and health are related to environmental conditions and fishing pressures within these habitats. The 2020 Gladstone Harbour Report Card will be the forth year that mud crab indicators have been included in the report card.

13.01.2022 Fish Health is measured in two separate projects: 1. Fish Health Assessment Index 2. Visual Fish Condition... The first project provides a thorough assessment of internal and external measures of fish health. The second project uses a mobile phone app to capture an image of the fish, for assessment with an object detection algorithm, a visual assessment and length and weight is also recorded by the angler. 11.01.2022 Fish are one of the most important social, economic and ecological resources in Gladstone Harbour. Recreational fishing in Gladstone occurs throughout the harbour and is both boat and shore-based. Fishing, particularly for barramundi, also occurs in nearby Lake Awoonga which is regularly stocked by Gladstone Area Water Board. In 2019 the value of recreational fishing in Gladstone was estimated at nearly 27 million dollars. Commercial fishing in Gladstone includes net, pot, l...ine and trawl fishing. 06.01.2022 Now that’s an expensive fishing trip Poaching in the Marine Park undermines the health of the Reef. Our patrols are out in force these holidays in the air ...and on the water. Anyone caught fishing in a green zone will receive a $2220 fine. Access the zoning rules before you hit the water by downloading the free Eye on the Reef app. It pinpoints your on-water location, identifies which zone you’re in and advises what activities are allowed there even when you’re outside of mobile range. 03.01.2022 Stay harbour wise this festive season by keeping our harbour safe and clean! Use environmentally friendly sunscreen and skin products before entering the water. Ensure you take all your rubbish home when spending the day by the water. Even the smallest piece of plastic can cause harm to our marine friends. Pack reusable picnicware instead of disposable plastic plates and cups - and lets ditch the straws!!... Make sure you are up to date with all fishing requirements and catch limits. And keep an eye out for our friendly turtles - it is nesting season after all. Enjoy a safe and healthy holiday season
