22.01.2022 Fledgling Magpie Season If you see me on the ground, hold tight, my parents are likely to be somewhere around! They may be out collecting my food or cha...sing away predators that are likely to intrude. Please give them time, and wait and see, they're extremely likely to return to me. As my legs wobble, I clumsily plummet to the ground. I’m just learning my bearings of how to get around. An exciting new world for me to see. Out of the nest and free as can be! Although I may not yet be able to fly, please don’t worry as I’m bound to get by. I can usually flutter and jump to higher ground. I can also communicate with my parents by emitting a sound. If you see me in immediate danger, please help and don’t be a stranger! If I’m injured, I need your assistance. Call your local animal rescue shelter to help secure my existence! Please don’t be tempted to take me home, and try to raise me on your own. I require experienced care, and a nutritious diet like my parents would prepare! I know you mean well, and truly thank you for caring. But when it comes to raising me, even my own parents can find it overbearing! If I’m too young and unable to be returned to my nest, (refer to flowchart) here’s something you can try to ensure I progress... Constructing a makeshift nest is easy as can be. Octopus straps, a hanging basket, leaf litter, then securely hang it up in a tree! Make sure you wait until my mum or dad return. If you see a parent attending to me, then there is no reason for further concern. If you’re EVER in doubt, do not fuss. Ring your local wildlife shelter and they’ll be able to help us! Follow this flowchart and learn what to do if you find a baby magpie here https://www.facebook.com//pcb.243338437/2433382186755919/

22.01.2022 We are excited for Ecofest 2021 with some new activities from our team and animals to meet.

22.01.2022 This precious little one Loves her log and Is becoming more and more independent every day. Brushtail possums are a common species in the Gladstone region and they rely on nesting hollows for their homes although a nice roof cavity with a view of Netflix will do when they don't have tree hollows to call home. Thank you to Here for Gladstone Rio Tinto Yarwyn, Wildspot Fauna Services Belinda Piper and the wonderful team at CPL Gladstone for these gorgeous homes for our wild ba...bies. If you would like a hollow log to turn into a wild home we have many available. #habitsforhabitat #gladstone #wildlife

20.01.2022 It is looking like it will be a busy season for wildlife carers. If you are able to help with rescues and care of wildlife we would love to hear from you. We need rescue responders for our busy times for collection and transport of animals as we sometimes cannot immediately get to a rescue due to family and work commitments. Your membership includes insurance coverage, coverage under our associations rehabilation permit, access to our training resources and our careline. #sponsor#donate#volunteer#gladstoneregion #wildlife

20.01.2022 As we into warmer weather that means snake season! #Snakes play an important role in maintaining the natural environment. Along with other #reptiles, th...ey make up a significant proportion of the middle-order predators that keep natural ecosystems working. Snakes usually prefer to retreat when encountered, but if they feel threatened, they can become defensive. Most snake bites are received by people who try to capture or kill a snake. If you encounter a snake, don't panic. Back away to a safe distance and allow the snake to move away. Snakes often want to escape when disturbed and when left alone, they present little or no danger to people. Snakes are protected under the Nature Conservation Act 1992 and it is an offence to kill, injure or take snakes from the wild. If you do encounter a snake in, or around your home you can call a licensed snake catcher. For more information http://ow.ly/zRsP50wLkje | #qldenvironment

13.01.2022 If you are out-and-about this weekend driving on the beach please be aware that hatchlings are starting to emerge from their nests A resident noticed a nes...t of hatchlings at #DoubleIslandPoint yesterday morning, and alerted oncoming 4WDs so the hatchlings could make their way safely to the ocean. Drivers should also be aware that taking their vehicle above the high tide mark or into dunes increases the risk of driving over turtle nests, compacting nests and causing erosion leading to loss of eggs. #qldenvironment

Continuation of our Habits for Habitat education program with a new website coming with some very cool activites and eduational materials. Thank you to our program sponsors RioTino and QAL. We have been able to support our carers with over $5000 worth of donated supplies and medical expenditure. We gave purchased new flight aviaries and delivered online training, we have also provided the secretariat service for the Australian Wildlife rehabilitation conference and administrative support to the Queensland Wildlfie Rehabilitation council in developing a state standard of essential animal husbandry information. And we have worked with the amazing team at CPL Gladstone creating homes for our wildlife. And more importantly in the 2020 calendar year so far we have responded to over 775 calls this year so far and our busiest season upon us now. Image by Jasmine Z...elený Central Greater Glider ( Petauroides armillatus ). Image by Matt Wright Faunagraphic Southern Greater Glider ( Petauroides volans ). Image by Josh Bowell Widely agreed for years that the 3 are separate species, recent genetic research has confirmed just this! It is now more important than ever that we work towards protecting vital habitat for these large and rarely seen gliders.

06.01.2022 It is with great sadness that we advise our little owl has passed away through the early hours of this morning. She had an incredible journey coming from Central Western Queensland to us for care, where she was found kicked out of her nest. As carers we face incredible odds rehabilitating wildlife. Trauma from road accidents, injury and disease, are enormous challenges and often hard to diagnose. But we do try 100% each time to give each animal we rescue the best chance of r...eturning healthy to their homes. We are blessed by an amazing care team who gave her the best chance from the moment she was rescued, and we are so grateful for our care community for the support they have shown in our appeal to support her care. To those who have donated to us thank you, please contact our administration so we can arrange a refund if you would like. Or we can help some of the other animals we have in care with your generosity. Fly for ever little one.

06.01.2022 Puddles the Platypus (see photo) will debut this year just in time for this egg-laying mammal to claim her place as the rightful Aussie replacement for that fer...al impostor, the Easter Bunny. Created by renowned Melbourne-based confectioner Chocolatier Australia, Puddles is available from various major retail outlets, including Coles supermarkets, in the lead-up to Easter. Puddles will then become a standard item in the Chocolatier range (see www.chocolatier.com.au) with 25% of profits to be devoted to platypus conservation. Our special thanks to Chocolatier and the many others who continue to support the work of the Australian Platypus Conservancy. See more

05.01.2022 When it comes to your safety this #magpie breeding season don’t it. Magpies are protective parents, so remember to protect yourself. It might be tempting t...o run when a magpie attacks, but this can further aggravate them. time you are in a magpie area or encounter a swooping magpie remember to: Wear a broad-brimmed hat and sunglasses or shelter under an umbrella to protect your face. Painting or sticking large ‘eyes’ on the back of your hat can also deter magpiesbut this won’t work for cyclists. If possible, pedestrians and cyclists should try taking a different route until the magpie chicks have left the nest and the swooping ceases. Magpies are a protected species in #Queensland and any interference with the birds or unpermitted relocation of a magpie is prohibited. Breeding season runs from about July to December, with most of the swooping occurring between September and November. More information on living with magpies is available at http://ow.ly/VK6e50vkShJ | #qldenvironment
