24.01.2022 Trawling through the archives and stumbled across this Q&A with Nick from last year by the UK's Vinorium. It's a neat little read for the weekend but be warned, he comes across a bit of a name dropper!
22.01.2022 An interesting year to be in the wine/hospitality game, but is there anything better than a full dam to make everything seem rosy? We bought our Tea Tree site in the Coal Valley in 2017 (planted the vineyard in 2018) and we’ve never seen the dams this full.
21.01.2022 Riesling at night, winemaker’s delight. #vintage2021 #derwentvalley #hobart #urbanwinery #tasmania
20.01.2022 Vintage 2021, day 2 (featuring a cameo by the Easter llama). Two fermenters full of delicious Coal River Valley pinot noir. These gorgeous berries were picked over the Easter weekend and have lovely ripe tannins, so we’ll let them ferment on skins for up to four weeks before pressing.
19.01.2022 Tonight, Nick’s doing a virtual wine tasting with Taiwanese trade as part of the Tasmanian Wine Tasting Taipei. But all he seems to be talking about is stinky tofu.
18.01.2022 It's not a sales pitch, it's a community service announcement! Doesn't matter what you're ordering, best get in quick because official freight delay announcements are coming in thick and fast. Plus, this year, we all deserve a little extra spoiling. (NOW comes the sales pitch...- https://www.gdfwinemakers.com/shop)
17.01.2022 Nick worked vintages in France and Germany in his early winemaking days. Nowadays, the next generation of those European winemakers travel to Tasmania to do vintage with Nick. Not sure French brothers Leon & Felix quite expected this when the boss decided to take them out for lunch! @ Bunnings Warehouse Australia
17.01.2022 Daydreaming about the 2016 Reveur? Sounds like The Wine Advocate was - 'dark, lifted aromas of plums, old-school maraschino cherries and mixed spices. These characters intensify on the supple and fleshy palate, firmed by velvet tannins and a fine, balanced finish - 94pts.' Available online https://www.gdfwinemakers.com/shop/reveur-pinot-noir
17.01.2022 Foggy wonderland in the Derwent Valley this morning visiting our wonderful pinot and shiraz growers. It will be at least another few weeks until the shiraz is picked. That could be a good omen ... the fruit for the 2010 Mon Père, which went on to win the Jimmy Watson trophy, was picked in mid-May.
17.01.2022 How’s this for a Mother’s Day plan? Picnic lunch, Tasmanian cheese and a cult wine like our 2019 Überblanc Riesling ($26). Better still, bring your mum to the Glaetzer-Dixon urban winery for a tasting on May 9 (book ahead on 0417852287) or buy her a 6-pack ($156) with free delivery to anywhere in Australia www.gdfwinemakers.com
15.01.2022 When Nick launched his Shiraz in 2008, he named it Mon Père as an ode to his dad, Barossa winemaker Colin Glaetzer. Although best known for his full-bodied Barossa reds, Colin developed a love of French wines while working in the UK wine trade in the 1970s. Growing up in the Barossa Valley, Nick and his brothers were introduced to the wines of Hermitage, the ancestral home of Shiraz, by Colin and his wife Judith. Nick was instantly hooked. #GlaetzerDixon
15.01.2022 There are a handful of urban wineries in the New World, but in the old winegrowing regions of Europe, it is not uncommon for the winery to be in the village centre, or for small producers to make wine in their backyards for friends and family. Here at Glaetzer-Dixon, the urban winery means a highly-organised, compact operation turning out great wines from a very small footprint. Our tasting room is in the winery, and we live upstairs, which is handy during vintage (except when the kids are sleeping!).
14.01.2022 Whatever you think you’re about to do, buddy...! #glaetzerdixon #tassiewine and for the #twitchers, it’s Tassie’s endemic Black Currawong
13.01.2022 Flashback to 2011 when The Advertiser labelled Nick "Barossa's black sheep" and his Tasmanian shiraz upset the entire Australian wine industry by taking out the country's biggest wine prize ... Next year it will be 10 years since Glaetzer-Dixon's 2010 Mon Père Shiraz took out the Jimmy Watson at the @RASofVIC's Royal Melbourne Wine Awards. This coveted trophy is awarded to the country’s best 1 or 2 y.o. red wine. Nick committed a small portion of the vintage to magnums (which have aged beautifully!). We’ll be doing a very limited anniversary release of 2010 Mon Père Shiraz in 2021, with the first rights to purchase going to our Press Club members. Take out a Club subscription before 30 September and you’ll also go into the draw to win a bottle of La Judith Pinot Noir (RRP $220). Bring on 2021, for so many reasons!
13.01.2022 Abstract art, or just another job in the winery waiting to be finished? #GlaetzerDixon
11.01.2022 This year, Gourmet Traveller WINE named us 'Best Tasting Experience' in southern Tasmania. Given that border closures mean only 2.3% of Australia is eligible to visit us, you will have to take their word for it. For now.
10.01.2022 Aren't you curious as to why a 5th generation vigneron from the Barossa would upsticks and move to Tasmania, convert an old ice factory in the Hobart CBD into an urban winery, take out the prestigious Jimmy Watson Trophy with a Tasmanian Shiraz before Tasmania even knew it was growing Shiraz, add Gourmet Traveller's Young Winemaker of the Year trophy to the cabinet, and then be named in The Future 50 influencers of the GLOBAL drinks industry in 2019? Don't be left wondering. Secure your Press Club subscription now - your wine selection, special Club prices, exclusive offers, free delivery, every 4 months https://www.gdfwinemakers.com/club
10.01.2022 OK, your turn! We've sent out quite a few of our new release 6-packs (2 each of Avance Pinot Noir, Nouveau Shiraz and Nouveau Pinot for $150 delivered). So what do you think? We'd love to see your wine reviews in the comments below, and we've got a bottle of 2017 Mon Pere Shiraz for the most... thoughtful. Tell us your thoughts within the next week to be in the running.
09.01.2022 Bucolic vineyard vistas, fancy restaurants, rustic wine barrels? Dime-a-dozen. What if it was about the wine, instead of the circus around the wine? You, the winemaker and the glimmer of Riedel, with a dash of red, cast against a custom light bench? The black walls only serve to narrow your focus further. No distractions, nowhere to hide, just a wine wanting to impress you. We're ready when you are, and we don't talk like this in person. Promise. Tastings, done right, 7 days. Call Nick to book.
09.01.2022 We've seen quite a few visitors from the big island making their way back to the cellar door in the past few weeks. It has been great to share a few stories! If you're visiting from interstate, one of the easiest ways to sample the local wine offering is to join a tour like this group from Ageing Barrel Tours. There's no better tasting surface than our bespoke light bench!
08.01.2022 Where would we be without the incredible venues that support our wines and the Tassie wine industry more generally?? Huge shout out to @suzielucks_ and others who have made a decision to source only from local producers and distributors. Thank you, you bloody legends, for helping us through this year of weirdness and also to the food and wine lovers who are getting out there to show their support - it makes the effort worthwhile! #tasmanianwine #tasmanianfood #tasmanianbusiness #coolclimatewines @winetasmania
08.01.2022 The perfect dish for Spring!
07.01.2022 If you've got 5 minutes to spare, our September newsletter might just do the trick!
07.01.2022 Pop in to @commodorecellars this Saturday for a tasting with Santuario Wines, La Vie en Rose Wines, and Glaetzer-Dixon Family Winemakers for a chance to try the...ir Malbec, Rose and more! There will also be a special discount during the tasting... you can find them below us on Blues Point Road! #santuariowines #glaetzerdixon #rose #glaetzerdixonfamilywinemakers #winetastingsydney #winetasting #commodorehotel #mcmahonspoint #northsydney #northsydneyeats #commodorecellars See more
06.01.2022 Punching down the ferments - or Pigéage - is only part of the gruelling physical regime executed by small winemakers during vintage. Whilst larger operators can mechanise the process or delegate to a team of vintage casuals, Nick is hands-on every step of the way in our small urban winery. Perhaps some of our Press Club Members can be coaxed into lending a hand come next March!
06.01.2022 That feeling when you get home from work on Friday to find a) your wine on the doorstep and b) the fire basket full ready for the perfect evening!
04.01.2022 We feared people would be put off by our appointment only system for wine tastings, but it’s been a revelation. Customers seem to love the certainty that comes with booking and the personalised service when they’re in the tasting room. And, for a tiny business like ours, it allows Nick to connect directly with his customers in a way that wasn’t possible before. Huge thanks to @gtwinemag and @winsordobbin for naming @glaetzer_dixon the best tasting experience in southern Tasmania. Read the full story at http://gourmettravellerwine.com and please give us a call on 0417852287 if you’d like to pop by for a tasting! #gtwine @winetasmania
04.01.2022 It’s been quiet in the cellar door so we thought we’d take a quick break, but of course we’ve had a bunch of calls for tasting appointments. Sorry everyone! We’ll be open all next weekend and weekdays by appointment #skyvingoff #wildernesstherapy #tasmaniantourism #supportlocal @winetasmania
03.01.2022 Free wine tastings in Hobart 7 days/week - just call Nick to make a time 0417 852 287! Walking distance from the CBD (almost directly across the Brooker from Officeworks) - could be a neat Friday afternoon team building activity, without the annoying butchers paper and naff icebreaker exercises.
03.01.2022 Just 3 days to go before we choose a Press Club Member at random to receive a complimentary bottle of La Judith Pinot Noir valued at $220. If you've been giving the Club some thought, get your subscription now! Your choice of 6 or 12 wines delivered every 4 months with discounts on cellar door prices and free freight. Sorted! https://www.gdfwinemakers.com/club
02.01.2022 Great long weekend away visiting some Tassie icons. Sure our friends embarrassed us by insisting on posing our bottles everywhere, but they emptied enough of them that we're willing to cut them a little slack! Plus, SNOW! #GlaetzerDixon
01.01.2022 There’s a winery WHERE on the Brooker?! If we were a shark, we’d bite you, Hobart!
01.01.2022 Easter break? No such thing for those of us in the Tassie wine industry. If you pop by for a tasting or to pick up some wine this weekend you are likely to catch some of the action as the first grapes of the 2021 vintage are due to arrive at the Glaetzer-Dixon urban winery in Hobart. Open by appointment only (last minute bookings welcome) on 0417852287. www.gdfwinemakers.com
