22.01.2022 Im devastated to find out that one of our most intense/critically ill patients from last week lost his battle over the weekend. Another young, beautiful doggo ...lost to cycad toxicity. These plants are killers! Every part of the tree is extremely toxic to dogs and I personally believe that they should come with huge warning tags or not be sold at all. Ingestion results in liver failure and it happens very quickly. Even under specialist Veterinary care, the mortality rate on cycad toxicity patients is extremely high. Please, please, PLEASE dont have these in your garden if you have dogs! Let your friends and family know and be sure to share this with as many people as you can. Im so sorry that we lost the fight little guy. You were an absolute legend EDIT: top left image is actually a Date Palm (not a cycad). Sorry for the confusion! Cycads are also known as Sago Palms but are not actually a species of palm. Please check if youre concerned/unsure. UPDATE: just had a 3rd cycad patient admitted to our ICU in the space of 3 weeks. Sadly, its quite common for pets to chew on/ingest plants.... this post is simply to create awareness on just how incredibly toxic this particular plant is. Your dog may stay away from plants (and thats fantastic) but please share the info to help save those who dont. See more

18.01.2022 How wonderful...I dreamed of doing this as a child...

18.01.2022 Winston spent 19 years with his family, the only family he had ever known. Then one day, his old and frail body started to fail him. He had developed renal fail...ure and arthritis and it became harder for him to make it to the litter box. After a few accidents in the home, he found himself at BARCS Animal Shelter. He was lost and confused, unsure why he was in a lonely cage instead of in the home he had known his whole life. I take many of BARCS hardest cases, and when I saw their plea for help with this old man, of course I said yes. Unfortunately, not many people are prepared for the hard work and heartbreak that comes with rescuing senior pets. But I knew I could change Winstons life, so I did. This old boy spent about a week in my care before his new person sent in an adoption application. I had casually posted him on my personal page, and the power of sharing led him to his new mom. She came to pick him up today, and just sent me this photo of him settling in at home. Every cat loves a good box, no matter how old. She spent time today combing the mats out of his fur, feeding him treats, and promising to love him for whatever time he has left. I share this story to educate that senior pets are wanted. They are adoptable. And they are worthy of rescue, of adoption, of living out their days in comfort and peace. It can be expensive. It can be heartbreaking. But loving a senior will be the most rewarding thing youll ever do. Most people arent willing to take a chance on a cat as old as 19. Its too sad for them. But whats sadder, Winston dying alone in a shelter or spending months and months waiting in a cage, or Winston spending the rest of his life in a cozy home and passing peacefully in the arms of someone who loves him when his time comes? Take a chance on a senior like Winston. You wont regret it.
