17.01.2022 Glasgow 300 Saturday Quiz! Question: John and Edith, a couple in their 70s are looking to move into a smaller home with their Grandson Michael.... The health of John and his wife has not been good. John has had a pacemaker fitted for a weakening heart and Edith has recently been diagnosed with breast cancer. Michael, having just been offered a place at a local university to study IT will have a spare bedroom to help financially and bring a sense of security for his aging Grandparents. The three-bedroom home is only a few years old and beautifully presented and maintained. The inspection by the Glasgow team found no structural, timber pest or compliance issues. As part of the Glasgow inspection routine however it was found the health and well-being of all three was at risk without considering two important issues. Look at the picture below; it is a common layout of an Australian home, see if you know what the issues are? They can be remedied for little or no cost and help protect the lives of all three. The reasons may surprise you. Answers: Whilst the home meets all current compliance requirements some adjustments should be made when considering the welfare of the residents. 1. Though not yet mandatory legislation will soon be introduced that advises the installation of additional smoke alarms within bedrooms. This is due to the many fires started by electrical chargers and equipment within bedrooms where smoke fills an enclosed room at night before the external smoke alarms are activated. Battery smoke alarms can be installed for under $20ea or at a minimum a bedroom door should left open slightly at night. 2. The location of the meter box and switchboard on the bedroom wall, particularly of an elderly couple with health issues can cause concern due the electromagnetic field generated from the power connection and meters. Electromagnetic radiation accumulates within the body and the amount of exposure during any 24hr period is important. Although still being thoroughly researched by scientists, sufficient evidence now shows that it can affect one’s health where excessive. Depression, nausea, headaches are just a few noted effects. It has also been known to affect pacemakers through electrical interference and lessen or render ineffective drugs used to treat breast cancer in some patients. Simply moving the bed to another location within the room can avoid any complications and reduce any risk. In such circumstances the Glasgow team use testing equipment calibrated to the World Health Organisation’s recommendation to detect EMFs.
