24.01.2022 You’re not doing the whole thing, are you? the lady said to me, as she and her walking companion passed me by at the start of the Somerset Trail. It was 2:30...pm in the afternoon, and she was evidently concerned that I’d be stuck out in the bush after dark. There were signs at the start of the trail that warned similar sentiments. It’s ok, I have a torch! I replied, not that it much changed her surprised expression. Later, however, I started to worry too. I was walking a 13 kilometre loop with a lookout roughly halfway along, but it was gone four o’clock and I hadn’t reached the lookout yet. I’d only seen one other walker in the past couple of hours, and as the shadows grew longer all around me, I started to feel very alone. But there, up ahead! A break in the treeline! That must be the lookout, I thought, and I emerged from the forest to take in a magnificent view. With a distractingly gorgeous sight in front of me and some music in my earphones, my anxieties calmed down, and I sat still to eat some food and enjoy myself for twenty minutes. Afterwards as I left the lookout to finish the last six kilometres of trail that lay ahead of me, I pondered on the anxiety that had come and gone. It was like I had let other people’s fear and worry creep into my own mind. I love the bush at night! I love the creepy-crawlies, the peace and quiet, the sensation of a soft evening breeze on my skin. I had my torch, and a back-up light source in case that failed. I had plenty of water. The track was well marked. I had let the friends that I live with know my whereabouts and the time I planned to return by. I had made sure I wasn’t parked in an area that gets locked at night. I was fine! And so, with my anxiety gone, my walking pace slowed down. I watched each step carefully and paused at each animal sound or eye-twinkle in my torch light. And I saw some wonderful things! My favourite would have to be the fawn-footed melomys (Melomys cervinipes) that ran above my head through a tangle of climbers that formed an archway over the path. It was my first sighting of one, and it was larger that I expected, but very beautiful. I returned to my car safe and sound, and drove home through the eucalypt forests and farmlands under a huge full moon. It had been a lovely night!

21.01.2022 THE START OF THE JIMNA GOLD RUSH???:- The Queenslander Sat 23 Jan 1869 JIMNA. THE silent monarchs stood around The palm and creeping vine;... And pretty flowers on the ground Around each other twine. The morn it cormes, and in the trees The merry birds do sing ; And up aloft the gentle breeze A pleasant harmony doth bring. All is smiling fresh and fair Upon this happy morn ; No sound is there upon the air, Or on the breeze is borne. But hark! what rustling noise is that Upon the distant hill; Two men drew near, and down they sat Close by a rippling rill. Their faces wan, for tired were they, And on their backs they bore A heavy swag, and all that day They had walked with feet sore. They came from distant mines to seek Prospectors both were they, And they had searched for many a week; No luck yet cheered their way. They cleared the scrub, and sank a hole, A humpy soon was seen; Their fire grew bright, and upward stole The smoke amid the green. Says Bill to Jack, " It's getting deep, And spell you've had enough; I'll fix a whip upon the heap You try a dish of stuff." For on to boulders they had got; Jack said unto his mate, " I am sure this is a golden spot- Here's half a pennyweight" The bottom now they quickly found 'Twas a sort of slate ; The wash of sand and quartz so round, They took two ounces weight. "Oh glad I am," says Jack to Bill, " We found this lucky bend; And soon I hope a bag we'll fill, Our darling wives to send." And swiftly spread the news afar, A rush right soon took place; From Ballarat to Gympie bar Commenced a diggers' chase. To find the yellow gold they came, A motley crowd to view; From overland and over main, They were a jolly crew. And soon the ground they turned o'er, And all a little got; And full two hundred pounds or more Was Jack and William's lot. " We have not made our fortunes, Bill, But this I have to say, We'll tramp to-morrow up the hill, To Brisbane take our way. " And there a farm on Brisbane's braes We have enough to buy; With chicks and wives 'mid happy scenes, We'll pass our time away. " Content and fortune let's hope 'twill bring, Thus never more to roam ; Our wives and children then will sing, This is a happy home." J.T.C. See more

11.01.2022 2020 is now behind us and in the current COVID-19 environment we are able to hold bushwalks and meetings again. It is therefore planned to have an AGM and General meeting in February to discuss club activities and get us back on track. The COVID-19 requirements will be discussed as a priority and a Walk Calendar for 2021 put together. In order to ensure a proper meeting is conducted there are a couple of options: 1. Have just the AGM/General at a member's house.... 2. Have a walk first and then the AGM/Meeting at a park or other venue. Usually, the club meets at Matthew Flinders Park, Glass House Mountains for outdoor meetings. Please go to facebook group https://www.facebook.com/groups/glasshousebw to indicate your preference.

09.01.2022 Upper Caboolture | Submission Anybody know these couple of the delights. My granddaughters were riding horses in sheep station Creek (Phelps rd entrance) & hub...by heard motorbikes &went to try & stop them. They wouldn’t listen when asked them not to ride because they might scare the horses & young kids were riding. The young guy got irate when hubby was taking pics of them & was punching hubby while his GF hit him in the head several times with her helmet. Update: The following information has been issued in respond to the claims made by the other party involved. The truth of the story is they where riding there bikes in sheeps station, where stopped on a bench he came down, away from his horses and where his grand kids are, told them to fuck off from near where he was with his grandkids and started taking pictures of the 2 younger bike riders to report them, one of the riders tried to snatch the phone and then the older man retaliated and put him in a head lock, so the younger rider has stood up for him self in self deference, the older man also attacked the younger girl who was trying to break it up and then escalated from there. the older gentlemen had fallen over and hit his face on the gravel. Police have been have been contacted for comment. We will update once we have that information to follow up. #6NEWS | fb.com/6newscomau

You may be able to see some from the Thilba Thalba Viewpoint. Many other spring flowers are alse in flower. there is a tiny bootlace orchid struggling to survive just the TT side of the TT LO. It was not flowering that we could see on Tuesday. (But there was one just budding on English Break today)
