21.01.2022 GLaWAC has been working hard to fill in details of the cultural story of the Mitchell River National Park with findings recently published in Australia’s leading archaeology journal - Australian Archaeology. The long term study, in partnership with the Monash University Indigenous Centre Studies and the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Australian Biodiversity and Heritage (CABAH), reveals that cultural deposits ranging from before the last Ice Age to very ...recent times are present in rock shelters within the Park. Excavated remnants provide an insight into what the landscape used to look like with evidence of an array of locally extinct mammals found, including the Tasmanian pademelon and the Long-tailed mouse, which are both now confined to Tasmania. This information will help to tell the story, and the significance, of Gunaikurnai Country both for GLaWAC and the broader community. 05.01.2022 WATER FOR GUNAIKURNAI COUNTRY Did you hear the news? GLaWAC, on behalf of our members, will receive two gigalitres of unallocated water in the Mitchell River. We see this as an enormous first step to achieving the water objectives of the Gunaikurnai, and we thank the Victorian Government who we have been working closely with since it released the ‘Water for Victoria’ policy. Securing water rights for the Gunaikurnai puts the ‘Water’ into our Land and Waters Aboriginal Corporation for the first time, and we thank all our partners in Government and the local community for their support.
