25.01.2022 NAIDOC Week is just around the corner and it's a time to reflect on how we can create a better future for all Australians. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander... people, their cultures and their languages are what make Australia unique and it's fair and practical that their voices are heard when it comes to making policies about them. A Voice to Parliament will ensure they have a say and will lead to positive change that will have a real impact on the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. 25.01.2022 "Every child deserves a champion, an adult who will never give up on them. Is this job tough? You betcha. But it is not impossible. We're educators. We're born to make a difference." Watch Rita Pierson's full TED Talk here: http://t.ted.com/YxdAyD3

25.01.2022 Anti-sexist educator and activist Jackson Katz wants people to look at: that whole range of issues that are referred to in shorthand as gender violence issues... in a new way: they’ve been seen as women’s issues that some good men help out with, but I have a problem with that frame and I don’t accept it. Instead, he says in his excellent TED talk, I’m going to argue that these are men’s issues first and foremost. He argues that calling gender violence a women’s issue is part of the problem. Katz uses an analysis by feminist linguist Julia Penelope to show how changing the description changes the tone of the discussion: Start with ‘John beat Mary’.... the second sentence says the same thing in a passive voice, ‘Mary was beaten by John,’ and now a whole lot has happened in one sentence... We’ve shifted our focus in one sentence from John to Mary. And when the focus shifts further, you get ‘Mary was beaten’, and now it’s all about Mary; we’re not even thinking about John... and the final sentence in the sequence, flowing from the others, is ‘Mary is a battered woman’... [and] John has long ago left the conversation. Katz, who is the creator of Mentors in Violence Prevention, a leadership program focused on preventing all forms of men’s violence against women, says, those of us who work in the domestic and sexual violence field know that victim blaming is pervasive in this realm... but in terms of preventing violence, we have to ask a different set of questions... like why does John beat Mary, why is domestic violence still a big problem in the United States and all over the world. Once we’re thinking in this way, then we can ask about... how can we do something differently, how can we change the practices, how can we change the socialization of boys and the definitions of manhood that lead to these current outcomes. Katz asserts that there are powerful roles that men can play in this work" and he calls on his fellow men to put aside the notion of a gender war and stand side-by-side with women: We live in the world together... [we need] to get people to speak up and to create a peer culture where the abusive behavior will be unacceptable not because it’s illegal, but because it’s wrong and unacceptable in the peer culture. He says, there’s been an awful lot of silence in male culture about this ongoing tragedy... we need to break that silence, and we need more men to do that. And so Katz concludes, I hope that, going forward, men and women working together can begin the change and the transformation that will happen so that future generations won’t have the level of tragedy that we deal with on a daily basis... I know we can do it. We can do better. 24.01.2022 CONSENT IS NOT A MILKSHAKE! THERE ARE NO SHIFTING LINES! I was absolutely thrilled to be invited to collaborate with the creatives at The Royals to make this vi...deo, Consent Is A Conversation! They share my view that consent is an ongoing conversation, and that understanding it like this is the key to understanding consent itself. We filmed this yesterday morning and the creative team stayed up all night editing it. Everyone involved in this project worked for free, because we think this is so important. Consent isn’t actually a confusing concept, no matter how many people want to pretend it is. It’s not about milkshakes or shifting lines and it’s definitely not something that people should feel baffled by - at its core, consent is about respect. Respect for other people, respect for mutual pleasure and respect for boundaries. Sex is not a prize to be won or manipulated out of somebody. Just like any good conversation, it’s a mutual exchange - it involves asking questions and listening to the responses. We don’t think you can provide a definitive guide to consent in 2 and a half minutes. But you *can* invite people to understand that consent and sex as a conversation. We want people to watch and share this video with the intent of starting that conversation, and continuing it wherever and whenever you engage in sex with other people. The best conversations are the ones where everyone gets to walk away and feel like they’ve been respected and heard. Sex is no different! Start those conversations today - with your kids, with your friends, with your family and most importantly with your sexual partners. As Jaclyn Friedman once wrote, sex is something that should make all people feel more human by the end of it - not less. If you’re still confused, just ASK what people want and LISTEN to their answers. If you’re not hearing an enthusiastic yes, it’s a no. #theconsentconvo

24.01.2022 After becoming President, I asked some of my bodyguard members to go for a walk in town. After the walk, we went for lunch at a restaurant. We sat in one of the... most central ones, and each of us asked what we wanted. After a bit of waiting, the waiter who brought our menus appeared, at that moment I realized that at the table that was right in front of ours there was a single man waiting to be served. When he was served, I told one of my soldiers: go ask that man to join us. The soldier went and transmitted my invitation. The man stood up, took the plate and sat next to me. While eating, his hands were constantly shaking and he didn't lift his head from the food. When we finished, he waved at me without even looking at me, I shook his hand and walked away! Soldier said to me: - Madiba, that man must be very sick as his hands wouldn't stop shaking while he was eating. Not at all! The reason for his tremor is another - I replied. They looked at me weird and said to them: - That man was the guardian of the jail I was locked up in. Often, after the torture I was subjected to, I screamed and cried for water and he came to humiliate me, he laughed at me and instead of giving me water he urinated on my head. He wasn't sick, he was scared and shook maybe fearing that I, now that I'm president of South Africa, would send him to jail and do the same thing he did with me, torturing and humiliating him. But that's not me, that behavior is not part of my character nor my ethics.
