24.01.2022 At 7:51pm tonight, new laws to fast track children from foster care into forced adoptions passed the NSW Parliament. This was the last item of business for this... Government before the election in March. As the Bill passed, you could hear loud jokes from Liberal members about wanting to hurry up so we can get out of here and enjoy Christmas - a luxury that won’t be afforded to thousands of foster kids who will miss Christmas with their families, facing down the new threat of adoption. The Bill was introduced without warning two weeks ago. These laws are horrific and represent a major intensification of the large scale contemporary theft of Aboriginal children from their families. NSW has always led the way in this nation wide disgrace. Many other poor and marginalised communities will be affected. But a fantastic coalition has emerged in these last two weeks. A real united front of Labor and Greens politicians, Aboriginal organisations and activists, trade unions, legal centres, NGOs and many others. Some Labor and Greens politicians fought very hard in parliament, particularly David Shoebridge and Labor Shadow Minister Tania Mihailuk who made a marathon 5+ hour speech long into Tuesday night, essentially a sit-in to test how badly the Liberals wanted this. There were similar efforts all through today moving a long list of amendments prepared by the Community Legal Centres who have been tireless in their advocacy. This coalition needs to grow and deepen. These laws are just the tip of the iceberg showing the racism and cruelty of the child removal system. We need to fight every adoption, fight to drive the Liberals out of power, hold Labor to their commitments to repeal these laws. We can push on for far more fundamental transformation to bring children home, ensure all struggling families get the support they need, and put Aboriginal people in control of their own children and community affairs.
