01.01.2022 To celebrate NAIDOC Week 2020 Gleebooks is delighted to present two artworks by Brisbane-based Kamilaroi artist Archie Moore in the window of our store at 49 Glebe Point Road. Described by the artist as ‘false flags’, these works are part of the original 14 prototypes commissioned by the University of Queensland in 2014 which Moore later developed into the larger scale installation of 28 flags, United Neytions. Moore created the flag designs in response to lay-anthropologis...t RH Mathews' problematic map published in 1900 which identified only 28 Aboriginal 'nations' on mainland Australia. Moore's 28 corresponding flag designs explore the intersection between identity, nationhood, falsehoods and authenticity. A still larger version of United Neytions, jointly commissioned by Sydney Airport and the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, is now on permanent display at Sydney Airport’s T1 International terminal. Gleebooks wishes to thank Archie Moore and The Commercial, Sydney, for the loan of these artworks.
