25.01.2022 Nang Souphaphone is a student from Laos who came to Melbourne to study Community Services. "I joined Glen Iris Toastmasters because I would like to develop my skills of public speaking in order to be able to use my voice and skills to make the world a better place", says Nang. In our latest meeting, Nang spoke about "Real Leadership" and here is a clip from her powerful speech.
25.01.2022 For my second post of the night wanted to share some highlights from tonight’s speeches! David shared the what, how and why of adventure motorcycling, James shared a personal story of the monkey on his shoulder and how mindfulness has helped him and Stephen shared the story of Koola and how he became the koala we know today. Evaluators have been highly consistent over the last few meetings and tonight was no exception! Evaluations are how we learn and I personally learned multiple things from all evaluators tonight.
24.01.2022 Glen Iris Toastmasters are ready to kick off a new year of activity with a new elected executive committee under the leadership of our new Club President Shaun Vijayalingam. COVID-19 has not stopped us from meeting and our club continues to meet twice a month on Zoom, practising new skills of online presentation and managing effective meetings via videoconferencing! Good luck to the new committee members!
24.01.2022 What can be better than having one of our club members win the Division contest?? Having TWO of our members win at the Division contests! Well done to James Leung for placing 1st in the International Speech contest, and to Hayley Evans for taking the top in the Humorous Speech contest! Hayley and James will represent Toastmasters Eastern Division (and Glen Iris Toastmasters of course!) in the District contests in May!
24.01.2022 It took Hedi Ziv a long time to give it a go and join Glen Iris Toastmasters. But now that he's taken the plunge and became a member, he feels challenged and inspired. "I'm so far out of my comfort zone, that I don't know if I'll ever find my way back", he told us during his icebreaker speech.
20.01.2022 How can learning to cook lead to personal growth? That was the subject of Hedi Ziv's speech this week. We also heard about Natalie Harbig's family life as a youngster, in her "Ice Breaker" speech. And Mahesh More surprised us with a personal story that took us all the way from Africa to Social Media!
20.01.2022 Very Proud of all the members at Glen Iris Toastmasters who smashed the goals for this year with 2 months to go! 10/10 goals achieved and Presidents Distinguished club status. Great leadership from President Shaun Vijay, the executive committee and the commitment from the members for achieving not only their personal goals but the club goals as well. Well done team!
16.01.2022 Going on holidays was the topic of our meeting, in spite of - or maybe because of - the COVID19 lock-down. In the Table Topics section, Anna had to come up with an impromptu response to a question about a holiday that is out of reach. And here is what she said:
16.01.2022 A business consultant, a real estate guru, a logistics expert and a construction project manager walk into a room. It's not the start of a joke. It's the start of a Glen Iris Toastmasters meeting! Yes, we are back to face-to-face meetings after almost a year of online only! We have a COVIDsafe plan in force, but our doors are open! How good is that?
14.01.2022 Calling on all former members of Glen Iris Toastmasters! We are celebrating our 10th Anniversary and You are invited! In the comments, tag yourself and anyone you know from the photos! Don't miss out on a once-in-a-decade opportunity! #GITM #toastmasters
14.01.2022 Cr Garry Thompson joined our 10th Anniversary celebration and congratulated Glen Iris Toastmasters on behalf of the City of Boroondara and the local community of Glen Iris and Ashburton. Thank you Garry for attending our meeting and for your kind words!
13.01.2022 Toastmasters in the Park! It was great fun to have an open-air, mask-free meeting this week. It was a great pleasure to have Distinguished Toastmaster Anna Vandenberg return to our meetings after a few months of absence. And we also had our first canine guest ever, Bobby the Lab...
13.01.2022 A timely article in this months Toastmasters magazine on presenting a speech online https://www.toastmasters.org///apr/appear-your-best-online.
12.01.2022 Tonight was my first time as Toastmaster, normally I manage to escape the photos as I’m the one taking them, but wanted to share something different tonight! I first visited Glen Iris Toastmasters around 6 months ago. In that time I have grown in confidence from someone who was absolutely petrified the first time I got up and participated in table topics to being able to host tonight. If anyone is thinking of coming along, there is no better place to learn, watching and learning from both speakers and evaluators. We have a huge range of experience and backgrounds across the group and I’ve never failed to come away with no takeaway! A big congrats also goes to James tonight with his third speech and third win!!!!
12.01.2022 We are proud to award the winners of the 2020 club contests with the Glen Iris Toastmasters perpetual trophies: Hayley Evans - Winner of the Humorous Speech contest at both the Club and Area levels! James Leung - Winner of the International Speech contest Abaran Deep - Winner of the Speech Evaluation contest Mike McNamara - Winner of the Table Topics contest... Good luck to Hayley and James in the Division level contests in 2021!
12.01.2022 After 9 months of online meetings, we finally got together tonight to celebrate the conclusion of an extraordinary year. We have learnt so much as Toastmasters this year: to adapt, to listen and to socialise even without being physically together. Thank you to the organisers of this fantastic picnic, to Stuart for the quiz, to James for the speech, and to Chris for being MC for the evening. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year fellow Toastmasters! See you at the first meeting of 2021!
12.01.2022 Hayley Evans is the Winner of our 2020 Humorous Speech contest! And Mike McNamara is (again!) the Winner of our Table Topics contest! Congratulations to both of them and well done to all the contestants! Thank you to the organisers who planned and executed the first online contests in the club's history!
10.01.2022 "Why I will win this Toastmasters competition" was the title of James Leung's speech at our International Speech Contest. And James won the contest! Abaran Deep won the Speech Evaluation Contest with a masterclass assessment of our test speaker. So why did James Leung win the race? Click the video to find out!
09.01.2022 We are still active, giving everyone the opportunity to participate and learn public speaking skills unique to Zoom and other videoconferencing channels! Tonight we had our inaugural ice breaker speech via our online format, paving the way for our new members! What’s the same about the new format? High quality speeches, opportunities for members at various stages to practice and receive valuable feedback and evaluations. What’s different? A greater emphasis on tone, engagement within a video conference environment and new skills to develop to connect with your audience. Online or in person Glen Iris Toastmasters continues to be the place to be the best public speaker you can be! Connect with us via our web page to come along to our next Zoom meeting :)
08.01.2022 How do you go from a being a new Toastmaster to an Award Winner in 18 months?
06.01.2022 A speed debate was the highlight of tonight’s Toastmasters, where two teams debated the topical subject Is it smart to stock up on toilet paper This led to a spirited debate amongst 4 members and 2 of our record 14 guests (winning answer was no ). Congrats also goes to two of our members, Dale on his first speech (the first of many) and Stephen for his double win (best evaluator and speaker for the night). Notable mentions to Shaun who won the best debater despite initially thinking he was debating for the opposite side and Elaine (as any research speech about gin deserves a mention ) Special thanks to Mike for keeping it fresh with the debate!
06.01.2022 Our 10th Anniversary meeting had everything you expect in a Toastmasters celebration: A fantastic speech, special guests, drinks, cakes, fish and chips, seagulls, jellyfish and a horse race! If you don't believe it, watch this video:
06.01.2022 Have you found your own voice? One of our newest club members, Winnie Woo, shared with us her journey to find her voice and to come out of her shell, with the support to Toastmasters.
06.01.2022 The American 4th of July gave our Toastmaster Erick reason to choose the theme "Independence Day" for last night's meeting. We talked about all sorts of independence - both national and personal. Anna told us "how NOT to be a Leader" and James shared with us his thoughts about "the Game of Life"!
04.01.2022 We all have a story about a unique pet or animal that touched our lives at some point. We got an opportunity to hear great stories - a few of them made-up - about monkeys, horses, dogs, fish and a few exotic pets! Join our next Zoom meeting to have fun while practising public speaking skills!
04.01.2022 A great article in this months Toastmasters magazine on the basics of crafting a speech. https://www.toastmasters.org//m/write-edit-practice-repeat
02.01.2022 This is what a Toastmaster Zoom meeting looks like (well half of it anyway)! As restrictions begin to ease in Victoria, we looked to next financial year and held elections for club roles. Congratulations to the future Club President Shaun and to members who will fill other roles come July. Elections timed perfectly with the theme of tonight’s winning prepared speech by James as he explored his leadership style. This was James’ 4th speech and 4th best speech win, would love to know what the record is for the longest running winning stretch of a Toastmaster!
02.01.2022 We find ourselves talking about many strange things in our meetings - from the quotidian to childhood memories, from the professional to the metaphysical. What would you have to say about these topics? Join us next time to find out.
01.01.2022 Can you tell the difference between Completed and Finished? Jokemaster Mike McNamara offered us this explanation
