11.01.2022 I just received this message Hi! But of an odd message, but hoping you can help us out.... Driving down from Canberra, we stopped at the playground just down from the CFA at Glenburn, so our daughter could have a stretch and open some of her birthday presents. She had her colouring pencils out to draw in her new colouring book, and the pencil case was unfortunately left on top of the car as we left the car park. (Pink and white spots, full of twisty and clicky pencils). I'm hoping, if anyone goes along that stretch of road, they might keep an eye out for the pencil case for us? We will be returning through there on Saturday, should it be found. Hopefully it is only in the carpark there! It's not so much about the value of the pencil case, just that she is attached to it, being 6, and with today being her birthday, it's a bit sad for her. Hopefully it is still there! Either way, thanks for taking the time to read this. If you can help please comment below and hopefully we can find the lost pencil case. Thanks

02.01.2022 This is my little family on holiday to Spain back in June. The sunflower lanyard around my neck is not a new fashion trend. This is a symbol at airports to aler...t staff that a passenger has a hidden disability and may need adjustments made for them. For example at Malaga airport a security guard spotted the lanyard around my neck and escorted us straight through to special assistance so that we didn’t have to queue to get through security. For children who like to line things up ironically a lot of autistic children find queuing impossible. Supermarkets are now trialling the use of sunflowers lanyards too. I hope that more places will follow suit. My message is if you see someone wearing a sunflower lanyard just be aware that they or someone with them may have a hidden disability. They may not be throwing a tantrum because they didn’t get to have a biscuit. They are likely having a complete sensory meltdown - not by choice but because they are overwhelmed. Perhaps you could do a good deed and allow them to jump ahead of you in the queue. Or allow them a little more space. I’m not saying we need preferential treatment or to bend the rules - I am saying sometimes small adjustments can and should be made and will go a long way to making that family’s experience a little easier that day. Please tell people about the sunflower lanyard scheme - sharing is caring. And the more people who are aware the more awareness will be raised. #autism #autismawareness #mumofautisticboy #hiddendisability ***EDIT*** I did not expect this post to be shared so many times! Really I thought it would be a case of sharing some awareness amongst my friends and family. I’ve had messages from people in Ireland, USA and Canada. Please find this link to how you can get your lanyard. https://www.facebook.com/Hidden-Disabilities-Sunflower-Lanyards-Scheme-101179737927423/?modal=admin_todo_tour Sadly I feel I need to make this plea - please please don’t take advantage of this scheme if you don’t need it. It’s not a queue jump or a VIP treatment. It is minor adjustments for those who actually NEED them. If my son was not struggling I would not expect adjustments to be made and we would queue as normal. Please don’t abuse this system. It’s not fair on those who need it.
01.01.2022 Shepherdson College is located on Elcho Island in the Indigenous Community of Galiwin’ku in the Northern Territory. In term 3 we are running the Galiwin’ku Writ...ing Festival in celebration of the Year of Indigenous Languages. There are no bookshops on the island and therefore it is difficult to find books for students to read and enjoy with their families at home. At the Galwin’ku Writing Festival we would like to give a bag of books to each student to take home to encourage the love of reading. The Festival day is on the 25th September and if possible we would like to have the books by then. Picture books, cookbooks, early reader novels, home and garden or childrens magazines. If you have any books at home that you would like to donate please send them to his address: Yasmin Steel Shepherdson College PMB 74 Winnellie NT 0822 5kg postbags can be purchased from the Post Office for just $17. All your book donations will be greatly appreciated! Thank you for supporting our community.
