23.01.2022 Volunteers are the most invaluable part of any community, and the Eastern Barred Bandicoot recovery project is no different. In today's video, meet some of those amazing people - some who have been involved since the beginning - and how you can be involved.

23.01.2022 Following on from our post on Monday about the fish death event in the Glenelg River estuary, our officers have been out on the Glenelg estuary and upstream tributaries monitoring the situation. We are pleased to report that for now water quality is improving in the estuary and the high flows still coming in from upstream. The monitoring by our officers and the valuable information provided by the community has helped us to determine the extent of the event. From what we have observed and heard, it appears that the fish deaths occurred from the Dry Creek/Donovans area down to around Nelson. The top end of the estuary does not appear to have been affected. If anyone else has any further information, please send us a message via Facebook or call us on (03) 5571 2526 https://www.abc.net.au//vic-authorities-investiga/12760234

19.01.2022 The Victorian Government’s Biodiversity Bushfire Recovery Grants program is funding two important bushfire recovery projects to help rebuild our region’s biodiversity. The Friends of the Forgotten Woodlands Inc. will use land on the edge of Grampians National Park to establish 500 trees for seed production of Drooping Sheoak to repopulate the species. Lexton Landcare Group will support landholders to rebuild biodiversity on 3,000ha of fire-affected land through revegetation, ...animal pest control, and mitigating soil erosion. 17.01.2022 Are you a landholder located on the Glenelg Plain and want to help save the endangered South-eastern Red-tailed Black Cockatoo? If you answered yes, and you live in the area identified in the map, we want to hear from you! We are working with Greening Australia to revegetate feeding habitat for the endangered South-eastern Red-tailed Black Cockatoo. ... These endangered birds have a highly specialised feeding habit, limited to the fruit of Brown and Desert Stringybark. We are currently seeking expressions of interest from landholders who want to receive patches of critical feeding habitat on their property for the endangered species. (see map for project area). For more information, or to register your interest, please contact Ben Zeeman at the Glenelg Hopkins CMA (0411 311 328, [email protected] au) or Dave Warne at Greening Australia ([email protected]). 17.01.2022 It's Working for Victoria Wednesday again where we meet one of our crew members employed by the CMA as part of the Victorian Government's Working for Victoria job's program. Meet Rob Foard (yes, Foard ...) Planting trees in a paddock is along way from the theatre scene, but when coronavirus shut down the performance industry, Rob Foard found himself without an income as Warrnambool’s performing arts venue, The Lighthouse Theatre, closed indefinitely.... Covid shut down the theatre and I needed to do something, its as simple as that, he said. Working outdoors might be a stretch from his usual occupation, but Rob is loving the change. I’m certainly finding some muscles I wasn’t sure were still there! he laughed. But its great to be outside and learning a new skill set a lot of what will be transferrable and its something different. It’s also giving me a job when, thanks to coronavirus I didn’t have one, and that is a good thing. Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning

16.01.2022 What's in the box? Last night a momentous occasion was celebrated in Victoria’s south-west when the Tiverton predator proof enclosure had Eastern Barred Bandicoots released into the wild within its fences. The project at Tiverton has been a labour of love largely through the leadership of Nigel Sharpe with a huge partnership between many organisations, and now, the almost 1000ha property will have up to 50 bandicoots released over coming months. ... The project at Tiverton has been supported by the Glenelg Hopkins CMA through funding from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program, led by Tiverton Rothwell Partners, together with Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning, Mount Rothwell Biodiversity Interpretation Centre Zoos Victoria Odonata Phillip Island Nature Parks, The University of Melbourne and the Eastern Barred Bandicoot Recovery Team. The Glenelg Hopkins CMA is proud to have been part of this wonderful project and congratulates everyone involved with turning a farming property purchased in 2011 into a predator-free Bandicoot enclosure by 2020. 15.01.2022 A soggy home isn't what any of us would want, but this summer if you're around Warrnambool, Victoria you can visit the Warrnambool Art Gallery and check out some of the animals who do love a soggy home in our catchment! The gallery's Family Learning Centre has been transformed into a vibrant wetland where children can explore and play with wonderful oversized creatures, created by local artist Megan Nicolson. The Soggy Homes: The Wonder of Wetlands, exhibition Megan has crea...ted a White-footed Dunnart, large Growling Grass Frog, a Western Bright-Eyed Brown Butterfly (that is regionally extinct), the brightly-coloured Little Galaxias fish and other plants and animals for children to wander around in. She has paired her work with a soundscape made from recordings by the Nature Glenelg Trust The exhibition is on at the WAG until June 6 2021. 11.01.2022 The bandicoots released into the wild at Tiverton in Victoria's south-west - a momentous and long term project under the leadership of Nigel Sharpe from Tiverton Rothwell Partners, turning a farming property into a predator free Bandicoot reserve - weren't too sure whether getting out of the box was the best idea when they were released last night. We are pretty sure once they realised the amazing surrounds they were now living in, they were pretty happy Richard Hill (Chair o...f the Eastern Barred Bandicoot Recovery Team) encouraged them out. 11.01.2022 We are saddened to have to report that the Glenelg River estuary is currently experiencing a significant fish death event following the recent flood events. Dissolved oxygen levels in the water following the recent rainfall event has plummeted to below levels at which fish and other aquatic animals can survive. We are keeping a close eye on the river. If you have any photos or information, please let us know when and where the information was captured. DELWP BarwonSouthWest Victorian Fisheries Authority Environment Protection Authority Victoria

10.01.2022 Small public reserves let you experience and enjoy a lot of nature - for free - and are often less populated than major natural drawcards. Take for example: Lake Cartcarong at Winslow. 01.01.2022 How is this for an achievement - 50,000 trees! Glenelg Hopkins CMA has partnered with the Victorian State Government to help deliver the Working for Victoria employment initiative; an employment program designed to help people that have lost their jobs due to COVICD-19. Our CMA has employed 20 new crew members split into two crews of 10, with one based in Hamilton and the other in Warrnambool. ... This week was a significant milestone as our crew members have now planted 50,000 trees as part of a large tree planting program (riparian plantings, shelterbelt plantings and individual paddock trees) on farming properties and public land. Now the planting activity is complete both crews will start a woody weed control spraying and removal program on a combination of private, public and urban areas. 01.01.2022 Understanding what’s on the ground before cultural burns take place on the Victorian Volcanic Plains requires a team of people and a lot of keen eyes. Recently Glenelg Hopkins CMA team members and Traditional Owners met a private landholder on their property near Skipton to plan an autumn burn using Aboriginal cool burning techniques, and undertake a pre-burn flora survey. The landholders have been managing their extensive native grasslands using a combination of grazing a...nd mosaic burning for many years, and are excited to be learning about how the land would have been managed using fire pre-European settlement. It is hoped the cultural burn will result in a reduction of exotic weed species, increase native plant regeneration and overall fire hazard reduction. This activity is another example of the working partnerships that exist between the many organisations and individuals to achieve beneficial environmental, cultural and agricultural outcomes. This burn will be a partnership between the Country Fire Authority, Traditional Owners, private landholders and the Glenelg Hopkins CMA.
