03.01.2022 Media Release - Become a Mentor and Make Real a Difference in a Local Young Persons Life Despite not owning a car or having access to a licensed driver at home..., Portland teenager Tiffanie Smith is quickly gaining all the skills she needs to take her driving test when she turns 18 in a few months. The student has been taking weekly driving lessons, ranging from one hour up to almost three hours since February, as part of the Glenelg L2P Learner Driver Mentor Program. Learner drivers are required to complete 120+ hours of logged driving practice before going for their probationary licence and the L2P Program, delivered by Council in partnership with VicRoads, has assisted more than 100 learner drivers in our Shire. While the program has run successfully for four years, Mayor John Northcott said Council was now urgently seeking volunteer mentors to ensure the service could continue to be provided. Many young people face significant barriers in obtaining this practice and road safety skills, he said. L2P relies on mentors who offer their valuable time and support in helping these learner drivers by becoming their supervising driver in a program-dedicated vehicle. Mentoring in L2P can make a huge impact on the leaner drivers life - besides road safety outcomes, friendship and non-judgemental support can also be an added benefit. Tiffanie Smith said she had developed a great friendship with her mentor, Graeme Coysh (both pictured), and that, as well as giving her the necessary driving skills, the program provided her with a chance to connect with part of her community. My mentor is great hes very insightful and teaches me a lot of great tricks and tips for driving, she said. He has a great sense of humour and we always have a laugh. Based on my experience I would 100 per cent tell others to give it (L2P) a shot. Its there to help people and you dont have to worry about adjusting your lifestyle too much - if you have a job or go to school the program can be worked in easily. Mentors must hold a current Victorian drivers licence, live in Portland or surrounds, be prepared to undergo an eligibility screening process, attend free training sessions to prepare for the program and commit to at least one hour drive session each week. There are no costs involved to become a mentor. Program dedicated vehicles are provided and support is given at all times. There is flexibility within the program so volunteer mentors can work around other life commitments. The Glenelg L2P Learner Driver Mentor Program is holding the next free training session on Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th September, 2014 in Portland for people interested in becoming a volunteer mentor. For all enquiries, please contact the L2P Program Coordinator, Elly Murrell on (03) 5522 2329 or 0466 149 341 or email [email protected].

02.01.2022 Who gets to do their driving practice in a brand new car? L2P learners do! Become a learner driver on the L2P program, phone 0466 149 341 or email [email protected]
