25.01.2022 Do you have a little one starting Kinder or Prep this year? I found these activity books in @targetaus and they are a great home resource to get your kids doing some early reading, writing and basic maths before school begins. There are varied age ranges and types, but all activity pads are A3 size which means lots of room to write! At $10 I thought they were great value! #schoolsback #education #literacy #numeracy #helpingkids #earlylearning #speechpathologist #speechpathologistmelbourne #glenirisspeechpathology #gleniris #learning #melbournemums @ Glen Iris Speech Pathology

18.01.2022 TRANSITIONS AND CHILDREN! Transitions (moving from one activity to another) can be notoriously hard for children. You know the feeling - it takes forever to leave the house, don’t even start on how long it took to get in the car, you make it to the park, have a nice play, and the the next thing you know your child is having a tantrum about leaving the park. Transitions happen ALL day, and if you have a child who finds them difficult it can be a never ending negotiating nightm...are. There a few key strategies to know to get ahead of the game. Firstly, it’s important to understand why transitions are tricky for your child. Well, basically change is hard, change is anxiety provoking. You know how you feel starting a new job or moving house? These are anxiety provoking transitions for adults, but a child can feel the same with seemingly small moves in their big world. A few key strategies can really help. 1. Prepare. The more your child understands what is going to happen the better. Visual schedules outlining the days activities can help, or showing your child a picture of where they are going. 2. Transitional Objects/Jobs/Songs. Allow your child to take a toy with them, use phrases like Let’s go and strap bunny into the car, Choose a toy and bring it to the car for mummy, Does bunny feel like a trip to the park? OR try a transitional job - Can you bring mummy’s keys to the car, I need your help to put the bags in the car. When leaving a place try Let’s collect some leaves to take home, Would you like a special flower to take home and put in your room? Transitional songs also work well, make them up to traditional nursery rhymes for the situation Everybody pack away, pack away, pack away, everybody pack away, it’s time for lunch! 3. Allow extra time, and be organised. Rushing makes it worse! Remain calm, it’s frustrating but if you understand why it happens and have strategies to put in place it should result in smoother transitions for everyone! See more

10.01.2022 Have you ever had a parenting win because you really stopped and thought about your child and their needs, putting your own aside? This morning my little G started Prep. We often experience separation anxiety (yes both of us ) and new experiences and events don’t come easy. I made a conscious decision to make this morning LOW key. No fuss, no photos, just a day at school. I must have looked like the most cold hearted mother - people offered to take pics and I declined, but ...I know my child and things like photos can derail her easily. We had the best morning. She transitioned like a champion, no tears, it was great. Don’t get me wrong, the kids who take the beautiful photos and get excited are amazing, I often used to wish we could be like that. But it’s not us and that’s ok. If you follow your child and cater to their own unique needs you’ll get the best out of them. Today I put my own needs aside, and benefited so greatly. This pic was taken yesterday, and I’ll take another tomorrow x

09.01.2022 Because yesterday’s iso creation was pretty special! A really great activity that will take up more than 5 minutes and get kids outside! 1. Go for a walk, ride or scoot and collect your nature items. 2. Create your very own little garden/hut for a toy - we did use some blue tack and sticky tape to secure! Send through any you make and I’ll feature them! GO! X

05.01.2022 Having a COVID-19 swab test can be scary for children and you might be wondering how to explain it to them. Isla visited our Respiratory Infection Clinic last w...eek for a COVID-19 test after she was showing symptoms which meet the criteria for testing. The grade two student took us with her while she had her swab and told us what it felt like from a child's perspective. Thanksfully for Isla, her test came back negative. 02.01.2022 Unfortunately the current circumstances, including my children’s school closing at the end of the week, has meant I will need to suspend all speech pathology sessions until April 20th (lets hope things are looking better by then ). Please get in touch for additional resources, advice or activities to do at home in the meantime! I’ll also keep posting ideas to keep the little ones busy if we are home for an extended period. Take care everyone! X
