23.01.2022 One of the most enjoyable parts of our job here at Glenlogan is driving around the farm and then walking through the paddocks checking foals. We have had almost 60 foals here now since the start of August and there are some terrific types amongst them. It was Glen's first time doing this - but the smile on his face showed just how much he enjoyed it.

22.01.2022 TIME TO RUN! We are now a few weeks into the foaling season and have just over 20 new foals on the ground here at Glenlogan. The first few weeks of a newborn foal's life is spent in a small yard with just their mother for company. These yards are around 30m x 30m and this time ensures they have enough strength in their legs to be let out into a larger paddock (usually with 3 or 4 other mare and foals for company). This morning we let the first 2 of this year's foals out into a bigger paddock and they loved it. The girls from the Foaling Unit were there to film them as they really stretched their legs for the first time in their lives. It is always a super moment to witness!

21.01.2022 IT’S ON! Yep, the breeding season is now in full swing and it is all hands on deck here at Glenlogan. Yesterday was the first day of the covering season and it was great to get through it with all of our sires safe, sound and as keen as always. I must admit it is always a nervous time for us - as we need to balance and control the stallion’s eagerness to get on with the job whilst ensuring the mare is relaxed enough to be receptive and safe.... There is no question that after nine and a half months of inactivity, the Glenlogan sires were fired up and ready and there was plenty of roaring going on when we opened the shed doors just after midnight on September 1. As could be expected, Glen was down there helping out and, even though he didn’t actually participate in holding any mares or stallions, he came away quite wide eyed and a lot more knowledgeable. We always have four men in the shed for our coverings. One holding the stallion, another holding the mare’s tail, one at the front holding the near side of the mare and the fourth person on the offside at the front of the mare. This method works very safely and smoothly and the team in the shed develop a great relationship with each other over the course of the next few months.

20.01.2022 FIRST GROUP OF WEANLINGS FINISHED! There are very few more rewarding moments on a farm like ours than what can be experienced during the weaning period. With approx. 100 foals to wean this year, we split them into groups of 14 or 15 and take a 2 week period with all of them. It begins on Day one when both the mare and foal are brought into a stable and a head collar placed on the foal for the first time. On that day, both mare and foal will be taken down to an enclosed and co...vered round yard filled with soft sand. During their time in there, the foal will learn what it is like to have pressure applied to it's head collar and how they are expected to react. This takes an experienced team to do this successfully as it is very important to gain the foal's trust and willingness to work with you. Some cope very well and adjust easily. Others take longer .... but they all get there in the end. Later that day, the mare will be taken away from the foal and we begin a process that takes 12 days and will see the foal learn how to be led, have it's feet picked up, rugged, hosed, groomed and plenty more. On the final day (and what can be seen in this clip), the foals are all walked around the parade ring, loaded onto our truck, unloaded near their paddock and then allowed to stretch the legs in a good gallop after 2 weeks of intensive work. It's a great time and it's wonderful to be a part of it. One group down ...... six more to go!

19.01.2022 STALLIONS ALL FIRING! The end of September is a pretty hectic time here at Glenlogan. Our vetting of mares to get them ready for service by the stallions, and the checking for pregnancies, happens 6 days a week and can take up most of the morning. Mares are ultra sound scanned to determine both suitability for a service time and to gauge pregnancy results. Mares are "preg tested" at 16 days, 30 days and 45 days - with the final one of those being the time they are deemed "in ...foal". In the attached clip, one of our super vet team here, Ewan, explains to Glen what a 30 day pregnancy looks like.

17.01.2022 AND THIS IS HOW CALM THEY GET: This clip shows the same colt that was being educated in the round yard in the previous clip, now out and casually walking around the farm. This shows him walking around the parade ring and then being taken under the shelter. It is quite amazing how these 4 or 5 days of ponying can really turn a youngster around and help develop a really trusting relationship.

17.01.2022 2015 Season Foaling Now Well On Track! We are only 8 days into August but the foals here at Glenlogan are starting to arrive thick and fast. Probably 39 out of every 40 foals born are delivered between 6 at night and 6 in the morning - but just sometimes they surprise you and it allows a few of the team to gather around and witness what we always view as a really special moment.... That was the case on Friday when this lovely Rothesay filly entered the world just after midday. There were probably 6 or 7 of us there all ready to assist - but in the end it was all very simple. 24 hours later and the filly is doing really well and already showing a real zest for life.

15.01.2022 WEANING AND RAINING! Well ...... it is at this time of the year here at Glenlogan that we all get to finally take a deep breath and just take the "foot off the pedal a touch" after going pretty hard since August 1 last year. All of the major yearling sales have now been completed, the mares are safely in foal and just enjoying their time in the paddocks whilst the first stage of our weaning and handling has already been completed. Add to that the fact that it is now FINALLY r...aining out here - and there are smiles floating around on the dials of all involved with the farm. With further rain forecast over the next few days, Glenlogan has received 90mm in the last 3 days and already there is now a splash of green where before there was just brown. It is amazing how quickly the place can transform! And speaking of transformations: the weaning and handling of last year's foals is also in full swing and, although this can be tough, physical work, it is also something that the staff really enjoy as the youngsters progress from very hesitant to really friendly and trusting over the course of their 3 or 4 weeks of education. The first part of our weaning involves the broodmare, stallion and foaling barn crews, who spend 1 week with them immediately after the mare and foal have been separated. During this time they are taught to lead, have their feet picked up, be easily caught and haltered and to trust all interactions with us. At the end of this week, they are trucked (another important step in their education) to the other side of the farm and handed across to the yearling crew, which is where they are now. The yearling crew continue their learning curve by stabling, rugging them and "ponying" them. The first part of this ponying occurs in the round yard aboard one of the two "farm legends" in Reggie or Peggy - who are both super at teaching the youngsters what is and isn't acceptable. The weanlings are led both ways and over the course of the next 5 days are taught to do figure 8's and to calmly walk around the farm and parade areas. Watching their progression is very rewarding for all involved - and we all love it! Yep! This is a good time of the year!

15.01.2022 ONLY TWO TO GO! Well .... with the arrival of this little fellow yesterday afternoon - it means we only have two mares left to foal here at Glenlogan this season. The colt in the clip is by Jet Spur and is out of (the appropriately named) A Happy Day. Which it certainly will be for us after the next two mares foal.... Hopefully that will be tonight or tomorrow night. Fingers crossed!

13.01.2022 FINALLY ...... well ...... perhaps! After having just had the one run during the last 12 months (back in March of this year), we have the fingers crossed that our horse, THE WHITE HOPE, will return to the racetrack this weekend. The big fellow had a terrific start to his career and was one of the most promising horses in the state before a foot injury put a halt to his progress. However plenty of time recovering here at Glenlogan and then some careful handling in the stables ...of trainer Matt Dunn finds our gelding ready to resume this weekend provided the track is reasonably firm. "We have only given him the one trial, which is always a worry for a horse who has had a long time off, but we need to get him back on the track if we are any hope of having him ready on Magic Millions day," Matt said. "He knocked up a little bit in that trial but has recovered well and all appears on track. "However I don't want to knock him around by starting on a really rain affected track - so we will wait for another day if we are not happy on race morning. "He is certainly nowhere near peak fitness - but in saying that I have been really happy with everything he has done for us on the training tracks. "He has also drawn a very bad alley - but we don't have a record to protect - we just need to get back to the races." The White Hope is scheduled to run around in the last race from Eagle Farm on Saturday - starting at 5pm.

10.01.2022 SHE'S BACK! Tomorrow at Caulfield sees the return to racing of a mare that I think is one of the real "feel good" stories of the year. It is a daughter of one of our sires, Bradbury's Luck (pictured here running around his paddock), and her name is SHE CAN SKATE. If you are unfamiliar with the story - then go back through our timeline on this page and start at May 26. There are a couple of posts after that as well but, in summary, it outlines how a filly with plenty of abilit...y (She Can Skate) was changing the lives of a couple of terrific people with her exploits on the racetracks. The owners, Rick and Carol, are self-confessed battlers just wanting to have a go - and they are certainly achieving that. In just three starts last preparation, She Can Skate reaped in about $180,000 in prizemoney and saw her value as a future broodmare sky rocket. She was sent to the spelling paddocks at the end of June so she could be aimed at some of the very best races in Australia - the Melbourne Spring. And now ....... she's back! Tomorrow at 2.35pm Melbourne time and 1.35pm Qld time - Rick and Carol's pride and joy will line up against some of the fastest fillies and mares in the country. But don't count her out as she is sure to be there fighting all the way until the end. Tune in. Give her a cheer. And if she is successful - raise a glass and toast a little mare that encompasses all the reasons why we really love what we do. The pride and the passion runs in the blood - and She Can Skate has given her all every time she ahs stepped out. Whatever the result - I know that everyone will be very proud.

10.01.2022 IT'S RAINING KOALAS! Well ...... not quite! But it does seem that both the rain and the koalas are timing their runs together! At this point in time (lunch on Saturday) it hasn't really rained much here at Glenlogan - however we have our fingers very tightly crossed that it will get significantly heavier after we finish our feed runs this afternoon. We certainly need it. However ... the koalas are here! In the last 3 days we have seen at least 3 different koalas playing around the farm and, in the early hours of this morning's foal watch, we spied this pair climbing a tree right beside our foaling out yards. This is the first one we have seen with a baby for a number of years and it is a nice reminder to us all out here about how special it can be sharing our lives with the animal world.

09.01.2022 STORM SEASON BEGINS! FOALING SEASON ENDS! Well it's almost midway through December and our foaling season has FINALLY finished! Early this morning (1.30am) the last of our 156 foals were born for the year - a lovely brown filly. All went smoothly and mother and daughter have come through it in super order. The team of girls responsible for running the foaling unit and delivering the foals during the last few months have done a terrific job and can feel very proud of their eff...orts. Thankfully it will be almost 9 months before we have to go through it all again! However, as the foaling season ends the stormy season has started - and yesterday unleashed a "cracker" out here! The wind that whipped through the place was incredible! It took down trees that had stood for years and snapped branches as if they were match-sticks. Thankfully all horses were safe and after a rapid fire 20 minutes of driving rain and howling wind - the sun returned and we began the task of cleaning up (which we had also done the day before). The weather guys are tipping more of the same for later this week ... but the fingers are crossed that this next lot just delivers soaking rain and no damage. However .... I suppose all of this is all part of "life on the farm" ... and we wouldn't give that up for anything.

08.01.2022 BRINGING IN THE NEW YEAR WITH HOPE! On Saturday at Doomben our horse, The White Hope, will be attempting to end 2013 on a high note for the farm when he takes his place in Race 5 from Doomben - set to jump at 2.45pm Qld time. The big fella has been in sparkling form of late and, as you will see from the below, his trainer Matt Dunn expects him to be very hard to beat again tomorrow.... I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our staff, clients and friends for their assistance and support during the past 12 months and I hope that 2014 is a bumper year with plenty of laughs and success. It is a pleasure to be associated not only with this farm - but also with all of the wonderful people that make it what it is. Let's hope that THE WHITE HOPE gets the ball rolling for us. Below are Matt's thoughts. All the best everyone! "The White Hope has drawn perfectly in barrier 7 at Doomben on Saturday. He does look the horse most likely to go forward from this group and lead, however other speed may come from Hampden (barrier 10), Regular (barrier 8) and After Baron (barrier 6). In saying that though, I don't think any of those horses have the White Hopes early speed and they would probably have to push too hard to get there if they decided they were intent on making the running. Therefore, we can hope that he can cross and find the fence without too much pressure and then find his rhythm reasonably quickly. His work on Tuesday morning was fantastic, he looks great ad I am very happy with him going into this race. Hopefully he can keep on his winning way and we can then move on to our target race next start (The Magic Millions Cup on Jan 11)."

06.01.2022 87 FOALS AND COUNTING! It was a big 11 hours here at the farm last night with 5 foals born between 7.15pm on Saturday evening and 5.50am on Sunday morning. These newborns have taken our season tally to 87 foals so far - with approximately 110 left to go. The attached clip shows the birth about one week ago of a pretty important foal here at Glenlogan. He is a big, strong chestnut son of Show A Heart and he has a very famous brother - the Group 1 winning, and earner of over $1... million in prizemoney, Woorim. His arrival was one we were all anxiously anticipating as the normal gestation period for a mare is about 11 months and 1 week. However this fellow kept us all on the edges of our seats by making us wait over one extra month - staying inside his mum for 12 months and 1.5 weeks (which is one of the longest we have had here ever). He did however make life easy by arriving in the middle of the day and our Foal Unit Manager, Hayley, and her second in charge, Fiona, had no problems welcoming him to the world and reported everything as a normal delivery. The colt is now up and running around and we will post a few more photos of him in the days to come. It is a great time of year here watching all these beautifully well-bred foals developing and running around.

06.01.2022 FOALING HAS BEGUN! It doesn't seem that long ago that we were foaling out last year's crop ..... but here it is again already! With just a few days of August now behind us we already have 9 bouncing, beautiful foals running around the paddocks of Glenlogan and it won't be long before there are PLENTY more!... This video footage is of a Real Saga colt born at 8pm on Tuesday August 5. He is out of a mare called Shiraki and it is her 4th foal. Will soon post his first "meeting" with his mum.

05.01.2022 A SPECIAL FILLY FOR THE FARM. In the early hours of Sunday morning, just a touch before 2am, we welcomed a healthy filly on to the grounds of Glenlogan - and it is one we have been awaiting for many years. This filly is out of one of our favourite mares, Academy Of Dreams, who has been living here for 10 years now. She has visited our stallions every year since - producing two Group winners, including Show A Heart's very first Group One winner in Heart Of Dreams. To say she i...s close to our hearts would be an understatement (hey - that is a pretty good name for her too - Close To Our Hearts! I like it!). Anyway ..... Her owner, Larry Bartle, has been wanting a filly from his mare for the last decade ...... but Academy has just kept leaving colts year after year ..... until today! At 1.50am this morning we welcomed a healthy Real Saga filly into the world and there is no question this one will be getting some extra special care. It was great to receive the text this morning from Trish (who was in control of foaling her out last night) letting me know that Academy had finally foaled a filly. She was Number 138 for the farm this year but was greeted as if she was our first.

05.01.2022 SEASON ONLY JUST AROUND THE CORNER! As the start of the breeding season rapidly approaches (Sept 1), the boys in the stallion area are busy getting the GP team of sires fit for the months to come. After 9 months of "relaxing" the stallions need to be at the top of their game to ensure they are ready to look after the mares that will be visiting them soon - and that includes having a good level of fitness before the start of spring rocks around. The attached clip shows REAL S...AGA enjoying some light lunging this morning in the round yard. All of the stallions are lunged 3 times a week at this time of the year and have been built up to cope with 10-15 minutes at this pace. They enjoy it as much as we do and get to kick their heels up in their paddocks after finishing in the round yard. It's been a wonderful year for the stallions here at Glenlogan, with the team set to claim Champion Stallion honours in Qld in every single department - and that's something we are very proud of. With just a few days left before the racing season ends: Jet Spur will be crowned Champion Sire in Qld, Rothesay will be awarded Champion First Season Sire and Real Saga looks set to claim the Champion 2YO Sire title for the 3rd year in a row. Pretty happy with that!

04.01.2022 HELLO! Here is the first time the foal and mare had contact. Always a really special moment.

01.01.2022 WHAT A GREAT START TO THE NEW YEAR! Well 2014 kicked off in a terrific way for us all here at Glenlogan with a Magic Millions Yearling Sale week that would have to be ranked as our "best ever". The horses all looked superb and were tuned to the minute - making everyone associated with the preparation understandably very proud. As they should be.... Our first season sire, Rothesay, was one of the top 4 stallions in the country for return-on-investment but, more importantly, they have now gone to most of the very top stables in the country. He is going to get a wonderful opportunity to be successful. Apart from being thrilled with the way our horses sold (we averaged almost $139,000 for our big draft in the main session), I have to say I was probably even more proud of the team of staff we took down there. I can truthfully say that I have never worked with a better outfit and they always conduct themselves in a manner that makes it wonderful to be associated with them. They were stars and in my opinion the best on grounds! However, when handing out the praise, I don't want to leave out the guys who stayed here looking after things on the farm - which is every bit as important as being there to represent at the sales. As usual - they too were fantastic and I thank them for allowing us the peace of mind to concentrate on selling whilst knowing the farm and the horses were in good hands. You know who you are - THANK YOU. To all of you here at GP though - thanks team. You know I love you! Wouldn't swap you guys for anyone. Well done.

01.01.2022 HAPPY BIRTHDAY AND FOALING BEGINS! August 1 marks the official start of the foaling season and it's a time that everyone out here at Glenlogan really looks forward to. No matter how many times you have seen it, I am sure there is something special about the first few foalings of each year and that feeling has been no different in 2015.... We expect to foal out somewhere around 170 mares this season so it promises to be a busy time. Our first arrival got here a week or so early - but is doing TERRIFIC. He is a REAL SAGA colt and he enjoyed stretching his legs this morning. Let's hope we get another 169 just like him!
