25.01.2022 ***#Busking on the Gold Coast*** Earlier in September, Council resolved to lower the annual fee for buskers from over $400 per year to $50 per year. It was also resolved to allow buskers to sell merch and CDs in their designated locations. I was pleased to advocate for this outcome and align our action to the intents outlined in our city's #LiveMusic Action Plan. You can find out more here - https://www.goldcoast.qld.gov.au/busking-1918.html... The Gold Coast Bulletin reports on the initiative below, and I've quoted my commentary listed in that article.; ******* Cr Tozer said charging $50 ... was a fair and equitable outcome. This exercise is not a cost recovery exercise, it won’t cover the costs. But that is a commitment that we as a city are making to the music sector, the cultural sector, he said. Not every busker who comes out there is a musician. Some are mimes, some are magicians acrobats, things like that. That $50 fee puts us in a similar position as City of Sydney who charge $47 a year. Cr Tozer said he welcomed the officer’s recommendation that an artist could sell their CDs and other products. It’s really important, these days with streaming services and per unit sales being so low for a musician, one of the best ways for a great musician to generate a living wage is by selling goodies, merchandise next to their musical performance. Outside the council, Cr Tozer: I am pleased the council supported these changes to busking permits, enabling better accessibility for aspiring musicians and performers to be perform in our soon-to-be-busy again streets. The Gold Coast loves music and I’m sure it will only be a matter of time before the next Ed Sheeran, Tracy Chapman or Amy Shark gets discovered busking in Cavill or around the city.

25.01.2022 New owners at Rosellas. They hosted our musical guests last night, and have rooms available over coming months for quick getaways to Springbrook Mountain. Maybe you and your special one are due a getaway?

24.01.2022 What a treat to have Shellie Morris Music in #Springbrook tonight, for Festival of Small Halls Australia, telling stories of her family and childhood. Beautiful, and wonderful for our mountain community. The event was sold out and deliciously catered by Greenwood Farm. Thanks to everyone involved in making it happen.

23.01.2022 Last week I got to meet the team down at the new #Mudgeeraba Hearing Centre, opened recently in Mudgeeraba Market Shopping Centre. Michael, the owner, runs a family business and this is his second location after opening Arundel Hearing Centre a few years back. Two years ago, he relocated to south-east Qld from Darwin where he ran his own practice for 10 years. He has over 20 years’ experience in the hearing services industry, beginning in the mid 1990’s at Hearing Aid Special...ists in Port Macquarie, NSW. He has completed a degree of Bachelor of Audiometry at the University of Armidale and is a full member of the Australian College of Audiology. Michael is certified as a qualified practitioner by the Australian Department of Health, to provide subsidized services to Australian Pensioners. Even in our short meeting, I could see that he'll fit into Mudgeeraba just fine, with the way he talked about caring about getting the best outcome for people and overcoming customers concerns about the difficult subject of hearing loss. If you're wanting to check your hearing, or maybe you need your loved one to check theirs, drop in to see Michael and Cyndi in the coming weeks. Help me welcome the team into our hinterland region!

23.01.2022 ***Changing Customer Service Centre model*** Today I received a call from a couple in Reedy Creek who made it very clear they wanted to pay their rates in person at Burleigh. They were angry because they felt entitled to pay their rates at the place they always had and they were convinced there was a nefarious plan by council to make it harder for pensioners to pay rates. Needless to say perhaps, that's just not true. It was a difficult conversation, because Council recently ...Continue reading

22.01.2022 This is great news. Well done Redsox and MMSC.

21.01.2022 Phenomenal to see Bleach Festival launch for 2020 tonight, at a ceremony hosted by our very own Peta Fielding of Burleigh Brewing Co. (in her role as a director of Placemakers Ltd) This years event sees over 200 performances during November and employs a bunch of musicians and artists from our city at a time where that sector has faced significant challenges. Well done to Rosie, Matt and the whole team. We’re cheering for you! Find out more about the program here - https://bl...eachfestival.com.au #AreYouReadyForThis #creativegold #bleachfestival2020 #bleach2020

21.01.2022 This event is one of my favourites for the city. If you like movies and storytelling, pick some sessions and get involved!

20.01.2022 Spread that festive cheer and be considerate over the holidays With more people flocking to the Gold Coast for the warm weather over these holidays it’s important to remember to be a responsible pet owner when walking your dog. Dogs must be kept on leash at all times in public unless in a designated off leash area.... Ensure you carry a supply of dog waste bags and scoop the poop and bin it. Know where you can take your dog off leash and follow the rules to keep everyone safe. No dogs are allowed within 200 metres of a flagged bathing area. No dogs are allowed in children’s playgrounds. To help protect our native wildlife, don’t let your dog in environmentally sensitive areas. Dog attacks can occur in an instant, don’t let your dog be a statistic this holidays.

20.01.2022 Hi everyone please be advised that Mudgeeraba parkrun will be cancelled tomorrow. This decision has been made by myself Trent as I’m run director tomorrow and ...also our fellow run/event director team. I’m sorry if this upsets our local parkrun community but for us it’s the correct one. Please pass this information on to those who don’t have Facebook and hopefully things will be back to normal the following Saturday.

19.01.2022 I was humbled today to be invited to address a meeting of Mudgeeraba Show Society life members, as they met together for high tea at the Bill Deacon pavilion. These ladies and gentlemen have served the Show Society selflessly for many years, some since the 50’s, as our major event is planned and delivered each year, and navigates challenges (such as this years COVID-19 disaster). They’ve seen the society through floods, droughts, storms and the passing of key leaders even within days of the event. Most of all they’ve led the volunteerism that Mudgeeraba is famous for, leading by example as community catalysts for a legacy that has lasted almost 100 years and is likely to last another century more.

18.01.2022 The Hussy Hicks are a gem of our beautiful city and are headliners of the Festival of Small Halls Australia regional QLD tour, opening tonight in #Springbrook courtesy of Springbrook Mountain Community Association. It’s an honour to introduce them tonight. #creativegold #folkmusic #gcmusic

17.01.2022 Very pleased to attend the Mudgeeraba Show Society AGM tonight, with members and volunteers participating in the governance of our great little organisation. The 2021 Show will be awesome, no doubt, and we’ll rebound strongly from the COVID-19 constraints.

17.01.2022 Thanks to Maegan for chatting with us about this story ... I’m so proud our little film has had over 5000 views on Facebook

13.01.2022 Congrats to all those families celebrating a tough school year with their kids this week and as the term closes out. Our family had our own celebration yesterday, with two Excellence in Maths awards and an Excellence in English. I’m a very proud dad, and we were able to share the day with Jude and Nagymama (grandma in Hungarian). This school year was pretty unique so for all who triumphed over tougher conditions... well done!

13.01.2022 If you intend to visit Springbrook, please consider local residents when you are seeking a carpark. There is ample room at the Settlement Day Use Area, so please park your car there if you intend to walk to Purling Brook.

12.01.2022 Happy 1st birthday Anekawa!

10.01.2022 #Mudgeeraba plays #Helensvale this weekend. Sunday at the web (Firth Park).

10.01.2022 A fire ban from tonight. Please look out for your neighbours and ensure you follow the rules that keep us safe.

09.01.2022 ***#Staycation*** This past week I took a week off for school holidays with my three sons, and to celebrate my 43rd birthday. My wife Jude and I decided that instead of going away from the city and booking accommodation or a campsite, we'd just "holiday from home", setting aside the money we would have spent on a room/campsite for activities in the city. It was heaps of fun and a super success! We went kayaking in Tallebudgera Creek and Currumbin Creek, visited Game Over GC ...in Helensvale (gokarts, rock climbing, laser tag and arcade games), checked out Currumbin Treetop Challenge Currumbin Wildlife Park, had a morning of scootering at Mudgeeraba Skatepark, visited the Sports Bar at The Sporting Globe Robina, demolished an afternoon of sushi at Sushi Train Christine Corner, and played a bunch of cool new board games we picked up at Mind Games in Australia Fair and Toymate (MineCraft, Perudo, Ticket to Ride, Sushi Go). Please be patient while we get back into our paperwork this week and catch up on correspondence. Committees kick off again next week and our regular Tuesday morning drop-ins will re-commence.

07.01.2022 Home of the Arts & Griffith University Gold Coast have partnered for A better future for all tonight, with master interviewer and host Kerry O’Brien curating a discussion on medicine, arts and sociology, in the context of the #COVID19 pandemic, with some impressive subjects. Professor Nigel McMillan, Dr Rebecca Huntley and Mr Mik Auckland discussed the human side of the pandemic and how this collective experience might change society. A fascinating conversation.... https://www.griffith.edu.au/imagining-the-future

04.01.2022 ***WARNING: #proudhusband post*** This week, my wife Jude Kalman has again been named a finalist for Screen Professional of the Year at the Gold Coast Film Festival, for her work in 2020 that included; - speaking at the UN HQ in New York on Social Impact Films as a means to promoting inclusion in the context of her work with Mission Educate in Mozambique... - speaking online at the UN in Geneva on the film project and charity work of Nice Coffee Co In Kenya. - travelling to Thailand to film with Compassion Australia on one of their projects. - working with Eczema Support Australia on a film project that contributed to an amendment to the PBS worth $270million - being awarded the Graham Wade Pilgrim Media Prize at CMAA Conference 2020. - winning the Audience Choice Award in her category at Yonkers Film Festival in Yonkers, New York in a North American Premiere for her doco Uncontained Love: Love>Fear ... amongst a few other significant awesome things. She’ll be at the GC Screen Industry Gala Awards Ceremony on Thursday at Warner Bros. Movie World - Gold Coast, Australia and you can join her and celebrate, in person or online - https://www.gcfilmfestival.com//screen-industry-gala-awar/ I think she’s amazing.

04.01.2022 Over the past nine years, there is no major city project I am more excited and proud about than the development of the HOTA (Home of the Arts) precinct. The outdoor stage, bridge, and the new gallery represent a collective city asset I am convinced locals will be incredibly proud of, and cultural tourists will be compelled to visit. It is a project that has been supported with almost always unanimous support by my council colleagues, led by the Mayor, and ably administrated b...y the inimitable Criena Gehrke (CEO, HOTA). No doubt, this project has been expensive, but in the fullness of time I am confident our city investing in it's artistic heart will bring a wonderful return, not just economically (diversifying our offering to our 12 million tourists, and compelling them to stay just one more day) but also societally as the gallery and precinct inspire the next generation of creatives to deliver topical and controversial art that start important conversations about our people and our community. The new gallery opens this Saturday and you need to book to visit (even though for a few months it will be free of charge) so we can manage numbers and venue capacity. The first weekend "sold" out in 15 minutes. You can book in here - https://hota.com.au/book-your-hota-gallery-visit/ One of the pinnacle pieces in the collection is William Robinson's "Rainforest" which is said to have inspired the "voronoi" concept evident in the architecture across the precinct. Voronoi is said to represent "nature inspiring aesthetic", whereby the geometrical shapes found in things like beehives and dragonfly wings and palm tree trunks and flowers appeal to the eye and portray beauty. Sometimes we find the hinterland a little left behind in the delivery of city projects and reputation but here at the gallery it's a central part of the heart of the project. For that I am immensely proud of the designers and team. I hope residents in the Hinterland will take the time to book and visit the new Home of the Arts gallery and enjoy what is, and what will be, an amazing attraction for locals and visitors for decades to come. https://www.abc.net.au//new-gold-coast-gallery-/100121066

03.01.2022 The Gold Coast Bulletin reports today on the committee recommendation to advance the Gold Coast Cableway project between western Mudgeeraba and Springbrook. https://www.goldcoastbulletin.com.au//1624a5da43ae3311e8f8 A report authored by Urbis, commissioned by the Council, indicates an upper end construction cost of just under $200million and the expectation it may generate a $33million gross annual profit. What is not covered in the report is whether this profit would, were... it realised, be able to mitigate any impact on World Heritage listed biodiversity areas of our National Park network in the Hinterland. An updated assessment of the environmental impact possibly awaits. Frankly, much work has already been undertaken to this effect and appears to be beyond the scope of the report being considered by Council. The committee report is non-confidential (of which I am glad) and can be provided to anyone wanting to read it. Follow this link to find it - https://www.goldcoast.qld.gov.au//economy-20210512-agenda. As I have previously stated, I am all for diversifying our tourism offering on the Gold coast but I have grave reservations about the apparent environmental impact of a Cableway through World Heritage-listed areas. You can find out more about the UNESCO reports here - https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/368

02.01.2022 A few people have asked about what is going on at the corner of Franklin Drive and Somerset Drive, where a tent has been erected and meetings have been occurring on Sundays, as well as some gardens being constructed. Normally, I try to avoid getting involved with what happens on private property, if it is not obviously unlawful. In this case, there's enough public interest to clarify some of my personal views, and my understanding of relevant local legislation. I don't know S...Continue reading
