22.01.2022 A note frrom the ATO to think about: Claiming work-related expenses? Taxpayers claiming work-related expense deductions, need to satisfy the following:... - taxpayers must have spent the money and were not reimbursed - the expense must be related to their job - taxpayers must have a record to prove it. Its important to remember that if you receive an allowance from your employer, it does not automatically entitle you to a deduction. You still need to show that you have spent the money and it was related to your job. The ATO will be paying extra attention to people whose deduction claims are higher than expected, in particular: - car expenses claims including those for transporting bulky tools travel - internet and mobile phone - self-education. Please send me an e-mail if you have any questions about this [email protected]

17.01.2022 Do you operate a HOME OFFICE. Is your Home Office a "place of business" eg a workshop for a builder, a home doctors surgery. Or is it a home office where you work out of hours. Claiming Home Office Place of busines. You may claim a percentage of rent, interest, home depreciation, rates, water, insurance, repairs, cleaning, pest control, gardening, etc. based on floor area.... Claiming for Home Office where you work out of hours there are two methods: Method 1: You may claim home office electricity based on floor area e.g. 5%. x $400 (electricity bill per quarter) x 4 = $80. This area must be for the sole purpose of home office. It cannot be for multi-use e.g. dining room table. Method 2: You may use the ATO 45c per hour rate to claim electricity, gas and depreciation of furniture. You must keep a 4 week diary. E.g. 45c x 20 hours per week x 52 weeks = $468 Please contact us if you have any questions.

14.01.2022 What do the activists want? For a start, they want you to stop consuming animal products. As a professional ethicist, Im in a position to offer some small assistance in thinking about the reasonableness of that particular demand. | OPINION

10.01.2022 A message from the ATO, they are often seeing taxpayers making claims for items where they have not spent the money, the item does not relate to their work or they have not kept appropriate records. So a reminder to all clients make sure you keep appropriate records a receipt or make a diary note but make sure you have evidence to support your claim. Please send me an e-mail if you have any questions.

06.01.2022 Work-related expenses update from the ATO The ATO has a wide range of strategies in place to deal with risks relating to individuals over claiming their work-related expenses. This tax time the ATO is reminding people to: declare all your income dont claim a deduction when you didnt spend the money... dont claim a deduction for private expenses keep records to prove your claims. The ATO utilises more sophisticated risk models to scrutinise every tax return and identify individuals and tax agents making higher than expected work-related expense claims. While a larger than usual claim might be legitimate, it may cause the ATO to ask questions as part of its compliance program. See more
