25.01.2022 Tradie’s Health Month Every August is Australian Tradies National Health Month. Tradie’s Health Month is a national campaign that brings awareness to the health of our tradies. It also aims to encourage tradies to look after their wellbeing. Australian tradies make 190 serious workers’ compensation claims every day. This is 3 times the national average (according to a Safe Work Australia.) Tradies classified as technicians and trade workers, labourers, mac...hinery operators and drivers represent 58 per cent of workers’ compensation claims, despite making up only 30 per cent of the workforce. Ensuring better health of tradies can be as simple as doing some proper warm ups with your work mates before the work day begins. The health of tradies must be everyone's priority. Let’s keep Aussie tradies healthy! Visit their website for more information https://choose.physio/tradieshealth/getinvolved See more

20.01.2022 R U OK? Day How are you going? Are you okay? It is okay not to be okay.... R U OK?Day is today, Thursday 10th September 2020. It’s our national day of action when we remind Australians that every day is the day to ask, Are you OK? A question can save a life. 2020 has been a challenging year for everyone and circumstances have made it even more important for us all to stay connected and, for those who are able, be willing to support those around us. Sometimes we decide not to ask whether someone is okay, because we don’t know what to say afterwards. You don’t have to be an expert to keep the conversation going when someone says they’re not OK. Learn what to say after R U OK? Visit their website to learn more about how you can help the people in your life gain access to the support they need. Please call us on 9455 7535 to chat or book an appointment with our doctor. The team at Glenorie Village Medical Practice are here for you. https://www.ruok.org.au/join-r-u-ok-day

17.01.2022 How to properly wear a face mask to help stop the spread of COVID-19 The NSW Government is strongly encouraging greater use of masks in high-risk public settings to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. Wearing a mask is not mandatory in NSW. Wearing a mask should be considered a fourth line of defence after staying home if unwell and getting tested, maintaining 1.5-metre social distancing and good hand hygiene. Face masks are one tool utilized for preventing the sprea...d of disease. Face masks are loose-fitting masks that cover the nose and mouth, and have ear loops or ties or bands at the back of the head. You can choose to wear a disposable mask or a fabric/reusable mask. Disposable face masks should be used once and then thrown in the trash. You should also remove and replace masks when they become moist. A fabric mask can act as a barrier to prevent the spread of the virus. However, it must be used correctly and always combined with other measures to protect yourself and everyone else. The following video from the World Health Organisation (WHO) explains how to wear a face mask safely. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Tv2BVN_WTk&feature=emb_logo

12.01.2022 Asthma Week One in every nine Australians have asthma around 2.7 million of us. Asthma is a medical condition that affects the airways. Sometimes, people with asthma find it harder to breathe in and out, because the airways in their lungs become narrower like trying to breathe through a thin straw. ... At other times their breathing is normal. There is no cure for asthma, but it can usually be well controlled. For good control of asthma, you need: > medicines taken the right way, at the right time > regular medical visits for check-ups and to learn more about living with asthma > an action plan, so you know exactly what to do when symptoms happen. VISIT YOUR GP FOR AN ASTHMA REVIEW An Asthma Review is a chance for you to talk to your doctor about your asthma. You can discuss any symptoms you may be experiencing, any concerns you may have, review your asthma medication, and perhaps discuss ways to better manage your asthma. How often should you get an asthma review? > At least once per year for an adult and at least twice a year for children > If your condition has changed at all > If you are pregnant, your asthma should be reviewed every 4-6 weeks The National Asthma website is a great resource for more information about asthma: https://www.nationalasthma.org.au/understand/what-is-asthma Take this asthma control test to assist your Health Care Professional in helping you reach the best asthma control possible. Asthma Score is a way of working out your level of asthma control. https://asthma.org.au//understanding-/asthma-control-test/ Book an appointment for your asthma review by calling 9455 7535.

05.01.2022 Today is RED NOSE DAY Red Nose is Australia’s leading authority on safe sleep and pregnancy, and bereavement support for families affected by the death of a child. In Australia, nine children still die suddenly and unexpectedly every day.... That’s more than 3,000 babies, toddlers and preschoolers every year more than double the national road toll. We are still losing them to stillbirth, SIDS, and fatal sleeping accidents. So while incredible gains have been made to reduce sudden infant deaths since the first Red Nose Day in 1988, the fight must continue. Follow this link to find out more information about Red Nose Day, listen to stories from Australian families and find our how you can help! If you have any questions, call us at Glenorie Medical Centre on 9455 7535 https://rednoseday.org.au/stories/

03.01.2022 GP GENERAL HEALTH CHECK-UP It is recommended that everyone should have a general check-up with their GP every year. Part of the check-up will involve talking to your doctor about your medical history, your family’s history of disease and your lifestyle choices, such as diet, exercise habits and whether or not you smoke or drink alcohol. Your doctor may also take your blood pressure and send you for blood and urine tests. Seeing your doctor for regular medical chec...k-ups will help you stay healthy and pick up early warning signs of disease or illness. Many diseases such as cardiovascular (heart) disease, diabetes and some cancers can be picked up in their early stages, when treatment is often more effective. If you are at high risk of a particular disease for example, if you have a family history of it it is recommended that you get checked more frequently, and at an earlier age. A GP general health check-up is performed by your GP and it usually takes about 15 minutes. Women: Self checks at home: skin, diet, dental care, weight, alcohol, smoking, exercise and mental/emotional health. Screening at the GP: Cervical screening (pap test), STI, blood pressure, blood tests, ECG, weight check (BMI), Diabetes health checks, breast cancer test (mammogram), eye health checks, bowel cancer test (Faecal Occult Blood Test), bone density test (DEXA) and immunisation. Men: Self checks at home: skin, dental care, testicular self-examination Screening at the GP: blood pressure, blood test, obesity checks, ECG, diabetes checks, Bowel cancer screening, eye test, bone density screening, immunisation, STI screening This website is a fantastic resource that details the health checks you should be having, by age groups. Call us on 9455 7535 to book a bulk-billed GP health check. Glenorie Village Medical Practice is open 7 days. https://www.hcf.com.au//health-checks-by-age-the-tests-you.

02.01.2022 ATTENTION PATIENTS Below is information regarding the Covid-19 vaccination concerns released by the Department of Health this morning. What is this side effect that everyone is talking about associated with the AstraZeneca vaccine? There is evidence of a likely link between the AstraZeneca vaccine and an extremely rare blood clotting syndrome (thrombosis with thrombocytopenia).... The recommendation from the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) is that use of Comirnaty COVID-19 vaccine (Pfizer) is preferred over AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine in adults under 50 years old who have not already had a first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine. Is the AstraZeneca vaccine safe? Yes. The individual benefit-to-risk balance of vaccination with the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine varies with age. This balance is based on factors including the increased risk of complications from COVID-19 with increasing age and the potential lower risk of this very rare, but serious, adverse event with increasing age. ATAGI has recommended the AstraZeneca vaccine remains safe to be given to people aged 50 years and over. I have had my first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine, what do I do now? If you have had your first vaccine dose without this side effect or other serious adverse effects, you should receive your second dose as planned. What if I am worried about side effects? If you have recently had your first vaccine dose and are experiencing any side effects that you are worried about, I can book an appointment for you to see your doctor. I’m booked in for my first dose of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine, what do I do? If you are an adult aged under 50 years, you should only receive a first dose of AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine where the benefit of receiving the vaccine clearly outweighs the risk in your individual circumstance. You may wish to discuss your individual benefit-to-risk balance with your doctor. Generally, if you have not already received a first dose of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine, then the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine is preferred in adults aged under 50 years. Information about how to receive the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine will be available on the Department of Health website shortly. If you would like to talk about this with your doctor, please call 02 9455 7535 to make an appointment face to face or via Telehealth. If you are 50 years of age or older, you can still receive your AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine.
