25.01.2022 As China pledges zero net emissions by 2060 where does Australia stand on the issue? It is quite clear that we still do not have a solid stance on Climate Change but we can not ignore these facts. Australia is the world’s 18th largest emitter out of 210 countries. Added to that, we are only 0.3% of the world’s population! We are already not pulling our weight. Moreover, 201 countries emit less than 2%. If we all took that attitude, we would fail to limit warming to a safe l...evel. According to the Bureau of Meteorology, Australia is also warming faster than the global average and therefore especially vulnerable to climate change. It is simply in our national interest to get behind this and stop burying our heads in the sand. There is something you can do though! On Nov 9 Zali Steggall is launching a Climate Change Act as a private members bill in Parliament. It is along the lines of the UK Climate Change Act enacted by the Conservative UK government years ago. It would hold the government to account to achieve an emissions trajectory consistent with the Paris ambition of limiting the average global temperature rise to 2 degrees and ideally 1.5 degrees What Zali needs is an overwhelming display of community support for her bill. Without this the government won't allow a full debate.
