25.01.2022 So... love my coos. That’s pretty much a given. And when they aren’t doing so good, like wee Mackintosh at the moment, I will do everything I can to help him get better. He’s already on antibiotics and the first stool sample came back negative. So just collected my next round of stuff - lectade to keep his fluids up, an antibacterial injection and a container for a second stool sample to send off for further, more comprehensive testing. What’s missing though? GLOVES! No glo...ves! And I DO NOT love him enough to do that. 23.01.2022 Merged the cow and calf groups today so Mackintosh moved into the big paddock with the other babies Griogair and Willowdean. 20.01.2022 It’s been a while since we had an Astro and Atlas update. The chicks have been moved to an outside pen and have a new friend - Pluto. Pluto was one of two chicks hatched by the hen that booted Astro as a hatchling. Not sure what her problem is this time around as she is normally a really good mama, but at four weeks she basically left the chicks to fend for themselves and returned to the main henhouse. Rather than risk the chicks being harmed or taken, they were put in with ...Astro and Atlas. Unfortunately we lost the larger of the two chicks during a hot day last week. 17.01.2022 Another one addicted to cubes. My not so secret ingredient in quiet cattle. Tonight was the first time I was able to hand feed Griogair. He’s 4.5 months now and has been using the creep feeder for a few weeks, so he’s used to me hanging around. Tonight he actually checked out what I was offering instead of just trying to run away. 16.01.2022 It was crazy warm today. Crazy in that it went from a pleasant 15 with breeze yesterday to 26 today with no wind. The coos definitely felt it. About 1.30 they ended up at the corner gate so I opened it up and let them in to the paddock with the dam and gum trees. 14.01.2022 Poor lil Mac lost his fight on the weekend. He battled from the second he arrived ten days early, right to the very end. Vet said he most likely had a congenital issue but it’s not conclusive. No other temps or results to prove anything though. 14.01.2022 Ollies version of a cuddle. This is a new development. Not sure what’s going on but she she seems to like dropping her head and cuddling. There is a history of her stalking me during mating season so ... the next few weeks could be fun. When we lived in Queensland I found Ollie on the side is the road after being hit by a car. The vet assures us she was fine and would fly away but we later discovered he didn’t diagnose her broken wing. Needless to say she is a permanent fam...ily member now. We lock her cage at night so a fox doesn’t get her but during the day she is free to wander. Fun fact: the galah can live up to 80 years of age and if they are pets and the owner dies, sometimes they won’t accept food from anyone else and then starve. We have made a point of getting as many people as possible to feed her just in case. 12.01.2022 Zelda is having a Gryphon baby ... sometime soon-ish. We don’t have a confirmed date but a window of possibility. She doesn’t tend to have big calves, and she is on pasture hay and what she can find on the ground, and she is a big girl anyway. But today .... she didn’t even try to come up for a lucerne cube. 10.01.2022 This woman is AMAZING!!! I am so, so proud of Bec McLaughlin, who went to her first handlers camp with no real experience under her belt. Bec has visited the farm a few times and had some basic experience but this was her first real foray into it. And while Andie is a show veteran, she is also a determined, food driven, two year old, 518kg heifer with a mind of her own. And despite a less than well behaved heifer in the championship handling, when she was ready to give up... and said she couldn’t do it, she persevered, kept going and finished the round. Bec you should be SO PROUD of yourself. You’ve shown you CAN. 10.01.2022 Baby boy got his bling! Griogair needed to have a nose ring put in for the upcoming Royal Canberra Show. I choose to use a vet to do this. It means they get a sedative and don’t tend to react so badly. Waking up is usually a groggy affair for them. And it still takes a few weeks for them to get used to it and for it to heal correctly. 07.01.2022 Yay, the hydrangea is flowering. We didn’t get flowers last year because we had it pruned, not knowing that it only flowers on old wood (lesson one). Did you know ??? The colour of some species is Hydrangea flower is determined by the pH of the soil? So if you alter that, you can change the colour. We have an alkaline soil producing the dark pink flowers. And yet today this very dark brown egg showed up in the nesting box. The latest chicks hatched July 12. Is it possible this is from one of the babies? Or has some other bird laid in there? 04.01.2022 Not sure what happened....She hatched three and then on the third morning I woke to find two dead babies. I was a bit worried about her remaining one but figured what happens, happens. She decided she didn’t want to stay in the nursery and instead has chosen a corner patch of the chicken run under the smallest overhang. There is shelter if she needs to move. But she is doing a pretty good job with her one baby. Although ... she does sometimes forget she has a baby in her rush to get the food !!!
