20.01.2022 A beautiful Spring day for us on Sunday for our Working Bee and lots of helping hands for us as well. It was wonderful to have so many visitors join us and help with many of the tasks that needed doing a big thankyou for all your hard work. The preparation for the new Insect Hotel is full steam ahead, 18 trees and shrubs were planted, mulched and watered. Two bat boxes were installed, the native compound weeded, the Memorial Tree was weeded and watered and is doing well and b...rush cutting was undertaken near the large dam. Rubbish was removed also from the CSIRO Managers residence. Meanwhile Farah and I headed down to the large dam to undertake our usual bird survey with no sign of the Shelducks but was lovely to see the Grey Teals with 3 ducklings. To our surprise we spotted a Kangaroo at the dam we both watched it come down for a drink then I lost sight of him. Sure enough he decided it was a nice day for a swim a bit of a treat for us both. Just a reminder to everyone that the loop trail will be open later once daylight saving starts so will be open until 9pm. See more

18.01.2022 Well our last community planting day for the year at Glenthorne worked out perfectly with a lovely sunny morning and then rain mid afternoon. So great to see everyone out enjoying themselves with both the planting and the loop trail. The Friends of Glenthorne were busy finishing up planting around the Ranger Station with a little help from some of the people attending the community planting day. We will be back at Glenthorne next Sunday 20th September I’m hoping the Shelducks are still hanging around and hopefully we might have some more ducklings as well visitors are welcome see you there

15.01.2022 We were blessed with great weather for the first mid week Working bee at Glenthorne today. Thank you to the volunteers who were given an orientation before being shown the Friends working shed and then undertaking some weeding, planting of trees and ground covers as well. If anyone would like to join the mid-week group please feel free to message our page. I was able to undertake a bird survey today as well and there was certainly plenty of activity. It was great to see the Eurasian Coots who have a total of 4 babies and the Grey Teals and Pacific ducks also have ducklings. Nice to see people still enjoying the Loop Trail which is open till 9pm. Hope you enjoy the photos

14.01.2022 Great opportunity to ask the Environment Minister what will be happening next in the Masterplan for Glenthorne

13.01.2022 Great to see the sun come out for our Enjoyment day with plenty of tasks to catch up on and looking forward to doing our bird surveys. What a wonderful surprise it was to find both a male and a female Shelduck on the dam. According to Alan this is the only the second time they have been seen at Glenthorne. Another surprise was Musk Lorikeets using the nest boxes that the Friends of Glenthorne had made and put up several months ago. Mind you later Rainbow Lorikeets were also f...ound checking it out so will be interesting to see who moves in first. Martin was busy deciding where to put his new insect hotel and it was great to see lots of people enjoying the loop trail around Glenthorne it’s a good way to see the future of the park and keep fit at the same time. A big thankyou to Kath who planted one of her Grey box and engraved a plaque for Dave Walsh who was a big supporter of Glenthorne. Lots happening behind the scenes and look forward to keeping everyone up to date on the next exciting development at Glenthorne. See more

11.01.2022 COMING EVENTS. The Friends of Glenthorne are excited to advise that this coming Wednesday, at our AGM, we have as guest speaker, renowned Gardening Australia presenter, Sophie Thomson. Sophie has just had another very successful weekend with her Sophie's Patch fundraiser, with visitors coming from as far away as Renmark. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, pl...ease check our web site for registration details and you will have to sign in at the door. Sophie's addresses are extremely popular and the church can hold over 80 people under Covid-19 restrictions, so please come along and bring a friend. Tea and coffee will be served after the AGM. Also this Sunday we will be back at the farm, assisting Assoc Prof David Paton to remove tree guards from his patch on the eastern side of the property. There will be other activities to help with, so please meet in the Ranger Station car park this Sunday from 10.00am. I hope to see you at either or both events. See more

09.01.2022 Many of our supporters have said that the 3rd Sunday of the month doesn’t necessarily suit them to come and help us at our Working Bees. So as of a fortnight ago we have been trialling Wednesday from 9-12 to see how things go. We have undertaken various activities and all seems to be working well so if anyone would like to join us we meet at the Ranger Station around 8:45 and have a chat about what needs to be done. You can contact us via the Facebook page to let us know your... coming or you have any questions. Don’t forget to book yourself in for our AGM via the Friends of Glenthorne page under Events on Wed November 18th from 7-9:30 with our speaker for the night Sophie Thomson from Gardening Australia should be a great night. The helicopter photo was from last weeks Working Bee thought it was hovering a bit low when in actual fact they were checking out the power lines around Glenthorne See more

08.01.2022 We are all excited about the new Glenthorne National Park Ityamaiitpinna Yarta developing before our eyes. Planting days have been held and great plans are being developed for the coming couple of years. It is of the utmost importance that the National Park is created using the best available science. Nothing less will suffice. That the revegetation is created using smart techniques previously trialed in other areas. This is why a recent visit to a number of SA Water sites ar...ound Adelaide has been so important and beneficial. Shaun Kennedy from SA Water is using cutting edge techniques and large scale trials to bring back habitat across large areas, habitat which has been lost around the State. Controlling the weeds is the crucial first step and mass plantings of a variety of grassland species (not just native grasses but also daisies, lilies, and many other beautiful species) in high nutrient soils is the next. Getting this process right is difficult and varies across the different sites, but I am sure you will agree, the results are outstanding, almost breath-taking. Full credit to Shaun who deserves high praise for his outstanding results which have been developed in conjunction with not-for-profit revegetation experts, Seeding Natives Inc. Shaun has been brave and although there have been lessons learnt the hard way, there is important knowledge being discovered that will hopefully be used at Glenthorne in coming months. The SA Water sites are restricted to the public, so more the importance of replicating these results at Glenthorne and beyond for everyone to enjoy in the next few years. I for one will want these local native plants in my garden to attract native insects, bees and birds. It is efforts like Shaun's, against established advice that it won't work and which develops new techniques, which gives me inspiration and does my heart good in such difficult times. Thankyou Shaun and SA Water for your efforts. See more

04.01.2022 So wonderful to have so many visitors yesterday for not only the tree planting but others coming along just to check out the new loop trail as well. We couldn’t have asked for a better day with the sun shining all day. So many wonderful photos taken and great memories thanks Farah for all your great photos with just a few of my own. Please remember the loop trail is now open from 8am to 7pm for you to enjoy feel free to let us know what you think

03.01.2022 It seems Spring is definitely in the air at Glenthorne and I was lucky to be able to do a bird survey something which has only ever been done on our Enjoyment Days. It was interesting to take my time and just sit and observe the birds for a while and there was certainly plenty of activity. I was very happy to see our first ducklings for Glenthorne this season there were 9 all up with Mum and Dad being very protective. There was an unusual occurrence of the Rainbow Lorikeets digging holes in the bottom of the Willow Tree something I haven’t seen before. I also did another walk of the loop trail while I was there and enjoyed the beautiful views from the top of the hill it’s great to think about how different Glenthorne will look in the future so much to look forward too.

02.01.2022 After last night's rain (Sunday 4th October), what better way to spend the morning of a public holiday - walking the new Glenthorne National Park Ityamaiitpinna Yarta. There were 3 families of ducks and their chicks enjoying the sunshine. Of special note were the Shelducks who have made Glenthorne their home this year and today with ten chicks in tow on the large dam, they were in no mood for Grey Teal ducks, who were given a very definite send off when they ventured too close. Let's hope the local foxes get the same treatment. A wonderful place for a walk amongst nature.

02.01.2022 What a fantastic day it was for our planting day a couple of weeks ago perfect weather and great community support. For those who asked about how they could contribute more to Glenthorne we are happy to say that the Friends of Glenthorne will be having their usual Enjoyment Day this Sunday August 16th. We will be undertaking tasks including brush cutting, weeding of the native compound, planting of the Grey box trees and for the birders in the group we are really looking forward to doing our first bird survey for some time. For those who wish to join us we will be meeting at the Ranger Station gate at 9:45-10:00. Due to Covid restrictions you will need to bring both your drinks and lunch. If you have any questions or just to tell us you will be attending feel free to send us a message I look forward to seeing you there.
