24.01.2022 Why feed roughage? Roughage and fibre play an important role in the health of the horse. This is predominantly due to hind gut health. The digestive system of horses has been adapted to consume large amounts of fibre (i.e. grass/hay), with horses in the wild spending 16 o 18 hours a day grazing. The critical reason is hind gut health. The digestive system of horses has been adapted to consume large amounts of roughage (such as hay).... As a general rule, horses eat around 2% of their body weight daily. So, a 500kg horse needs 10kg daily. The mix of concentrate to roughage depends on the level of work. Rhodes Grass hay is an ideal fibre source for horses in light to moderate work. It is low sugar, making it perfect for laminitic or insulin resistant horses and ponies. Now available from various WA stock feeds!
