24.01.2022 We are all facing very different times with the onset of COVID19 across the World. Rural Fire Service Volunteers have been advised/instructed to follow the same health rules and restrictions as applies to all members of the public. I.E. Brigade personnel can/will not have - Brigade Meetings; Brigade Training Sessions; Participate in Hazard Reduction Burns; Or any Non Essential Activities requiring more than one person. Does this mean Glenwood Residents are not protected ...should a fire emergency occur ?? - NO IT DOES NOT !!!! Should a FIRE EMERGENCY occur - All available Volunteer Rural Fire Personnel will attend and if required We will be supported by Permanent Fire Service staff and appliances. All firefighters of course will be wearing additional protective apparel for COVID1.9. I would ask should a fire emergency occur please stay at home it will be safer for all of us. We will keep you informed of the outcomes as is necessary. Permits to Light Fire are still being issued; Wherever possible they will be provided electronically. Keep you and yours safe during these uncertain times !! DickIrwin Officer/Fire Warden Glenwood RFB
22.01.2022 HQ Plantations have advised they will be burning a large number of stacks over the coming week, in an area previously known as Taurus Yards. This area is almost due East of the Glenwood residential area and North of Neerdie Road. It will not present a fire risk to Glenwood residents. With Westerly wind forecast for the next several days smoke impact will also be minimised. Regards Dick Irwin AFSM Officer/Fire Warden

21.01.2022 FIRE BAN EXTENDED TO 07:00 AM 13TH JANUARY 2020. For further information providing restrictions go to - www.ruralfire.qld.gov.au Dick Irwin AFSM. Officer/ Fire Warden Glenwood RFB
19.01.2022 Good Morning All, The Brigade Volunteers will be carrying at a fuel reduction burn of approximately 30 acres this Saturday 15th August, 2020. The fuel reduction area is bounded by Arbor 22 to the South, Arbor 29 to the West and a section of State Forest to the North. A Northerly wind of 10 - 13 klms per hr is currently forecast. Residents to the South and West of the burn area may/will be affected by smoke from this fuel reduction burn possibly into Sunday, subject to cont...inued internal burning. This burn is apart of the Brigades strategic burn plan to minimise the risk to residents and other landholders, by reducing fuel loads in a mosaic pattern across the area. This assists in reducing fire intensity in those areas, even when fire danger levels are in the extreme range. This methodology minimises the risk to firefighters and reduces the forward rate of spread of the fire especially in heavily timbered country, by reducing the available ground fuel which reduces crown fires to a minimum, in turn reducing ember attack or spotting which is synonymous with large scale uncontrollable fires. Each resident plays a critical part in this methodology by the regular management and reduction of vegetation within their property boundaries. There will always be fire in the landscape. We all [including government] have the knowledge and the ability to reduce the threat of wild fire to a minimum, there just needs to be the will to go with the skills. Keep Safe. Regards Dick Irwin AFSM Officer/Fire Warden
17.01.2022 The Fire Ban was lifted for the Regional Council areas of Gympie and Fraser Coast at Midday 20th January 2020. Thank you to residents for your assistance during the dry, keeping us free from any serious fires. If Michelin Stars were awarded for responsible fire management, Glenwood Residents would have to get 5 stars. ... Eventhough there were a few who ignored- forgot -didn't know - didn't recognize - the seriousness of the conditions, you the community were quick to assist in passing on the message. So you would still get 5 stars from me. Remember fire permits are required for areas greater than 2 meters in any one single direction and make sure you have equipment to extinguish the fire if necessary. As there are still some areas in the estate that will burn very fiercely, it is important we still ensure we make sure any fires we light cannot escape from the area planned. We have a great team of Brigade Members helping to keep our community safe, but this is made so much easier by having a community team that cares as well. On behalf of the Brigade Thank You. Dick Irwin AFSM Officer/ Fire Warden
15.01.2022 Following a recent inspection of the residential areas of Glenwood, I provided FCR Council with a list of properties that are presenting a severe fire risk to adjoining and adjacent residents. Council has issued notices on these absentee landholders under its subordinate Local Laws relating to overgrown allotments. I am preparing a further list for Council, to ensure the risk of bush fires are reduced as much as possible for residents, prior to the onset of the coming fire... season which generally starts in August, less than 6 weeks away. Properties that present the greatest risk have generally three/four levels of unmaintained vegetation. Consisting of a substantial ground cover of leaves with branches up to 25mm in diameter; a continuous body of dry grass above 500mm in height or a mixture of both; combined with a medium coverage of brush regrowth such as wattle etc up to 6+ meters in height. This brush regrowth is referred to as ladder fuel, completing the perfect continuum necessary for a fire to crown, i.e. flames reaching and igniting the tops or the crown of mature trees, the fourth level. This type of environment is a time bomb just waiting for severe fire weather conditions to occur. So now is the time to start cleaning up excess vegetation and disposing of unwanted materials around your property, that could present an added fire risk especially when temperatures begin to rise. If you need some assistance or advice in disposing of any excess vegetation by the use of fire, or you are concerned that you have land next to you, like I have described above, please contact me via email - [email protected] or mobile 0428 718 578. Keep Safe. Dick Irwin AFSM Officer/Fire Warden
15.01.2022 Due to the continuing dry the FIRE BAN HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO 07:00AM 27TH. JANUARY 2020. Thank you for your continued co operation and assistance over this extended period of dry weather. I know it is of little consolation, but there have been severe drys [droughts] throughout this region in 1950-51, 1967-69, 1990-92-94. All of which were accompanied by substantial and serious fires causing some loss and hardship to residents, but NO ONE lost their homes to bushfire. Accordi...ng to records of the Regional Office of the Rural Fire Service Maryborough where record keeping commenced in 1994, the NIL houses lost to bush fires has continued. I believe this is attributed to regular ground and low to mid level fuel reduction by prescription and housing not adjacent to large areas of national parks, which in the last 20 years Parks and Wildlife have struggled to keep vegetation fuel loads at manageable levels should a fire occur. Prescription Burning is exactly that, it is burning for a prescribed reason, to a prescribed plan, with a prescribed outcome and benefit. I am gravely concerned by what interstate fire Commissioners are saying, Fuel Reduction has little effect on the behaviour, management and outcomes of an unplanned vegetation fire, in the Australian landscape, It is not the Panacea, and that these comments will be be grossly misinterpreted. Agreed Hazard Reduction Burning does not stop fires from occurring or even spreading, but on ground scientific research and measurement, proves it reduces the intensity of a fire, it may even reduce the forward rate of spread and it certainly is easier to control and extinguish and for those of us on the ground who have to face that wall of flame, we know the benefits, no ifs or buts. A NSW Parliament Joint Select Committee on Bushfires, Report on the Inquiry into the 2001-02 bushfires: Findings reported the irrefutable benefits of reduced fuel loads especially during dry or drought periods. High temperatures, hot dry winds and dry vegetation are synonymous with these periods. This inquiry included the same areas of land which just recently burnt and again causing even more heartache and destruction. Even before European settlement there were fires and I guess there always will be. It is how we manage this perpetuating fuel load that provides the energy for such fires. That is of course if we want to ensure that history doesn’t keep on repeating itself. Regards Dick Irwin AFSM Officer/Fire Warden
14.01.2022 At this time THE STATE OF FIRE EMERGENCY has been lifted for Fraser Coast and Gympie Regional Council Areas. A FIRE BAN is still in place for both Council Areas. THIS CURRENT FIRE BAN will apply until MIDNIGHT SUNDAY 8th DECEMBER 2019, or until further notice. For further information relating to the FIRE BAN AND THE CURRENT RESTRICTIONS please go to www.ruralfire.qld.gov.au I take this opportunity on behalf of the Volunteers of Glenwood RFB to thank all residents fo...r their exemplary actions, which has prevented any serious threat of fire to Glenwood and our adjoining communities. With conditions continuing to remain critical, it is extremely important we as a community continue with the same level of vigilance and thoughtfulness that has kept us all fire safe to this point. Due to the many fires that have occurred during October, many of our adjoining Brigades have travelled away and assisted as support personnel at these fires. Due to our large residential area, the Fire Officers of Glenwood have elected not to travel away but to remain on call, providing a quicker response to the incident, which is critical under these current fire conditions. A large percentage of our Firefighters work away during daylight hours, therefore it is most important our community is not left unprotected during these times. This doesn’t mean we are not supporting our adjoining communities, as I write this two Glenwood personnel are on their way to Curra with our tanker to assist at a shed fire. Should there be residents [male and female] who are fit, willing to learn about managing fires and have some time available, we would be more than happy to have you as part of the team. Again thank you for your help in keeping your community and others fire safe. Regards Dick Irwin AFSM Officer/Fire Warden Glenwood RFB.

09.01.2022 Hi All, I hope you have been able to find many positives to offset the physical and travel restrictions that have been put in place to help contain and prevent the rampant spread of COVID19. From many of the facebook/twitter/++ posts we are pretty innovative lot and are making the most of a negative happening. Brigade Volunteers have been unable to carry out hazard reduction burns during this time, but we are now back in business to help residents reduce or remove some of th...e fire risks on their properties. There is a backlog of requests so please be patient with us and we will get to assist as soon as we can. I have requested FCRC to issue notices on a number of blocks belonging to absentee landholders south and east of Neerdie road. Council responded quickly to this request. These allotments were placing adjoining residents at great risk. I will continue to request this of Council in readiness for high fire danger times. Take care and continue to be positive and helpful to each other. Regards Dick Irwin
