07.01.2022 MAJOR FLOOD WARNING FOR THE BARRON RIVER Issued at 10:14 am EST on Tuesday 27 March 2018 Flood Warning Number: 8 River levels are expected to remain high along ...the lower Barron River during Tuesday as floodwater from the Tablelands moves downstream. Highest levels on the lower Barron River since 2000. Rainfall totals up to 360 mm were recorded in the lower parts of the catchment around Barron Falls in the 24 hours to 9:00 am Monday. Further rainfall of 120-240 mm was been recorded in the upper and middle parts of the catchment in the 24 hours to 9:00 am Tuesday, with the majority falling within a few hours during Monday evening. Further significant rainfall isn't expected for the next few days. Barron River to Tinaroo Dam: River levels are generally easing along the Barron River upstream of Tinaroo Dam. Inflows into the dam are expected to continue for the remainder of Tuesday Barron River downstream of Tinaroo Dam to Barron Falls: Major flood levels have peaked around 12 metres on the Barron River at Bilwon Tuesday morning with the flood peak expected to reach Myola during early Tuesday afternoon. Barron River downstream of Barron Falls: Moderate to major flooding is expected to continue along the Barron River downstream of Barron Falls during Tuesday as upstream floodwaters arrive. River level observations at Kamerunga Bridge are unavailable. Based on upstream river levels, moderate flood levels are expected to be easing during Tuesday morning. The Barron River at Kamerunga Bridge is expected to have peaked around 8.2 metres during Tuesday morning. This level is above the peak recorded in March 2008 (7.94 m) but below the record flood level of March 1977 (9.80 m). Renewed rises are likely during Tuesday afternoon as the flood peak from the Barron River Tablelands arrives. Peak predictions will be provided once upstream peaks are recorded. The Barron River at Cairns Airport recorded an initial peak of 3.13 metres around 08:00 am Tuesday 27 March and is currently at 2.93 metres and falling. The river level at Cairns Airport is expected to remain above the moderate flood level (2.50 m) during Tuesday with renewed rises likely during Tuesday afternoon as the flood peak from the Barron River Tablelands arrives. Peak predictions will be provided once upstream peaks are recorded. Flood Safety Advice: Remember: If it's flooded, forget it. For flood emergency assistance contact the SES on 132 500.
