23.01.2022 "A SEALED UNIT or FILLED FOR LIFE" Part 3 Question 2: Is the fluid really that good? In my opinion, from experience, yes fluid quality has greatly improved, but has it improved enough to not require changing.... Answer - NO! There are many things that can contaminate the fluid, heat being the primary cause of the fluids ability to perform as intended. Quote As a rule of thumb, for every 15 degrees increase of operating temp above 80 degrees C cuts the fluid life in half. Unquote. Most cars engine operating temp is around 100 degrees C, and most automatic transmissions are only cooled by a heat exchanger somewhere in the cooling system. Simple math would conclude the fluid life is already compromised. To be continued #filledforlife #sealedunit #servicemytransmission

20.01.2022 "A SEALED UNIT or FILLED FOR LIFE" In the previous post we asked some questions related to "Sealed Units of Filled for Life". Question - Does that mean the transmission can't have the fluid changed, checked, or be serviced? The short answer, all transmissions can have the fluid changed, checked and be serviced.... The long explanation- All transmissions have a drain, fill and check point. However these points can all be in separate locations or combined drain and check with separate fill point or all points in one location. Refilling with the correct fluid is critical for the correct operation of the transmission. The fluid, to be checked correctly, has to be inside a relatively small but specific temperature range. Failure to have the fluid in the correct temperature range can cause either an overfull or a low oil level condition. Both conditions can cause damage to the transmission. #filledforlife #sealedunit #servicemytransmission

12.01.2022 2 parts become one. 1st valve body assembled and ready to be fitted to the transmission.

08.01.2022 Here are some photos of a monumental gear set failure from a transmission we recently dismantled. On the road test before removing the pan for inspection, there were no abnormal noises or anything to indicate the severity of the problem. The only thing noted was, no 2nd and no 5th gear. In this situation it was most likely caused from a fractured tooth from one of the gears. But it also can happen from lubrication issues when the transmission fluid quality is degraded by heat, age and fine particles from normal wear and tear. Preventative maintenance as in, regular transmission servicing, fitting an auxiliary oil cooler will help to avoid expensive repairs like this one.

03.01.2022 "A SEALED UNIT or FILLED FOR LIFE" A statement constantly being thrown around by automotive manufacturers, dealers and salesmen. Normally it concerns the automatic transmission. What does it mean for you, the car owner? 1. Does that mean the transmission can't have the fluid changed, checked, or be serviced?... 2. Is the fluid really that good? 3. How long is life, does it mean 1, 5, 10, 20 years? 4. What if I want to have my transmission serviced? 5. What if I don't have my transmission serviced? These are some of the questions that the car owner who wishes to keep their vehicle operating correctly needs to ask. Fluids, oils etc, specifically transmission fluids have become a highly complex formula of ingredients and additives, blended to have specific characteristics s in the transmission they formulated for. With older mineral based fluids, heat damage, age, water contamination was easily identified during a regular oil level check. The colour of the fluid was a good indicator. With new synthetic blends, while colour will indicate old or heat damage, water contamination or break down of the fluid additives is not always indicated by fluid colour. Add to that problem, on most newer transmissions there is no dipstick, so just checking the fluid level or condition is not straight forward. Dipsticks and tubes have been removed by manufacturers for many reasons including -Reducing the possibility of the incorrect fluid being added to the transmission. Adding the incorrect fluid can have catastrophic results, ending in very expensive repair bills. -Reducing points for fluid leaks. -Cost of manufacture. We will look at this in more detail in future posts. #filledforlife #sealedunit #servicemytransmission

02.01.2022 Finally, number 1 valve body, transmission, engine and body all get together. Works absolutely magic. #performance #Autotransmission #chapmansoffroadracing
