22.01.2022 LEDs Used to Help Babies with Severe Jaundice Light-emitting diodes (LED) not only use less energy, they give off better light than those compact fluorescents, without using mercury. Add to the list: LEDs also are being used to help babies born with severe jaundice, which can lead to brain damage and death. The first baby treated using LEDs is named, appropriately, "Hope." According to the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the technology is called D-Rev's Bril...liance device. It was used in a neonatal care intensive unit in Ogbomoso, Nigeria. The baby had been diagnosed with severe jaundice and needed an exchange blood transfusion to prevent brain damage or death. But a local doctor was unwilling to do a tranfusion, due to the baby's low birth weight of 2.6 pounds. Hope slept one night under Brilliance, however, and no longer required a transfusion, USAID officials report. Severe jaundice is a fairly common problem worldwide, affecting more than 1 in 10 newborns. This device has been around a couple of years, but was just highlighted recently by the usa.gov blog. D-Rev, the California company that makes the Brilliance device, says jaundice is the No. 1 reason why newborns are admitted to hospitals worldwide. But if detected early enough, jaundice can be treated with 2-3 days of blue light on a baby's skin. The Brilliance devices are being sold at a low cost, about $400, to make blue phototherapy treatment available at public hospitals in India and low-income countries. Written By Brilliant. 11.01.2022 LUX Magazine: 29/11/12 "Authorities seek to root out shock risk LED tubes." http://www.luxmagazine.co.uk/news/17/led-tubes... 29 November 2012 LED tubes from five manufacturers have been banned or recalled by authorities in the EU this year because they posed a risk of electric shock. Finnish authorities ordered recalls on three LED tube products in the space of five weeks, while Germany banned one in April and the UK ordered a temporary ban on another in August. The brands affected were Limic, Ledtek, Eneltec, Winled (which also had another LED tube recalled last year) and Iled. All were made in China. The safety concerns arose mostly from inadequate insulation between live and accessible metal parts. In the case of the Limic product, both ends became live when just one was inserted into a fitting. Additionally, Havells-Sylvania voluntarily recalled 705 units of its ToLEDo LED tube product in the UK in October, due to a fault that introduced a risk of electric shock. All were recovered. Various other LED light products were also subject to compulsory recalls this year, including four lamps from LED Energie.

01.01.2022 Three California Cities Go Green with Efficient Lighting Three cities including Yucca Valley in San Bernardino County's Morongo Basin, Goleta on the Santa Barbara coast, and South Lake Tahoe in Eldorado County have made full use of a California Energy Commission program to help spread municipal use of better lighting. In Yucca Valley, the CEC helped the city replace more than 1,000 older fluorescent lights and their ballasts with more efficient "T8" tubes, which can reduce e...nergy consumption by up to 5 watts per bulb. The city also replaced lighting in exit signs with LED bulbs. The upgrades were done in the city's Community Development Building, Community Center, Town Hall, Museum, and Senior Center. Goleta got new T8 fluorescents and LED exit signs at its City Hall and four local schools, and occupancy sensors to shut off some of the fluorescent lights when no one is in the room. The coastal town now also sports 84 new LED streetlights. South Lake Tahoe, astride the California-Nevada line on the south shore of the Sierra Nevada's jewel-like lake, now also has new T8 and LED lights and occupancy sensors throughout its city buildings. The upgrades in the three cities are expected to save more than 380,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity per year and reduce California's annual contribution to the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere by 132 tons. The projects completed earlier this year, were partially funded by through an Energy Efficient Conservation Block Grant of the U.S. Department of Energy under the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act. Administered by the California Energy Commission, the federal grants are contributing to the energy efficiency goals of small cities and counties.
