22.01.2022 We are Celebrating 18 years in business

20.01.2022 There's allot of information around about crypto-currencies of late and we certainly are getting asked for more advice. This is a two second version of what the hype is about its non-technical and very basic. You may have heard about the rapid growth in value for the bit coin, especially stories such as if you purchased $100 ... worth of bitcoin in 2007 it’s now worth ~$300M (of course no one did and if they did would have cashed out by now) Block Chain Technology Bitcoin is the currency, BlockChain is the technology it uses. BlockChain is a technology that records every (EVERY) transaction of every coin. There are only 21M bitcoins in the world. Eg: Bob pays Jane 1 coin that transaction is recorded for ever for everyone to see. Imagine knowing where every dollar bill is and where its been. This ensures there’s no counterfeiting among other things. They are now looking at BlockChains in many other industries. It’s a growing area in technology at the moment. Bitcoin Lots of information on the internet, but its essentially electronic cash with no borders. Its become the stable diet for the darknet (extortion and all the bad stuff) ie: people who release encrpto virus’s on the world use bitcoin. However its becoming/became - depending who you talk to - as the standard in more reputable circles too. Mining You can collect bitcoins (or fractions of bitcoins) by mining. Every transaction incurs a transaction fee. Miners (a computer program running on a computer) search through the volumes of transactions and pluck out the transaction fees. In return they are also keeping the entire network running. Crypto-Currencies With the rise of the bit coin, other currencies have come to the surface. Each with their story and promise and each trying to be credible. There’s lots of misinformation in order to get people to invest into these currencies. This is today’s version of the prince in Nigeria wanting your bank details so he can transfer his millions into your account. (this is of course my opinion which is of an IT professional as opposed to a financial adviser) The bitcoin is different in that it’s a real currency because goods and services are being traded for coins. (at least at the moment) Many of these crypto-currencies are merely investment plans pay them wait for increase and collect your money later. (of course im not suggesting invest in the Bitcoin, merely to be cautious)

09.01.2022 , In the old days data/network security was just an IT issue, today we know better and really do need your help so together we can mitigate the security issues. ... There’s multiple threats from all sorts of ways, many ingenious. You wouldn’t believe the cyber wars that’s occurring. We no longer just have the hacker in the bottom basement living with his parents living off pizza and cokecola. We have profession direct marketing companies using technology exploits to obtain funds or information fraudulently. It’s very organised and automated and everything in between. There’s even special search engines that shows all the buildings/webcams/vulnerabilities of devices around the world for easy pickings ’ 1. Storing your website passwords in Chrome, Firefox, etc is a gold mine for hackers/Trojans to search and grab especially if you don’t have a master password. Especially if they are sync’ed with an internet account. 2. Don’t use the same password (or variation) across different systems/providers. Just takes one system to be compromised. (or at least don’t mix secure with insecure systems. Ie: Your bank password with say your facebook password.) 3. Don’t open attachments that look suspicious if not sure forward it to IT. 4. Don’t install extensions/widgets/applications from the internet many collect information/or have back doors into the system. 5. Don’t save passwords on PostIt Notes. It’s in the 101 hackers hand book. 6. Don’t use any personal email accounts to store company information. Use the business email address. 7. Don’t share your password. 8. Keep the data within business systems where ever possible. If IT don’t know about it they'll probably aren’t protecting it/backing it up. ’ 1. Run it by IT if you need more software installed , they'll be more than happy to help im sure. 2. Run it by IT if you think you have a suspect email or website else if you know its suspect then delete it :-) 3. Be sceptical of emails, websites, widgets, extensions, apps 4. Trust your gut. If its too good to be true its probably not. 5. Ask lots of questions more discussion so we all become more aware. 6. Bring it up - if you getting prompts about say about antivirus, or patches needing to be updated or getting errors 1. Don’t panic and check with your IT they’ll verify and qualify if it’s an attack. Until then it’s not an attack. I think it’s important to mention that. 2. If you think your computer is compromised (eg: all your icons are changing or all your files are disappearing, lots of popup messages ) immediately turn off the computer ie: unplug from the power and call IT. 3. Depending on the nature of the attack, will depend on what the exact actions we’ll take. Very very worst case I expect IT we’ll shutdown internet/servers. Hope that helps.

04.01.2022 From everyone from GTS we’d like to thank you for your support and we wish you and your family a safe and happy Christmas and prosperous new year.

03.01.2022 Some of the common mistakes when it comes to passwords 1. Of course its easy to have one password for everything, but one compromise means you'll given access to the kingdom.... We recommend at least three different passwords. a) One for high security such as banking etc. b) second for your emails, and other private personal accounts c) third least secure such as on-line shopping etc 2. Hacker all know that changing a single character in a password say from 14 to 15 is the oldest trick. They are also aware that many passwords end with ! and start with capitals. Non-alphanumeric characters should be used within the password. . Names such as loved one, relatives, celebrities, sports teams, pets etc are far easier to crack that you may realise. Social networks makes this information easy for hackers to harvest. Yoda123! may seem unlikely but is a common patten. Random set of characters is key. . Avoid it. Sharing a password doesn't mean the person you've shared it with will adhere to good security/protection practices . Once computers weren't powerful enough to brute force crack password of say 6 letters, now they can. Think 12 letters minimum. . Bad idea. People storing passwords, in emails, or spreadsheets is far from safe. When ever a computers is compromise, the first thing they look for is password lists. . The password 1qaz2wsx3edc may look random, but its really a pattern of keystrokes which is also looked for. . This used to work eg: p@33w0rd or spr1ngstr33t. Its now not consider safe.

02.01.2022 Unfortunately yes Yahoo has been hacked - this is the second time - that we know of. There's a suggestion that our data has been sold (several times) for US$300,000 on the black market (darkweb). If you had any banking passwords in your yahoo emails, it goes without saying to change your banking passwords. Also if your using the same or similar password for other accounts, then change the passwords to those accounts asap. ... Unfortunately, changing your Yahoo password isnt really going to help while Yahoo dont address the issues. Meanwhile expect an increase in SPAM (encrypto type emails), and not just to your yahoo account but to any/all accounts that have emailed your yahoo email.
