22.01.2022 Our thoughts are with India today, following the sad news that a residential building in Mumbai collapsed killing at least 10 people with rescuers still looking for more trapped residents. In an amazing act of community, locals have formed a giant chain stretching through the tiny laneways and streets as rescuers have struggled to reach the site of building collapse. The human chain has been passing supplies and necessary rescue materials as well as helping to remove debris https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-49001456

20.01.2022 Hello everyone, we apologise for the lack of posting recently (weve been busy with assignments and exam preparation). But, dont worry! Well be back to normal in a couple of weeks with more stories for you.

18.01.2022 Following on from last weeks post we wanted to explore modern, Western medicine in India this week. In Bangalore there is a world-renowned centre of cardiology, Narayana Hrudayalya, or Health, one of the worlds largest cardiac centres which has performed more paediatric heart surgeries than any other institution in the world. Narayana Health sees hundreds of patients and performs nearly 40 heart surgeries on children alone per day. As discussed last week the Indian public ...health system is incredibly underfunded and services are difficult for people from low socio-economic and rural areas. However, this is a health service "built for the poor" and half of the patients presenting to Narayana Health receive free or subsidised care. The founder of the health service, Dr. Devi Shetty uses a range of methods to keep costs low and to streamline care, such as training local manufactures to make hospital gowns, training family members to provide basic medical care at home and utilising a production-line approach to surgery to create an extremely efficient operating theatre. Dr. Shetty says "This is the power of not having money. When you have money in the bank, your brain stops working". If youre interested in healthcare economics check out: https://www.commonwealthfund.org//expanding-access-low-cos Or to take a look at Dr. Shettys impressive list of accolades check out his Wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devi_Shetty

GVP is not just about providing medical care, its about empowering the children to learn about health literacy and how to look after their bodies." Come and find out more - Monday the 26th at 5pm

16.01.2022 Good evening everyone and welcome back to semester 2! We hope everyone had a wonderful break. We have big things planned this semester, and stay tuned for our information session about the upcoming India trip later in the semester ... This week to kick-start our posts on ancient and modern medicine in India we will share the story of Sushruta - otherwise known as the Father of Surgery. A common misconception of the "plastic" in "plastic surgery" is that it refers to artifci...al materal however it is actually derived from the Greek word, plastikos, which means "to mould" or "to give form". During the 6th Century BCE, the Indian doctor Sushruta wrote one of the worlds first works on medicine and surgery, the Sushruta Samhita. This documented treatment for more than 1000 diseases. He also listed instructions for performing surgical procedures, including plastic surgery, such as skin grafts and nose reconstruction. Sushruta provided the first written record of a forehead flap rhinoplasty, where a full-thickness piece of skin from the forehead is used to reconstruct a nose. This was used to reconstruct noses cut off as punishment and incredibly, over 1000 years later, this technique is still used today (but generally for different reasons)

09.01.2022 This week we wanted to have a look at Ayurvedic medicine (or Ayurveda) which is a traditional Indian approach to health that is over 3,000 years old! Those who practice Ayurveda believe every person is made up of five basic elements: space, air, fire, water and earth and these combine in the human body to form three life forces, or energies, called doshas. These doshas are Vata dosha (space and air), Pitta dosha (fire and water) and Kapha dosha (water and earth). Everyone h...as a unique mix of the three, but one dosha is usually stronger than the others and they control how your body works and the health issues that you are susceptible to. Vata dosha is believed to be the most powerful and controls many of your basic body functions like breathing and blood flow. Pitta dosha controls your digestion and metabolism. Kahpa dosha controls strength, weight and the immune system. In Western medicine, Ayurveda is viewed as complementary or alternative medicine but many of their health messages are similar - like avoiding lots of sweet foods, minimising stress, keeping to natural circadian rhythms, and good hygiene. You can find out which dosha you are by taking this quiz! https://www.pukkaherbs.com/our-mission/ayurveda/dosha-quiz/

08.01.2022 Good evening everyone! This week we have a link to an article about the work of Dr. Pawan Sinha. He is a professor of vision and computational neuroscience at MIT in the U.S.. In the early 2000s when visiting his family in India, Dr. Sinha was shocked to see the high numbers of childhood blindness. India, with its large population, is home to approximately 700,000 children who are blind. The causes of blindness are often treatable or preventable. He started an organisati...on, Project Prakash, which aims to provide eye health promotion to rural villages, and free sight treatment for children whose family would not normally be able to afford it. Dr Sinha also combined his interest in global health with his passion for science. For certain children with congenital blindness, Dr. Sinha set out to find out what "people cured of blindness see" and how the brain adapts after vision surgery. Before his research no one really knew the answer to whether at a certain age, after being blind their entire life, would a child or adolescent be able to recover sight? Would the brain be able to process information coming in from newly functioning eyes or would years of darkness have put a stop to it? Check out the article to see some of his findings: https://www.newyorker.com//anna/people-cured-blindness-see

07.01.2022 Here at GVP we hope youre all enjoying a well-deserved break and have found some time to relax Yoga is a great way to unwind and calm your mind and relax your body. Did you know that the development of yoga in India can be traced back to 5,000 years ago but some researchers think it may be up to 10,000 years old! What may spring to mind when you think of yoga is probably Hatha Yoga, which focuses on a series of asanas, or postures, with little emphasis on the spiritual s...ide of things. The yoga practiced 5,000 years ago was very different and has been constantly evolving ever since. The first yoga practiced was meant largely for spiritual and religious reasons and for meditation. For more information check out : https://www.yogabasics.com/learn/history-of-yoga/ To try some relaxing yoga check out the video below : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nw2oBIrQGLo

05.01.2022 Hello everyone. Here is some motivation for your Wednesday

05.01.2022 This week we asked Britt, one of our events coordinators and past participants on the GVP India trip, what her favourite part of the trip was and she shared this photo with us and said: "My favourite thing about GVP was sharing the idea of primary care to the adults and children we were working with. Showing that doctors are not just for when you are sick and health care doesnt always have to be a scary experience. That message was probably more lasting than any individual health check we gave." Keep an eye out later in the year to find out more about the 2019 trip!
