21.01.2022 Get to know #UNFCCC Climate Talks Scholar Rose: I’m Rose, a final year Master of Environment student at The University of Melbourne Office for Environmental Programs. I’m fascinated by the interaction between local and global systems, how humans respond to change and the ways this shapes climate change action. My policy paper explores the joint potential of community-led renewable energy projects and a rejuvenated Australian manufacturing sector to transition the economy awa...y from fossil fuels, backed by strong federal government support for renewable energy and ambitious emissions reduction targets. In the face of climate change, reducing greenhouse gas emissions is a crucial step, and right now an Energy Transition is underway around the world. This is an amazing opportunity for Australia to lay the groundwork for a sustainable future, and the momentum is only increasing! Individuals, communities, local and state governments are all working together to install renewable energy systems which remove the need to burn fossil fuels. I’ve always been passionate about community action, and I find the community energy movement really inspiring. Once I graduate, I hope to work in local or state government to scale up these projects and speed up the transition to a circular, low carbon economy.

We finished our Canberra experience with a policy roundtable at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute before bidding our scholar’s farewell. Thank you to all our scholars, and everyone who made this week possible. We can’t wait to return.

07.01.2022 Get to know #UNFCCC Climate Talks Scholar Tiffany: Hi! My name is Tiffany Verga, and I’m studying a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Commerce at Curtin University in journalism and marketing. I’m passionate about sustainability, volunteering and dedicating too much of my time to crime podcasts! My policy paper will explore ways to increase youth engagement within the government to achieve meaningful climate change action. Over the last year as the impact of climate change h...as intensified, despite global youth movements such as ‘Youthstrike4climate’ sparked by climate activist Greta Thunberg, youth voices have failed to be legitimised and heard. While thousands of Australian youths demanded government action, little action followed, and it was quickly overshadowed by coverage of the pandemic. I’m hoping this paper will be able to bridge the divide between government and youth and provide genuine opportunity for young Australians to have their voices heard in the rooms where important climate decisions impacting their future are made. Overall, I’ve already found this experience so beneficial in learning about the youth climate space. I am excited to take my experience and knowledge from being a Global Voices scholar into my journalism career where I hope to specialise in environmental reporting!

05.01.2022 I’m Didem Caia and I am thrilled to be a 2020 RMITGlobal CSW scholar. My passion for community, creativity and communication has granted me an exciting career in the Arts. In 2020 I began a PhD in media and communications and will be researching spoken and embodied modes of personal storytelling as gateways into community and cultural healing. My interests have expanded across creative forms of activism to more targeted writing and speaking, especially communicating about wom...en’s stories. My paper builds on research conducted by the Vic Government’s ‘safe and strong’ strategy and address the possibilities of using dynamic, inter-curricula education for our young men and women as a way to evoke self-actualisation, value systems and empowered/empowering communication. Our government has recognised that there is no ‘one size fits all approach’ and that gendered violence is even more of an issue when it intersects with other inequalities and forms of disadvantage, such as access barriers, class and culture. I hope to bring youth into the conversation, especially youth from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds such as myself, we can build on the strategies that are already in place, and create a wider conversation about the continuing problems of family and domestic violence.

04.01.2022 Get to know Global Voices #CSW National Scholar Sherry-Rose: Hi, I'm Sherry-Rose and I'm currently studying International Relations. My greatest passion relates to the economic, political and social empowerment of women and girls worldwide. My policy paper is about how government can better leverage the growing social enterprise and start up landscape in Australia to facilitate greater economic participation and subsequent positive social outcomes for women of marginalised a...nd underrepresented migrant, refugee and women of colour backgrounds. I think this area is important as there are significant social and economic outcomes that can come out of Australia investing in this space, particularly in a time such as this. I hope to use my experience as a Global Voices Scholar to gain greater understanding of the social enterprise landscape in Australia, policy development, to learn from experts and collaborate with other young people interested in global affairs and creating social impact. My ambition is to work on and lead national and global innovative social impact projects on various topic areas including women’s empowerment and sustainable community development. I want to share my journey in the hope that I may inspire other young people, particularly young women of colour, to pursue their dreams and aspire to reach their full potential.
