25.01.2022 So many of the conditions I help people with have a microbiome influence. Gut health can impact immunity mood skin... pain cardiovascular health children's behaviour and more. There are some simple ways to improve gut health. Eating meals such as the one pictured here is foundational to improving microbial diversity in your gut. Increased diversity usually leads to improved health outcomes. This meal contains multiple phytonutrients, enzymes, bitter compounds, resistant starch, polyphenols and fibre, which are all rocket fuel to the friendly bacteria in your gut and support healthy digestion. . . . . #hillarysnaturopathy #perthnaturopath #perthfitfam #perthmums #digestion #microbiome #healthygut #mood #skinhealth #adhd #childrenshealth #guthealth #holistichealth See more
24.01.2022 Given the current state of the world, I have decided to remove face to face clinic time from my service offerings at this point. You will still be able to book skype appointments with me and get the same level of care that you are used to. As I currently use an online dispensary, access to high quality supplements will remain unchanged and be delivered to your door. In the unlikely event that we decide telehealth is not meeting your needs, we will discuss ways to overcome this. As soon as things return to normal, I will make face to face time available again.

24.01.2022 I have been doing some writing for the media department at Endeavour College of Natural Health where I work as Senior Lecturer. Stay tuned to their page for more tips on hydration as well as the post I wrote on diabetes prevention soon.
23.01.2022 I have a love affair with aloe vera. I have seen it's plant magic work many times. Hubby did some gardening the other day and broke out in a nasty rash from the sap of one of the plants in our garden. I mixed up a herbal salve with calendula, gotu kola, peppermint and chamomile in a base of aloe vera gel. Once applied, he experienced immediate relief and the rash disappeared soon after. Great topically and internally to soothe, relieve inflammation and heal. It's the perfect medicinal plant that just about anyone can grow in their own garden or in a pot.
21.01.2022 Ginger and lemon tea This time old remedy has survived the ages because it helps people feel better when they are unwell. Both lemon and ginger have antiviral and antibacterial properties and are perfect both hot and cold. As the weather changes, we become more likely to feel unwell from viral respiratory diseases. Most of the time, they are mild and harmless and require you to take a break from business, sleep, rest, nourish your body and then feel better. To help supp...ort this process, drink lots of fluids. Here is where ginger and lemon tea can play a role. R E C I P E In a blender, blitz a 5cm knob of ginger rhizome. No blender? Grate it instead. Add a litre of filtered water to a pot and add the ginger. Simmer on a low heat for 15 minutes. Strain when ready. Add the juice of 1 lemon, a pinch of cayenne pepper and some unprocessed honey. Drink throughout the day. See more
21.01.2022 A friend of mine shared this and it resonated with me so much. This is a time of big life lessons. Many of us are running in survival mode. Our kids are watching. What are we teaching them?
20.01.2022 Garlic is such a powerfully medicinal plant. 1 study show that garlic can reverse atherosclerosis when taken for over 2 year duration. It boosts the immune system, thins the blood, kills off pathogenic bacteria and yeast in the gut but also feeds the good bacteria when eaten as a whole food. Garlic is best consumed raw and crushed. Crushing garlic bruises the cell walls and releases the active constituent allicin. Allicin is heat sensitive, so sorry to say, your spag bol wo...nt be a medicinal source of garlic. I recommend that my clients make their own hummus, add crushed garlic to hot dishes such as pasta and stir fries at the end of the cooking process, when off the heat or if they're brave, add crushed garlic to salads. I love a crushed garlic clove on my morning eggs with a sprinkling of oregano. If you have fodmap issues, garlic may cause bloating. This doesn't mean you can't enjoy the medicine that garlic has to offer. Clever supplement companies have made products which contain the allicin only without the fodmap portion! See more
20.01.2022 Hate to break it to you, but you're better off eating your fruit n veg rather than taking it in a capsule. "We did the maths and found that the Juice Plus vegetable capsule contains 3% of one serve of carrot. Not half a serve (50%) of carrot, but a measly 3%. And that was the highest of all ingredients. For example, 0.06 percent of a serve of spinach and 0.02% of a serve of tomato."

20.01.2022 In an effort to support my fellow Perth naturopathic practitioners, I will be closing my books temporarily to all new clients unless they are children requiring help with learning and behaviour. I will continue to see my current clients and support them, but no new adult clients can be accepted. If you require help with your health, please still touch base and I will refer you to one of my excellent colleagues who really need your support right now.
18.01.2022 Summer is certainly on it's way in Perth! Summer in Australia means BBQ's and lots of salads. Salads are an excellent way to increase nutrient density and raw, cooling foods in the diet but people can easily get into a salad rut and eat the same thing over and over.... To make salads a little more sexy, I suggest adding: seeds or chopped nuts olives fruit experiment with different dressings i.e. dijon mustard, garlic and honey versus a vinegarette of apple cider vinegar, olive oil & salt versus tamari, sesame, ginger & garlic versus a watered down guacamole or hummus as a change. soft cheeses or fried Haloumi if you're into that crispy tofu, tempeh or protwin of your choice. How are you pimping your salads? See more
17.01.2022 As with many diseases at the conception of it, the true rates of morbidity and mortaility are usually much lower than originally reported. Remember, conservative numbers don't make good news headlines. Mainstream media are very good at inciting fear and panic through sensationalism. Skeptics have been drawing attention to stats in countries such as Korea for some time, as they have very good testing regimes therefore their stats are likely to reflect true infection rates. K...oreas death rates are much lower than the proposed 3% In my opinion, this is all the more reason to be looking at ways to ensure your immune health is optimal. Get your vitamin D, vitamin A and zinc levels optimal as well as have some Vitamin C on hand to take regularly (this has been part of the treatment regimes in some areas around the world). Also have immune system herbs on hand to take at the first sign of illness. There is research which supports a number of herbs when taken in this manner, and are part of my families medicine cabinent at all times. I am not downplaying the seriousness of these times, rather encouraging all humans to take a more proactive approach to your own health. Times like this highlight that natural medicine practitioners are of utmost importance for our public health system, as we excell at helping with a lifestyle medicine approach. Most people experiencing complications from this virus have comorbidites. See your naturopath, as we can help reduce these risk factors, using an evidence based approach to optimal health. https://www.wsj.com//new-data-suggest-the-coronavirus-isnt
17.01.2022 Easter is a time to indulge (and give ourselves a polyphenol boost!). While we have the best intentions of moderation, for some of us, the Easter indulgence is a slippery slope into cravings and binge eating. Here are some tips to help with the Easter cravings. Chocolate is not a bad food which should be avoided at all cost. This mentality (all or nothing) leads to a binge eating and restrict pattern...which leads to binge eating and yoyo weight cycling, which is incredibly b...ad for us. Studies show yoyo dieting and weight cycling increases death rate more than obesity! Humans are usually not good at all or nothing. We are wired for seeking pleasure. Denying pleasurable things goes against our nature as our brains are wired to seek pleasure out and repeat activities which cause pleasure. It's not bad will power, it's being human. If chocolate is a trigger food and one egg turns into a bag of eggs which leads to a bag of eggs every day kinda situation, then your microbiome and biochemistry may be fueling these cravings - eat loads of veggies to feed the good bugs in your gut and restore balance to the microbiome. Make sure although you may binge on choccie, you also make the choice to eat a big bowl of steamed veg or a salad with dinner for the next week. If the cravings are out of control, you may need a blood sugar supplement or herbal tonic to eliminate the sugar cravings. Not all supplements are created equal, so make sure you chat to your naturopath about the ones they recommend. Eat your choccy eggs with pleasure, slowly, savour them mindfully and gratefully. Sometimes if we engage all our senses, we don't need as much to feel satisfied. Make sure you buy the good stuff. Extra points for dark and organic. Happy Easter! 17.01.2022 Community connection is a determinant of health. How are you staying connected with your communities? I have set up a facebook group for all of the people on our street and a connecting street and hubby delivered notes to everyone's letterbox alerting them to the fact that we now have a page for our immediate neighbours to help support each other during this time of less physical contact with others. I also have a networking page for local Perth natural health practitioner...s, as this is my other important community. I encourage you all to stay connected and find ways of doing this. I am loving all the stories of gratitude and humanity I am seeing on the planet at the moment. Not everyone is hoarding and selfish and divisive. Please speak out when you see us vs. them divisiveness. It's not ok. It fosters panic and dehumanizes people just because they have a virus. It's really horrible to witness. #connection #communityservice #community #perthcommunity #tribe #naturopath #communityminded #stayconnected #coronavirus #highlevelhuman #nextlevelhuman #nextlevel #localmatters #supporteachother #kindness

16.01.2022 This spiky looking beauty is the herb Milk thistle. It has a reputation as a liver tonic and for very good reason. Milk thistle protects the liver cells from the toxic effects of carcinogenic substances, including alcohol. It has also been studied to protect the liver in cases of psychotropic drug overdose. Milk thistle is useful in cases of morning sluggishness, mild bloating, headaches, heavy metal toxicity and for a general spring clean of your body's main organ of detoxification. I also use milk thistle with clients that have the genetic condition haemachromatosis, as milk thistle has been shown in studies to chelate (bind to) excess iron. For this reason, it is very important to separate iron supplementation from any herbal product containing milk thistle.
16.01.2022 Dandelion...wonderful for making wishes and also a powerful plant medicine for digestion and detoxification. The root contains the bitter element which increases digestive enzymes and acids and stimulates the entire digestive tract. It promotes the flow of bile from the liver, which aids in the removal of waste from the body. When using the leaf, it promotes the flow of metabolic waste via the kidneys. This is an inexpensive and easy to consume as a tea. You can boil the... dried root, covered for 15 minutes to make a decoction which can be drunk in the evening to promote a healthy bowel motion in the morning, or infuse the dried leaf as a mildly diuretic tea. If you decide to harvest dandelion yourself, there is a non medicinal weed and the taraxacum officinalis (medicinal version) which look identical, so you may need someone in the know to show you the difference. You also don't want to harvest wild dandelion which has been sprayed with glyphosphate by the shire or council. Best to be safe, and purchase it from your local health food store. The Hilde Hemmes brand is great. See more

14.01.2022 Mindfulness and childhood obesity... Recently I completed a review of the scientific literature on the relationship between parental Mindfulness and childhood obesity. Children with parents who had low levels of Mindfulness with themselves and their parenting had a higher risk of having children with an elevated risk of obesity. This research suggests that children who do not feel engaged with their parents, looked for comfort in highly palatable food. This combination starts... the vicious cycle of emotional eating and biochemical imbalance caused by food addiction. Highly platable foods activate the same reward pathways in the brain as illicit drugs which act on dopamine pathways leading to cravings. Take home message.... Obesity is complex. It starts very early in life (even before that with epigenetic priming....but that's a story for another week!). Emotions are an important part of the puzzle. Now, it's not all the parents fault! A lack of mindful parenting is likely a flow on effect of poor support, high cost of living and the need for both parents to work leading to exhaustion and later retirement age of grandparents due to these same factors....it really is a societal issue which needs a global solution, not just parental training in being more mindful. My tips are: Put your device down on the weekends and engage with your family: play together; go on an outing as a family. Practice self care and stress reduction. You can't pour from an empty cup. Look after yourself so you can care for your family. There are lots of sustainable ways to do this. Start small. Have small rituals like bedtime story time, cuddles on the couch watching a movie or a date with your children one on one once a month. Reduce the availability of junk foods. Have fruit, vegetables, hummus, nuts, homemade low sugar slices/muffins available as an alternative. These foods are less likely to lead to food addiction versus processed versions. Start small, make change achievable. . . . . . . . #mindfulness #parenting #childhoodobesity #perthparents #perthfamily #psychologystudent #psychology #healthyfamily #familytime #mindfulparents #mindfulparenting

13.01.2022 My number 1 recommendation for immune health is Vitamin D. Ensure your bloods show over 80 nmol/L. Anything lower is deficiency or suboptimal. Not all Vitamin D supplements are created equal. Vitamin D is unstable as a raw ingredient and many supplements are poorly bioavailable. Ensure you speak to a practitioner about brand recommendations, as when independently tested, some off the shelf brands (even the ones which say they are practitioner only or are widely recommended ...by medical professionals) had 1/250000th of the amount that the label claimed it had. There is also a dosing regime for quickly boosting your Vitamin D levels which must be done under professional supervision. This is why we study for 4 year to do what we do...to get this type of knowledge. According to this study, it seems like washing your hands and social distancing are not your only options.
13.01.2022 Yoyo dieting (referred to as weight cycling) was studied over 32 years in 5000 people and again over 15 years in 505 men. 2 separate, long term studies have found that weight fluctuations at any weight (didn't matter which BMI category obese or non obese) was associated with higher death rates than stable obese populations. Other studies have found that weight cycling/yoyo dieting has been associated with many other conditions (see below). Stop hating yourself and having a d...ysfunctional relationship with the numbers on a scale. Stop yoyo dieting and starving yourself. You lose muscle, increase inflammation, create a situation of thyroid hormone resistance and ultimately slow your metabolism which becomes very difficult to reverse. Believe me, I have seen so many women in this position. Don't follow ridiculous "detox diets" prescribed by unqualified people. Be particularly wary of anyone selling pyramid scheme multi level marketing products which are ALWAYS overpriced as you are paying for everyone above the person you bought it froms commission. Eat to nourish your body which means you need all the naturally occurring food groups. Deal with any mind body issues leading to binge restrict diet cycling. Become more mindful about food and eating. If you are dieting because of societies expectations to look perfect, then perhaps you need to really ask yourself what is important to you - your health or the number on a scale? Thanks for this great share Kerry from @haeshealth See more

11.01.2022 It is R U OK day. Australians are one of the most anxious countries worldwide. In the last National Health Survey, they found that over 2.4 million (13%) Aussies experience high or very high levels of anxiety. Levels had increased from the previous survey. In the 25-44 year old age group, anxiety is the most commonly experienced health complaint. It also appears strongly across most other age groups, however sadly from age 15-24, suicide takes the highest position. 11.01.2022 Air fresheners are SO TOXIC!!! These artificial fragrances are in your laundry powder, pre wash, fabric softener, dishwashinf liquid, spray and wipe style cleaners, perfumes, moisturisers, shampoo, hair spray, soaps etc etc etc Exposure to air fresheners in mice caused liver injury. The exposure was for 4 hours, 5 days/week, for 28 days. What is this doing to us when we constantly put this stuff on our body? Think about it!!!... Choose pthalate free, natural essential oil scented products. Avoid artificial fragrances like you do cigarettes. It is just as dangerous in my opinion. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8010405/
10.01.2022 The supplement market is very prone to using smoke and mirror techniques to bolster the sales of the latest fad superfood supplement. The products I prescribe clinically are constantly evolving depending on the current research available. For example, I recently went for a deep dive into medicinal mushrooms while preparing an oncology lecture for my final year students. As part of my research, I discovered that many medicinal mushrooms are grown on a medium which contains glu...cans. Glucans can be alpha or beta glucans. Beta glucan is the main active constituent in medicinal mushrooms which supports immunity, which is one of the main reason I would prescribe mushrooms to a client, clinically. The problem is, that many companies count the total glucan in their product, which includes the alpha glucan from the growth medium used, in combination with the beta glucan from the mushrooms and mushroom beta glucan is quite different to alpha glucan. As a result of this research, I then had to verify that all of the mushroom brands I consider for use clinically, test for mushroom specific beta glucan not total glucans available. This is part of what you pay for when seeing a naturopath. It is unlikely that cheap mushroom brands available on the retail market do this testing. See more

09.01.2022 This season I am giving back to the people that have supported my business. If you are concerned about your immune health over the coming change of season or flu season, I currently have a free service for all existing clients (via skype or phone only) to discuss strategies to support a healthy immune system. This appointment is 15 minutes long and specific to supporting immune health only. Offer currently valid until the end of March and as usual results vary between individuals so no guarantees cannot be made around prevention or cure of any disease.
09.01.2022 Mould illness is incredibly prevalent in Australia. Even if your bathrooms look clear, you may be getting exposed via your air conditioning unit. Symptoms of mould illness include: * Sinus congestion * Headaches * Hives ... * Rashes * Poor immunity * Intolerance to chemicals, smells, alcohol, foods * Fluid retention, inflammation and weight gain * Pain syndromes * Chronic fatigue * Mood changes Treatment for mould illness involves removing the source and proper remediation as the most important step. Once this is done, we work to flush the sinuses, safely, control inflammation, detoxify the body and heal the immune system. A mould literate doctor is also important for the severely affected. Curious about whether you're mould affected? Check out the VCS test at survivingmold.com See more

07.01.2022 Figs are in season in Australia at the moment. Why should we eat seasonally? Seasonal eating has a cumulative effect on the environment if many people adopt local and seasonal eating. It reduces your carbon footprint, you support local business and local economy (something all small business owners should be mindful of, afterall keeping the cash flow local means more of it potentially supports your local business!). Eating seasonally is also part of living more naturally and... in tune with the flow of nature. We make more of the enzymes which aids in digestion of certain foods at different times of the year i.e. in winter we make more enzymes for gluten digestion and gluten containing grains are most likely to be winter crops. Eating seasonally ensures that over the year we have better dietary diversity and don't fall into food ruts of eating the same 3 veggies every day of the year which has positive effects on microbiome diversity. A way to challenge yourself to eat more seasonally is to get a seasonal organic veggie box delivery. West Aussies can check out @theorganiccollective for their locally sourced, organic fruit and veg boxes which are home delivered. Other ideas are to grow your own food and be a part of the local food swap pages. There is a fb group called #growfreewesternaustralia that you can join to give away and recieve surpluss from yours and others gardens which helps prevent food waste. See more

05.01.2022 I always give my clients options regarding how deep they want to explore their health and healing. At the first appointment, it is always about working with the main priority. I may recommend some testing to uncover more information to tailor make a treatment solution to address what is revealed in the test. Sometimes clien...ts walk away with all they need from just 1 appointment. 04.01.2022 The International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics recommend the following.... My advice is to not only avoid these substances during pregnancy, but to avoid them all the time. The only way safe alternatives will be found, is when people stop spending money on the toxic stuff.
04.01.2022 According to naturopathic philosophy, wellness is more than the absence of disease, it is a state of optimal body, mind and spirit health. Naturopathic medicine encompasses all of these areas and embraces holism where we see not only your body as an interconnected being with one organ or system affecting the functioning of other organs or systems, but also how we are all connected on this planet and taking responsibility for our health means being in flow with each and ever...yone on the planet all taking responsibility for ourselves and each other. To address the health of your body, I use plant compounds indicated for your physical symptoms. For your mind, I listen and give you time to become mindful of each connection you have with your state of wellness fostering a sense of understanding of the effect of mind on body and vice versa. Mind and spirit health may be addressed with vibrational remedied called flower essences which identify dysfunctional patterns and work at the vibration of that pattern to release it. Everything on the planet is energy, and this is energetic medicine. I also regularly refer to other modalities to support all areas of health and wellness. Sound interesting? Ask me more.... See more
03.01.2022 One of my lectures recently touched on the concept of core values, which had me reflecting on mine and how it relates to what I do as a Naturopath within the social media space. I value authenticity, so you will never see me doing anything that is not authentic or real on social media. No silly videos or dances because that's what everyone is doing on Insta these days (which personally drives me nuts to see different people doing the exact same thing as the others as they th...ink it is what people want to see, will boost their following or looks cool...just be yourself dude...your people will find you!!!). So here, in this space you will see an authentic version of me. I like to be real. I like knowledge. I want to know why as it means I will be more likely to follow the advice if I was in your shoes. I question everything...is it true? I'm a bit of a sceptic at times and like to challenge the narrative as well as the "latest and greatest in the natural medicine world." I'm a bit contradictory. Possibly too open minded...I see both sides of the story, the benefit and the risk, and really love the things that cannot be explained....as I say to my students, just because there is no evidence for something, doesn't mean it doesn't work (hello mind body medicine!). I'm a serious, introvert type. Total realist here but at times have a bit of a quirky sense of humour. So if this is you too...welcome, you're in the right space. We're kindred spirits. . . . . #authentic #authenticity #authenticself #corevalues #values #real #justbereal #knowledge #fakers #naturalmedicine See more

02.01.2022 The Mediterranean Diet is a diet full of plant chemicals which have many benefits to himan health. Here we have a study which shows it can also be of benefit for older people to follow if they are concerned about their respiratory health. This diet would have this effect via multiple antioxidant and vasodilatory mechanisms that plant phytochemicals possess. The Mediterranean diet is a mostly plant based way of eating (I call it a Plant Slant diet). To benefit from these e...ffects, ensure you consume at least 9 (preferably more) serves of plants each day. This includes fruits, vegetables, beans, pulses, coffee, tea and whole grains. Aim to eat 2 serves of each colour fruit/veg every day, to get full benefits of each type of photochemical. If you struggle with this, try including a mixed fruit, veg and plant based protein powder into the diet or include smoothies, salads and soups into the daily meal preparation. Thanks to Deanna Minich, PhD for this great share. For more info on this way of eating, please see her books Whole Detox and/or The Rainbow Diet. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/32202968
