01.01.2022 Our Sarawak legal team led by our Global Managing Partner, George Lo (fourth from left) has secured a historic victory on behalf of former Second Finance Minister Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh. Today, the Federal Court stripped Dr Ting Tiong Choon as the legislative assembly member for the Sarawak constituency of Pujut ending a long and protracted legal saga. The 7-2 majority decision by Malaysias apex court held that the Sarawak State Assembly was correct to disqualify him on the... basis of foreign citizenship. This decision will undoubtedly set a powerful legal precedent that will be read by generations of lawyers to come. The motion to disqualify Dr Ting was tabled by Second Finance Minister Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh in 2017. The House cited Article 17 (1) (g) of the Sarawak Constitution, which states that a person is disqualified from public office if he or she had voluntarily obtained or exercised the right of citizenship in any other country. Dr Tings focal argument was that he had renounced his Australian citizenship, which he gained in 2010, just before the 2016 Sarawak state election.
