01.01.2022 The GLSA committee is deeply angered by the rise of Anti-Asian violence and hate crimes that we have seen both in Australia and abroad. We are thinking of the victims and their families of the March 16 shootings in Georgia, the many elderly Asian-Americans who have been violently attacked, and the countless other incidents that reflect a rise in Anti-Asian hate globally. We note the increase in Anti-Asian racism is very present in Australia, with more than 377 COVID-19 relat...ed racism reports received by The Asian Australian Alliance between April and June last year. Although there has been a dramatic rise in Anti-Asian violence and hate crimes since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, we acknowledge the impact of long-held racist attitudes that are encouraged and perpetrated in popular culture, and the significant role that politics and the media play in normalising stereotypes and prejudice. As a society focused on global issues, we are thinking of all students who are affected by this violence and wish to extend our support to students, both domestic and international, who feel the harmful effects of such hate and discrimination. It is extremely important to the GLSA that all students feel equally welcome and included, whether they are studying in Australia or abroad. We will continue to work to ensure our initiatives and events support all students. We urge all students and staff at the University of Melbourne to show their support and to reflect upon the recent events and ask what they can do to be actively anti-racist. To report an experience of racism, please have a look at the links below: https://humanrights.gov.au/complaints#main-content https://reportingracism.alltogethernow.org.au/ Some educative resources can be found below: https://www.instagram.com/stopaapihate/?hl=en https://time.com/59478/anti-asian-attacks-rising-worldwide/ https://www.theguardian.com//the-guardian-view-on-anti-asi https://theconversation.com/racism-is-behind-anti-asian-ame
