22.01.2022 We all of course like to take control of our health. Some of us are way better at it than others (*well done), but in our quest to have a life, every now and again, we take a risk. And often, the biggest risk, is allowing family or friends to cook for you. Shame. Cause they of course are the ones who we like to hang out with the most (*most of the time). ... My mother, for example, once made a gluten free pasta salad as her contribution to the extended family Christmas buffet. She rang me as always to check the ingredients she used (eg. mayonnaise) were gluten free. Warm cosy thoughts of how much my mum loves me. What I didn’t think I needed to clarify was that she had to use GF pasta. #bigmistake So of course, obliviously confident in my mums intention to always provide me with GF food, I happily loaded my plate with her salad at the Christmas do. About 5 mouthfuls in, after thinking ‘wow’ this tastes just like normal pasta (*heads up...whenever you have this thought...spit it out spit it out as it is never GF!!), I asked my mum casually, ‘so this IS gluten free isn’t it?’ ‘Yes of course dear...*pause...oh wait....oh my goodness, the pasta! I forgot to use GF pasta!’ Yep. Glutened by my own mother. At Christmas. She of course was mortified. The buffet get together went into pandemonium to ‘save the poor glutened coeliac’, and I was once again the centre of attention for all the wrong reasons. 20.01.2022 My apologies that things have been somewhat whisper quiet on my socials of late. It seems as though Covid has been pretty good for my GFHamper biz...happy days . Redeveloping the website has also kept me busy, as well as sourcing and taste testing bunches of pretty gorgeous gluten free treats I am super keen to add to a new hamper line up soon to be released! #toughgig . Taste testing included these pretty as a picture fudge bars from Bramble & Hedge! How good do t...hey look !! . They actually tasted like a cross between a soft caramel and fudge. Interesting So yum though. They are not currently in production sadly due to the Melbourne shut down, but as soon as I can they’ll be added in . 14.01.2022 This is a good reminder...I see a lot of chat about this in various FB groups. Worth noting that while some coeliacs DO react to some topical cosmetics/applications, this will be because of an additional reaction to one or more of the ingredients...and is NOT a Coeliac reaction to gluten. The PERFECT Macaron texture (& I’ve had Laduree from Paris...self appointed macaron expert ) . Just really really good. I freeze them and take them in my handbag in teeny tiny Tupperware as back up when heading out in case I’m not catered for. . 04.01.2022 P R O D U C T R E V I E W I absolutely LOVE these Choc brownie /caramel slices from woollies!! Who else has become addicted?... They are so so yum. Great flavour, texture & they freeze amazingly well. And it comes as a full block...so you can cut it up teeny tiny*, or a bit bigger as a dessert. I’ve had it warmed with my @newfarmconfectionery Choc mint sauce and icecream *Perfect for taking in mini Tupperware whenever an impromptu sweet treat when you’re out & about may be needed...no more missing out The only issue is that it is possibly a little too easy for me to keep them stocked in the fridge/freezer now that I am the queen of online grocery shopping ...with summer deciding to come super earlytoo much winter indulgence means I’m not quite ready with my beach bod * *[Lets be real...I’m never ready with my beach bod ] They also have a chocolate coconut slice which was ok but not as good as the caramel one. 04.01.2022 With so much devastating loss occurring in this Covid season it is so nice when you hear of positive stories breaking through. One glimpse of positivity I heard this morning was the result of a new study (link below) coming out of Italy focussed on the health of children with coeliac disease during Covid. . It found that their health (coeliac symptoms, general well being & social functioning) improved while in lockdown! They theorised that this may be the result of reduced... exposure to stressful events, such as school, coupled with an increased parental closeness, and perhaps greater monitoring of food intake/CC. . I know that when our household was in lockdown, the increased time with my brood & the less hectic schedules of us all was definitely a positive we actually had more than one meal together each week!...(point to note of course...my 2 sons are young adults who don’t need looking after and are normally rarely home...potentially somewhat different to households with littlies!) . It was just a small study, but a rigorous one, so it’s results might be reflective of the broader situation for coeliac children in developed countries .
