23.01.2022 It's hot hot hot in Melbourne! perfect time for an ice lolly. Try these mango and lime lassi ice lollies! So simple to make: blend the flesh of 2 mangos with the zest of 1 lime, 2/3 cup Greek yoghurt and 1 tbsp honey / rice malt syrup. The only problem is you have to wait until they freeze - good job there's some left over to drink in the meantime mmmmm.... #summertime #mangoes #healthyicelollies #healthytreats #melting #howlonguntiltheyreready

22.01.2022 Gut health is all the rage these days and although you’ve probably heard of probiotics, you may not be as familiar with prebiotics. Pre-what now? Probiotics and prebiotics go hand in hand: one is a live, healthy microorganism (probiotics) and the other is the food they eat (prebiotics). Without prebiotics, probiotics can’t survive, so you need both for optimal gut health! Check out our latest blog for more info on how to incorporate prebiotics into your diet to keep your 'go...od' gut bacteria happy and healthy. https://www.goalnutrition.com.au//prebiotics-have-you-fed- #prebiotics #probiotics #guthealth #healthygut #goodbacteria

22.01.2022 "By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail" QOTD (Benjamin Franklin). Food prepping doesn't have to be a chore. When you have some spare time just cook a big batch of something healthy and pop it in the freezer for those times that you're busy, got home late from work or just can't be bothered! Or make a double batch when you're making dinner one night. #healthyeating #foodprepping #beprepared #freshveggies

14.01.2022 Over the last few years we've seen low fat diets being replaced with high fat diets, with carbs being blamed for all our issues. Always be sceptical of the latest diet: Whilst the keto diet can work wonders for some people, studies have shown time and time again that a balanced diet rich in whole foods, including carbohydrates such as fruit and veggies, is the key to long-term health. https://www.sciencealert.com/study-on-half-a-million-people

14.01.2022 If you overindulged over the weekend and are thinking "I'll start fresh on Monday!" maybe it's because your goals are at odds with your lifestyle? Do you really want washboard abs? What are you willing to sacrifice for them? This awesome video by our friends at Precision Nutrition explains the real cost of getting lean. https://www.instagram.com/p/BeWPXdXHVuo/

14.01.2022 After the holiday season a lot of people seem to want to "detox" but what does that mean and does it actually work? Our friends at Examine.com have done some digging and have summed it up quite nicely in this article: https://examine.com/nutrition/detoxes-an-undefined-scam/ Firstly, there is some confusion as to what the substance is that you need to detox from. "A 2009 investigation found that not a single company behind 15 detox supplements could supply any form of evidenc...e for their efficacy (or safety). Worse still, the companies couldn’t even name the toxins targeted by their products or simply agree on a definition for the word detox. The liver, kidneys, lungs, and several other organs work around the clock to remove harmful substances and excrete the waste products of metabolism. They don’t need help from fad diets. So, instead of doing a spring cleanse, focus on healthy habits you can sustain, such as eating nutritious food on a daily basis. Ample protein, leafy greens, and foods chock-full of vitamins are not just tastier and more satisfying than a cleanse, they’re also way better for you." Couldn't have said it better myself! #faddiets #justeatrealfood #detox #healthyhabits #newyearnewyou

13.01.2022 Great little article about the importance of both diet AND exercise when trying to lose weight. There's only so much restricting calories will do before your weight will start to plateau, and conversely there is no point in exercising like mad only to blow it by eating loads afterwards (the old "I've just worked really hard so I deserve this cookie" - such a convincing argument!). http://blog.myfitnesspal.com/diet-exercise-better-weight-/

12.01.2022 To eat organic or not? What does "organic" even mean? Isn't organic food really expensive?? The debate over whether to organic food is better for you has been going on for some time and although studies indicate that there is no significant difference in the nutritional content of organic Vs. non-organic food (with the exception of increased antioxidant content in organic produce), there are other reasons why you might choose to buy organic. Organic foods have been grown or ...farmed without the use of artificial chemicals, hormones, antibodies, genetically modified organisms (GMO), irradiation or sewage sludge. This means that organic crops are grown using natural fertilisers such as manure, which has less of an environmental impact and has been shown to improve soil quality. Organic meat comes from animals that were not given antibiotics or growth hormones. Studies have shown that by eating organic food you are exposed to lower levels of chemicals (pesticides, fertilizers, metals, hormones etc.). This may be especially important if you are pregnant or feeding young children. Eating organic food doesn't have to be expensive and you don't have to eat 100% organic! The Environment Working Group has put together a list of the foods produced with the highest levels of pesticides (the "dirty dozen") and the foods produced with the least (the "Clean 15"). This can be a useful resource when trying to work out where to best spend your money. https://www.ewg.org/foodnews/ Buying organic has definitely gotten a lot cheaper over the past few years and in Melbourne at least there are plenty of companies that deliver seasonal organic fruit and veggie boxes for reasonable prices, which not only means that you're eating organic produce but you're also supporting local farms! Some of them even send out recipes to help give you ideas about what to cook with your box of goodies! #organic #dirty12 #clean15 #localfarms #whatsinyourfood #healthyeating

10.01.2022 Summer is here! Spent a few hours topping up my vitamin D levels and planting some yummy herbs and chili plants. Fresh herbs and veggies from the garden add so much flavour. 07.01.2022 Ahhh Melbourne and your crazy weather! Last Sunday it was 36, today we have torrential rain. Oh well, perfect weather for making soup! Cut up heaps of veggies (I used sweet potato, pumpkin, parsnip, carrots, radishes, celery, onion, garlic, chilli, fresh ginger), throw in some lentils and/or split peas and add some spices (I used tumeric and my all time fav, cumin!). Rather than throw away all the veggie peel and scraps, boil them up in a pan and make your own veggie stock for next time! Freeze in ice cub trays or silicon muffin trays for easy use. #nourishyourbody #nofoodwasted #veggiescraps #banishthatcold #healthyeating
