20.01.2022 Over a quarter million farmers from all over India have gathered on outskirts of Delhi to protest 3 laws recently passed by the Indian Government. These laws were passed in middle of pandemic and by voice. By no means these laws are pro farmers. The protests were ignited by farmers of Punjab, however, now they have nationwide support, and farmers from all over India joining them. Here are the laws: Law#1 - Eliminates the minimum support price (MSP) which the Govt guaranteed ...to farmers for at least a handful grain crops along with subsidies for the farmers. Bigger plan is to eliminate existing govt infrastructure which is in place for farmers to sell at the MSP. Law enables selling direct to consumer, On paper, sounds great, however, This will force the small farmers to sell big shark corporations or loose the harvest. Farmers have no infrastructure to store their harvest, they are forced to sell, as soon as crop is harvested. Existing case studies show that without MSP, farmers are forced to sell at 60/70%. Law#2 - Disputes can't be contested in court. No legal recourse. Let that sink in. Law#3 - There is no penalty in storing essential food products. So Farmers don't have a way to store their crop, are forced to sell at lower costs, then the big sharks can store, create demand and then sell at bigger profit margins. Common man pays more. Farmers had been protesting locally and got 0 attention. Farmers from Punjab decided to take the protest to New Delhi and seeing that other farmers are joining as well. They've been met with Police barricades, tear gas canisters, water cannons, and even dug-up national highways which have been destroyed by the govt., so they can't reach the capital. Protesters have been peaceful and patient. They're serving langar (food) to the cops that are there to stop them. The mainstream Indian media has been shining negative light on the issue and farmers. Primarily, because it stemmed from Punjab, trying to put religious and political twist to the situation. This impacts all Indian Farmers and anyone who eats crops they grow. #SupportFarmers
