25.01.2022 NEW GOC SOCIAL INCLUSION GROUP- The `taken for granted activities that COVID-19 restrictions reminded us of, are the benefits of social gatherings and the importance of strong social networks for support. As restrictions ease, reconnecting with friends, colleagues and family has been a delight for many- but not for everyone in our community. People with a physical or intellectual disability, people suffering depression, anxiety or feelings of loneliness, dont always have... the Social Capital to draw upon in establishing or re-establishing connections post COVID-19. They find it hard to make and sustain friendships and are often excluded from the traditional ways of making friends, leading to further isolation and resulting in a lack of belonging. The barriers that exist for people with disability, depression and social isolation are varied and affect them in different ways. =There are fewer opportunities to make friends when you are not socially included in your community. =Psychological barriers such as; you dont feel like going out, its safer at home, fatigue, negative thoughts etc can all prevent you making the effort to socialize. =Physical barriers e.g transportation issues, logistics, money and mobility also impact. What can YOU do? As a community there are some things we can do to help alleviate these barriers. 1. Join the GOC Community Social Group (register to receive updates on venues and events) 2. Attend consistently (once a month) to experience all the activities on offer 3. Use your existing networks of family and friends to invite others to join the group with the intent of building friendships with those in need 4. Try to be non-judgemental and accept that everybody is different and make the effort to bond with people you wouldnt have considered before. 5. Manage your time so that you can maintain the new friendships, remembering that making new friends take time and effort. 6. See our next Social event at NOSTIMO and book in to attend. For more information contact Dr Eleni Ph 32491000 M- 0423223540 E [email protected]

20.01.2022 COVID-19 -CHALLENGES FOR THE POOR, HUNGRY AND HOMELESS IN BRISBANE Our community has always been quick to donate to causes, disasters, fund raising events and charities (whether they are Greek or not). Its hard to imagine that in such a rich country we have people calling us at GOC, asking for food, warm clothes, toiletries, cash or shelter especially during COVID-19. Yet this is the reality for some people in Brisbane. We have been able to repond to individuals both within a...nd outside our Greek Orthodox Community who are asking for help. It may be to pay a bill, to find accomodation, to request items, food or just to talk. We are doing our best to respond as needs arise. If you would like more information on how you can donate or volunteer at St Pauls Community Kitchen Program (which feeds the homeless) contact our Community Development Worker: Dr Eleni Athinodorou Tel 3249100 Mble 0423223540 [email protected] https://www.mycommunitydirectory.com.au//St_Paul_s_Antioch

01.01.2022 MISS BLISS WHOLEFOODS KITCHEN: WEST END An organic cafe focused on wholesome food. BACKGROUND: Owner Jacqui Toumbas Miss Bliss took over the old Andys Fruit Market in West End 5 years ago. It was where Jacquis grandfather, Andy and their friends met daily for coffee and conversation for 45 years. Understanding the significance of the space to her family and the community, Jacqui approached the new fit-out with great respect, transforming it into a fresh open space filled... with light and brimming with greenery, but hinting at the buildings history by maintaining its original wooden beams and dotting the cafe with images of its previous life. There is even a space looking over the rear courtyard dedicated to hosting the Greek gents, ensuring they still have a place to gather each day. Sadly, Jacqui has had to close her shop front (for now) but is adapting her business by offering a Take-away and delivery service in order to keep her staff employed and manage the overheads of running a small business. Lets support her in this time of crisis. #STAYWELL page.Menu which changes weekly. www.missblisswholefoodskitchen.com.au/missblissmeals Delivery zones are here. http://www.missblisswholefoodskitchen.com.au/delivery-zones
