14.01.2022 Godinymayin Yijard Rivers Arts and Culture Centre is pleased to formally announce the launch of its ‘Ambassador’ program. This initiative will utilise the influence of prominent leaders in the arts and culture industries to ensure even more people are made aware of the fantastic work being done at the Centre. The role will be held by each ambassador for 12 months at a time, with the ambassador using their knowledge of the Centre to promote GYRACC within their industry and to ...their fans. It is anticipated the program will increase audiences at the Centre and incentivise other high-profile artists and performers to bring their work to Katherine. Godinymayin is thrilled to welcome the amazing Shellie Morris as its first Ambassador! This multi-award winning artist has made an incredible impact with both her instantly recognisable voice and her tireless work in the community. Shellie has won many accolades for her artistic prowess, both as a solo performer and teaming up with other Indigenous artists, including the 2014 NAIDOC Artist of the Year, 2013 NIMA Song of the Year, and multiple ARIA nominations. She also performed at the 2014 Festival of the Commonwealth Games and closing ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics, as well as working as the composer for the international award-winning movie ‘Prison Songs’. Despite her prestigious talent behind the microphone, Shellie’s greatest achievements may be off the stage. As a woman who has faced significant adversity in her own life, Shellie has dedicated herself to ensuring she gives other people the opportunity to have their voice heard. For Shellie, this has included working in more than 80 Indigenous communities where she holds workshops and encourages children to speak from the heart, as well as performing an ambassador role for the Fred Hollows Foundation. Her community work has also led to being named the 2014 Northern Territory Australian of the Year, in recognition of her work to use music as a healing tool. Godinymayin thanks Shellie for joining us and we are looking forward to working closely with her over the next 12 months.
