22.01.2022 Thank you to Father Chris Bedding for his timely reminder: Over the past few months many of you have been engaging in ministry in different ways. For some, it has involved digital expressions of church and spirituality. For others, the home has become our focus for devotion and worship. Wherever you are, we hope that you have been able to be still and wonder about the great stories of our faith. As restrictions ease, it is a good time to give attention to how we have been usi...ng Godly Play texts and materials online. Early in the pandemic, The Godly Play Foundation made a statement with requests about using Godly Play materials in a digital context. The Foundation wanted to encourage people to nurture children's spirituality in creative ways during lockdown. They also wanted to discourage Godly Play content staying online into the future. During the Pandemic, the Godly Play Foundation has asked of all those making and sharing videos online using Godly Play scripts: 1. At the beginning of the video recording, please state the name of the story and the publisher in the video and note that the material is under copyright and owned by Godly Play. 2. Limit the audience in some way. For example, if you use YouTube, please designate your video as 'unlisted' and only share the link with a limited audience. If you use Facebook Live, please only share within a private group or church page. 3. Please remove each video after a three-week period. While these requests may seem onerous, it helps to remember that the Godly Play Foundation uses proceeds from the sale of scripts and materials to to expand Godly Play around the world, particularly into developing economies and non-English speaking regions. Did you know that the Foundation has worked very hard to create high quality videos which demonstrate Godly Play stories? There are now 62 stories in a range of languages which can be used as models with leaders, parents (and perhaps children in appropriate circumstances). The Godly Play scripts are copyright, and the Foundation YouTube channel is the authorised method for sharing the scripts online. If you have been creating digital content with Godly Play materials - thank you for your commitment to the spirituality of children! Over the coming weeks, we encourage you to give some attention to the requests of the Godly Play Foundation, to help preserve and develop Godly Play for the future.

17.01.2022 That moment at the threshold -- of being seen and known by name, asked if you are ready -- celebrates the presence of each child and grounds the circle in welcome and love. How have we continued this practice in online spaces, and continued to nurture spiritual community? (From Knowing Godly Play in a New Way FB page)

13.01.2022 How to Help Kids Experience Silence - from Amelia Richardson Dress (Amelia dress.com) Human beings of all ages need silence. It benefits our bodies, spirits and our mental health. In silence we find space to both daydream loosely or to ponder seriously. Both of these tasks change the way our brains function, lowering our cortisol and reducing our sense of stress. Silence has been shown to: Lower blood pressure Reduce muscle tension... Increase focus Decrease heartrate From a faith perspective, times of silence also help us listen for movement of the Spirit, or our internal voice as some traditions call it. When we learn to be in silence, we learn to open our hearts and minds in a different way. Kids, too, appreciate these times. I've heard kids say things like: Something inside me become quiet and peaceful I felt like I was floating, but safe I saw my grandfather, who died last week. He said he loves me. I imagined I was powerful and I saw myself hunting a bird through the wilderness. I feel more confident now. It was just nice not to have noise. I want to stress here that these responses are responses to simple, short times of sitting in quiet. I didn't give a prompt like, "Think about a loved one," or "Imagine yourself outside." I simply created a space for kids to sit quietly and they discovered a richness in themselves. Here's how I set it up: "We're going to sit in quiet for one minute. I'll keep track of time so you don't have to. I promise it will just be one minute. At first, your body will probably feel a little fidgety, and your mind might feel fidgety too. That happens to all of us. You can focus on this candle or on your breathing to help your body and mind settle. Let's take three deep breaths together and then we'll be quiet together. " That's it. There's nothing very fancy about it. (I often use something very similar when beginning a time of silence with adults.) And, this works even when we're connected remotely. I doubted this myself for the first month or two of the pandemic. I was sure that group silence over Zoom wouldn't have the same power. Then, I attended a Friends service one Sunday morning where fifty adults simply sat together, online, for an hour. It was amazing. Even far away from each other physically, even sitting in our separate houses with whatever separate house noises we were each experiencing, the silence stretched to fill the time and space between us. Since then, I've returned to incorporating silence in gatherings with both kids and adults and had the same experience. In fact, I think it may be especially important in this time in order to help restructure our relationship with technology. By learning to experience silence even while online, I suspect that we might learn to better curb our response to the always-on, addictive capacity that's built into our social media, news and email.
