24.01.2022 YAY FOR STEPS IN SUSTAINABLE AIR TRAVEL Before COVID-19, aviation was one of the fastest-growing sources of carbon emissions that contribute to the climate crisis. Last month the world's largest all-electric aircraft to fly so far made its first successful 28-minute flight only using $6 worth of electricity, instead of $300 of kerosene (fuel). . The best benefit of all is that if the electricity is generated using renewable options, electric airplanes will create no carbon... emissions at all! . Whilst there are still improvements to be made, including the weight of the batteries, this is a massive achievement for sustainable air travel . 24.01.2022 DID YOU KNOW We collect used coffee pods & send them off to be recycled by Terracycle... . We have been a registered collection hub for just over a year now. During this time our lovely customers and Sunshine Coast locals helped us collect 15,000 coffee pods. Instead of heading to landfill, these babies will be given a second life as a picnic table, chair, planter box, or park bench). . Reusing plastic and aluminium that already exists saves precious resources and excess... landfill. . We know recycling is not the long-term solution, which is why we have added Reusable Coffee Pods to our product range (head to our previous post to see them). However, we're still happy we can stop valuable resources from sitting in landfills. Thank you to those who have dropped off their coffee capsules to our Moffat Beach warehouse. You rock! . We also collect a heap of other items to be sent off for recycling including disposable razors, contact lenses, cleaning products, bread bag clips, and plastic dental products (even toothpaste tubes). . To make it easier, we've dedicated a page called 'Recycle with us' on our website that lists all of the products we collect for Terracycle and their zero waste alternatives for when you are ready to make the switch, head here https://goforzero.com.au/pages/terracycle . 19.01.2022 FOOD PRODUCTION IS RESPONSIBLE FOR A QUARTER OF GLOBAL CARBON EMISSIONS Climate Store by Felix, is a grocery store in Sweden that prices products based on environmental footprint. The higher the CO2 emissions produced throughout the supply chain, the higher the price! . Whilst grocery shopping it can be hard to know the footprint behind each item you grab off the shelves, however this system educates and encourages consumers to think about it at the point of purchase. Awes...ome, right?! . We only stock Aussie owned brands to lower our carbon footprint (less parcels travel from overseas). We also send all of our parcels using carbon neutral delivery methods. . 16.01.2022 WORLD'S FIRST VEGAN LEATHER MADE FROM CACTUS Mexican company Desserto created the worlds first vegan, sustainable, and organic leather from Nopal cactus, also known as prickly pear. The founders Adrian and Marte realised that environmental pollution was a serious problem after working in the automotive and fashion industries. . Here's why this material is so sustainable: The cactus they use is very resilient and strong, it can handle low and high temperatures There is ...no need for an irrigation system, it grows with rainwater and earth minerals They only cut the mature leaves of the plant without damaging the cactus itself Cactus plantation lasts for a very long period of time, meaning they only have to plant once to last for 8 years The cactus is native and typical to the region and absorbs CO2 during the night The cactus leaves are dried in the sun for 3 days, so there is no additional energy used in the drying process The ranch is completely organic with zero herbicides or pesticides and zero plastic involved! All remaining organic cactus material is exported and sold nationally in the food industry .. Tag your friends! The world needs to know that there are other options out there! I'll have to admit, being prepared is a massive one for me, if I can plan ahead I'm all good but if you spring a lunch on me last minute when I'm not with my emergency pack of reusables, I'm in trouble. . 13.01.2022 HOW DOES COMPOSTING HELP?! A common question we receive is, 'what's the difference between landfill & composting?!' . Composting breaks down food and natural materials so they can be returned to the earth to nourish plants, increase soil health, and reduce methane emissions. . Composting produces Carbon Dioxide (CO2), whilst food sitting in landfill produces Methane gas because it lacks exposure to oxygen. Methane holds 25 x more heat than CO2, which means it does a waaay... better job at heating the planet! YIKES. . This is one of the reasons composting is so important! 13.01.2022 AUSTRALIA'S FIRST SYSTEM TO COLLECT WASTE UNDERGROUND The Sunshine Coast is taking a nation-leading position as the most sustainable and innovative region by unveiling Australia's first system that automatically collects waste underground! . How will it work? Waste and recyclables from buildings and street bins in the new Maroochydore City Centre will move 6.5km through underground pipes by vacuum pressure at up to 70km/h to a collection station. The material will then be ...transferred to disposal or recycling facilities. . How many times have you seen a bin overflowing in the beach park after a busy Sunday?! This project will stop this from happening, increase recycling rates, reduce waste collection costs, and eliminate nasty odours and pests! . The pipe waste collection system will be ready to go late this year. This system is already in place in new urban developments in Stockholm, Seoul, Barcelona, London, Singapore, and more! 09.01.2022 DO YOU KNOW THE DIFFERENCE?! Something is BIODEGRADABLE when living things, like fungi or bacteria, can break it down. They are made from plant based materials (corn or wheat starch) instead of petroleum. This process also requires certain temperatures (50degrees+) & UV ray exposure for it to effectively break down. Unfortunately, most climates don't provide these conditions so they need to be sent to a facility that properly recycles bio plastics. (check with your local co...uncil) . DEGRADABLE items are essentially plastics that become tinier and tinier pieces of microplastic faster. This can be even worse for the environment than standard plastic as it poses threats to marine life & is harder to clean up. To make it break down faster chemicals are added during the production process. Microplastics are ingested by smaller organisms at the bottom of the food chain and slowly work their way up through the natural cycle of life. . Long story short: REUSE, REUSE & REUSE ITEMS! Steer clear of Degradable & if you choose a biodegradable item please take care and do your research based on where you live to find out how to dispose of it properly so it doesn't end up in landfill. In landfill both of these options will break down without oxygen and produce harmful methane gas. . Was this helpful? Tag a friend who would be interested .
