20.01.2022 -My view about the successor of Sensei Chojun Miyagi- I sometimes see that there are arguments regarding who is the true successor of Sensei Chojun Miyagi. I do...nt see the point arguing. The historical record is that Sensei Chojun Miyagi didnt appoint anybody as his successor. So there is no official successor to Sensei Chojun Miyagi. This is the fact. It is up to the individual and to the organization to decide whom we believe to be the successor and whom we follow. We need to separate historical record from the things that we believe. Higaonna Sensei believes Anichi Sensei as the most knowledgeable student of Sensei Chojun Miyagi through his experience. So, we, IOGKF as an organization, claim Anichi Sensei as a successor of Chojun Miyagi Sensei. However, at the same time, other organizations or practitioners believe other masters such as Sensei Eiichi Miyazato, Sensei Meitoku Yagi or Sensei Gogen Yamaguchi as a successor, and I respect them all. You cannot go to people who believe other religions to tell that you are wrong, and you must believe my religion. We must respect each other. The only point we may be able to argue is the historical record. This is a matter that we must settle for our future generations. Regarding Anichi Miyagi Sensei, the historical record is that he trained under Chojun Miyagi Sensei for five and a half years. During that time, he learned all the Kata, Bunkai as well as Hojo Undo from Sensei Chojun Miyagi. Several karate practitioners who knew Anichi Miyagi Sensei, as well as other students of Chojun Sensei, have mentioned that Sensei Anichi Miyagi was the most knowledgeable student of Chojun Miyagi Sensei. 07.01.2022 HOW I SEE TRADITIONAL KARATE IN THE MODERN WORLD An essay by: Sensei Shenae Lambert - IOGKF Australia (AOGKF). 3rd Dan - IOGKF, Black Belt Taekido, Primary scho...ol assistant principal, Lambert Karate Dojo senior instructor. In a modern society that is constantly changing and evolving, there has never been a more fundamental importance for traditional karate and its teachings to be present and accessible to as many people as possible. Unlike a sport that offers many benefits such as increased strength, fitness, flexibility and coordination, karate offers all of this and more. It offers a targeted approach to mental, emotional, spiritual, physical and social health. Karate-do, not just karate, implies that karate and its teachings is a total way of life which goes well beyond just kicking and punching. Our current life in the 21st century is extremely fast paced and full of instant gratification. Technology is heavily relied upon to assist us in achieving as much as possible each day. Everybody is always chasing more and comparing themselves to others as social media blasts comparisons and portrayals of the ideal (yet unrealistic) world in front of us each and every day. Rather than being grateful and being happy with what we have, people are constantly looking for more or to what is next. Okinawa, the birthplace of traditional Goju-ryu Karate, is one place in the world where our modern society that we see here in Australia and many developed nations around the world, is yet to have caught up with the small, southern island of Japan. People live relatively simple lives, appear happier and healthier working in what we might view as more boring or mundane traditional jobs but with the Okinawan attitude and approach, these jobs give a stronger self of purpose compared to those working similar jobs in the west. It is this sense of purpose that builds self-esteem and a strong sense of self, assisting in combating depression and anxiety. With mental health issues now affecting 1 in 5 Australians and 8 teenagers a day committing suicide, surely we need to ask ourselves the question, is constantly chasing more and living lives of instant gratification through technology worth it? The Okinawans would suggest otherwise. What damage is being done by constantly looking for what is next or comparing ourselves to others? Pressures of modern society in Australia has led to families who are time poor and find it difficult to spend quality time with their children as dual income families become the norm. Often, children are left with less guidance and consistency in receiving key messages on morals and values, with schools and extra curricular activities left to fill this void. Sensei’s who are adhering to the principles, morals and values of traditional karate have the potential to be life changing, positive role models to students, teaching the importance of respect, resilience, responsibility and cooperation. Traditional karate increases focus, concentration and discipline as students are pushed to be persistent and diligent in their training in order to achieve their goals. It is important that kids experience failure and see to connection between effort and achievement. Belts are not handed out, instead earned. As our society becomes more politically correct around inclusion and everyone is viewed as being good enough to reach the mark karate reinforces that in order to reach the mark hard work and effort needs to be consistently displayed in order to earn your grade. It will not be handed out for just turning up. The values that are taught and driven in the dojo not only assist children in becoming better citizens in the world but it also helps parents in knowing what messages to push with their children. Parents become an important part of the dojo culture and the messages they are delivering to their children work in harmony with the messages of traditional karate being delivered from the Sensei. Too often I have seen bright, enthusiastic and confident children become lost in their teenage years. They go from knowing who they are and what they want in the world to becoming eaten up by the world’s negativity and darkness. Teenagers long for a sense of belonging and the dojo plays a vital role in providing this in a teens life. The dojo is a place where they can be themselves, interact with positive role models and become positive role models themselves as they reach higher grades and move into teaching roles. Young woman gain a sense of empowerment as they learn how to defend themselves and gain in confidence as they are taught to avoid and handle uncomfortable situations. The dojo is a positive community where everyone feels accepted. I don’t think anyone is lucky enough to go through high school without being bullied and I certainly wasn’t the exception. Even when times have been tough, the dojo has always been my sanctuary. I knew that I could come to the dojo, be myself and be surrounded by my karate family. I question whether the dojo would be full of my karate family if it wasn’t for the ethics of traditional karate. Everyone is supportive and it is about being respectful and competing against yourself rather than others. If the senior students did not embody the ethics and values of traditional karate, I am sure the culture and ethos would be very different. To be able to survive the pressures of modern society, it is becoming increasingly important that people are able to switch off, or disconnect. For adults who experience the full brunt of these pressures, the dojo is their escape. As I walk into the dojo door, my focus shifts. I am in a place where being mindful, present and focused are my outcomes. This is often hard to do when we constantly have things in our daily lives competing for our attention. I am a role model to others as a senior student who models respect and support for others. I am there to become a better version of myself. I am not competing against others; I am just trying to be slightly better than I was the day before. Each training session leaves me walking away from the dojo with a slightly new or changed perspective on an aspect of my life and as a karateka who understands the lifelong journey of karate-do, I try to put this into practice in my daily life. In a world where everything is instant, taking time and persevering to achieve something is slowly disappearing. Tasks that once required grit and stamina to do have become easy and simple thanks to advancements in technology. Children who used to have to be bored while going out for dinner with their families or going for long car trips now have their boredom filled with games on their devices. Video games are designed to constantly hold engagement through their sounds, graphics and storylines. They hold us at exactly the right degree of challenge not too easy or we stop playing but not too hard otherwise we give up. Is it any wonder why we have addiction problems amongst children and teens? How do traditional forms of entertainment compete? How do we escape this world when we constantly have notifications drawing us back to our apps? Unless we find ways to train the mind in activities that require grit and determination, perseverance and hard work, how are we going to develop as a society that isn’t ruled by technology and the associated problems that go along with it? The repetitive nature of traditional Goju-ryu Karate brings the mental toughness of working again and again at something. This mental toughness and fortitude builds skills in people to be less aggressive, more in control and therefore a pacifist in situations involving conflict. There is no first attack in karate and with respecting others being one of the underlying values in karate, we are building a more peaceful and calm society with citizens who are able to mediate in situations of conflict. In conclusion, when people think of traditional karate, they might have thoughts about the crane kick, karate kid, people dressed in white pajamas and a whole lot of hi yas! but in reality what they will find is quite different. They will find what I have found a place to escape, a karate family, a process that develops physical, emotional, social, mental and spiritual health along with a never give up attitude that can be applied to all aspects of their life. They will find teachings that support their development as an individual who is only competing to become a better version of themselves. In a modern world that seems fixated on everyone around them and having everything instantly, traditional karate will offer them a renewed and refreshed sense of happiness, presence and confidence that is developed through a cultural appreciation and awareness of the Japanese culture.

04.01.2022 COVID-19 DOJO CLOSURES A MESSAGE FROM THE AOGKF EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE As you are all very well aware the COVID-19 virus has shut down most of normal life as we know it and that means that we are not allowed to train inside any of our Dojo's effective immediately.... Our Executive Committee wants to assure all AOGKF members that we are working on ways to still be able to train within the legal requirements. We realise that our normal Dojo training is no longer an option. Soon we are going to start using a system that has been around for a while called the 'virtual Dojo'. The virtual Dojo is where the student will log online and be able to progress their individual training using the internet. By completing the classes online, a student will still be able to sit for an assessment and grading, but online. We dont exactly know how long it will take to implement but I can assure you all that we are working as hard as we can to get this system up and running as soon as possible. For information regarding individual Dojo's, please contact your instructor directly. As is probably clear to you all, the NSW, QLD & VIC State Gasshuku's will no longer run over the next two weeks. Further information will be posted as matters progress. We wish you good health and happiness over the coming months. Yours truly AOGKF Executive Committee
